So basically, I graduated college a few years ago, and I was supposed to focus on applying to law school, but I got bogged down in my current job and I got depressed and lazy and I just never ended up doing it. Well another year has passed and this may be my last chance. I'm 26 and quickly approaching the point of no return, so I need to make a change.I have about $60K USD in total savings. I was thinking of taking about $10K USD and relocating somewhere in SEA or Balkans from August to January and just focusing ENTIRELY on my law school application as a day job. This would hit 2 birds with one stone, achieving my dream of long term travel and seeing the world, while also being productive for once and not worrying about my stupid fucking job that's killing my time and motivation. It sounds genius to me, I just have some questions:1. Where to go? I was thinking SEA or Balkans as general regions, but what are best cities as a base?2. Budget. Is 10K doable for 5-6 months? I can go as far as 20K MAYBE but I don't wanna blow all my savings. 3. Visa requirements. As an American, how much can I do without a long term visa? Like can I rent an apartment long term in visa free countries for a few months? What about visa countries like Vietnam? What are the rules here?4. Any risks or ways this could fuck up my life financially or on the job market?5. Other tips. Also general unemployed nomad thread
>>2870178to start, if you can't do it at home you can't do it abroad.Simple as, moving onto a 12hr time difference with tons of "well I'm abroad" distractions will only amplify you from focusing. You can do all you ask via airbnb long term bookings, it's just blowing your saving while you procrastinate.
>>2870181Counterpoint: being unemployed will give me more free time. I'll probably get bored of all the nearby tourist attractions in a week, so long term I think I could focus. Worst case scenario I become a travel vlogger
>>2870183>Counterpoint: being unemployed will give me more free time. I'll probably get bored of all the nearby tourist attractions in a week, so long term I think I could focus.counterpoint: paying for airfare+airbnb's+trying to fit into a timezone you aren't use to+having a ton of distractions+cultural differences+unable to know if the place you booked is good = bumps in the road that's a fact>I'll probably get bored of all the nearby tourist attractions in a week, so long term I think I could focus. So why even waste a week not focusing>Worst case scenario I become a travel vloggerplease be a troll, the world isn't hurting for that literally just look up vlog on yt and sort by uploaded today you won't make shit on money unless you are a 10/10 woman. You just want to move the problem rather than address it
>>2870184>paying for airfare+airbnb'sAlready accounted for budget. Some places are really cheap>trying to fit into a timezone you aren't use toDon't see the issue. I'll get used to it in a week max>having a ton of distractionsEverywhere has distractions. The biggest distraction of all is having a job you don't care about. >cultural differencesAgain, don't see the big deal. Maybe if I was moving there to get married or whatever, but for just a few months of working on my laptop, I think I'll learn everything I need >unable to know if the place you booked is goodIf it's clean and has internet it's good enough >So why even waste a week not focusingI was just entertaining your premise. Yeah, obviously if I travel somewhere different, there will be distractions, but in the long term I'll get used to it.
>>2870186Again if you can't do it at home you can't do it abroad, how do you plan to focus on what you are studying when job time comes around? "ah jeez guys mind if I fly to europe or asia to work I can't focus"lmao
>>2870187Again, if it was my full time job, I probably could focus. Even school while working I could focus. But this application shit is too scattered and stressful
>>2870190>if >when>I just need toDude you're 26 and self-admit you put shit off going abroad will only fuck you harder. If you want to go live somewhere and "focus" go to Kuala Lumpur, a studio with a pool and all that jank is like ~550/mo, food is cheap, you can easily do 6mo. Visa is 2x90 days so you could fly to thailand as a split or Vietnam or Jakarta for cheap ass stays, indonisa is dirt cheap like 300/mo for a condo place.>4. Any risks or ways this could fuck up my life financially or on the job market?yes you are spending a bunch of money you don't need to instead of working a part time job and studying. A wagie cashier job is an insane motivator for you to go into a profession, if you can't figure that out enjoy being 30 and broke and in massive debt blaming society for issues.
>>2870178>>2870184Since he obviously wants and needs a gap period to travel why not just do it? He won't have another opportunity after he dedicates himself to being a wagie fully
>>2870204>He won't have another opportunity after he dedicates himself to being a wagie fullyThis dude had 4ish years to do a gap year, hell he's done that anon and look where he is. He's done that pissed it away and now he's here. He will just piss it away again only this time it's his savings.
>>2870206How was he supposed to do a gap year when he was working retard
>>2870178You won't hack it as a lawyer unless you address the depression and probable ADHD. You can't legally get ADHD meds overseas in SEA so you might go there and find out you're still unable to get it done. But you should probably do it anyway, because there's more to life than working. Have some experiences and get laid.
>>2870207my guy, when I said pissed it away he had 4 years to do this A gap year is fine if he wasn't FOCUSING ON STUDYING...
>>2870212he'll be studying alright, just a different kiss of studying
>>2870212When I graduated I was broke and had no money. The past is the past I can't change it. Better late than never
>>2870228AI is replacing entry level lawyer work anyway. What is your degree in
>>2870234Nothing special, that's why I need law school
>>2870181>unfathomably first post best postListen to the man OP
>>2870236Why do you think you can be a lawyer?
>>2870236>study law for usa>live abroadnot how it works anon wonder what lawyer is going to go "wow you studied in the Balkans? well we study here in america but due to migrants WELCOME ABOARD your time there paid off!"
>>2870186Okay so you do what live abroad for 6-12 months then what? Most apartments don't let you rent unless you have employment or proof of income, or they charge you 2xFor law specifically they are going to want one hell of a story on why you needed to leave the country to focus, when you will be working in said countryWhy can't you just work on this during your off time to show initiative? If you actually have 60k in savings, do the following:Study your ass off till the end of the yearput feelers out for some place you can work as a desk help or receptionist at a law office(lot of places like american territories and US bases hiring)get you BAR exam donethen fucking flask in the cashLaw clearly isn't your passion and if you have to take a gap year to study anyone in a profession sees that as someone just pushing problems around. You can travel if you want but understand when you realize "shit I'm the same person I was back home" you're going to kick yourself in the balls career wise. No one here will deny it's not fun but your OP is obviously not honest to yourself or intentions
>>2870244Cuz anyone can be a lawyer. That's what law schools for. Duh>>2870249Are you stupid? I didn't imply that at all. I want to apply to a school in the us. I just want to spend my time doing the applying part while I'm abroad
>>2870250To be clear, I am not traveling to studyI JUST need to do the APPLICATION
>>2870251Ok this is a LARP
>>2870254Yeah I was thinking the same. Probably that security guard. He should focus on the hallways instead of shit posting on his phone
>>2870253>I JUST need to do the APPLICATIONFor what, you have a job.if this is OP can you restate whatever the fuck it is you want to do. If you just want to take a gap year and do 12-18 month off sure, 20k is more than enough for that. Especially if you SEA or eastern Europe like people said.No one cares if you want to do a gap year just have some story like "well I cam into a bunch of money and took a year off before I settle down". You're OP is vaugeposting so idk.> just focusing ENTIRELY on my law school application as a day jobSorry but this is what lead people to think you need something like to study for the BAR exam or what not. If you skipped over this and didn't think about it, you're a retard. do you have any certificates or is your "law degree" just working as a desk clerk
>>2870257I don't have a law degree, that's why I need to apply to law school. My current job is bullshit and the only way I can hope for a better future is to go to law school
>>2870259>I don't have a law degree, that's why I need to apply to law school. So the first post was correct.
>>2870257Fuck off. Why don't you in2reading comprehension before you call me a retard.
>>2870253>I JUST need to do the APPLICATIONso when you get back home or apply overseas the company is going to go "wow anon who can start after partying in asia is so BASED?!" vs the guy who can start monday?get real you're fat and bald
>>2870265Do you know how to read? A law school is not a company. You apply in Fall/Winter and then start next Fall
>>2870267>A law school is not a company. You apply in Fall/Winter and then start next FallDude are you doing one of those for profit education style schools or some BS. I hope this is a troll because in the OP you said you went to college already. If this is your mindset you failed at life.Sure go to SEA or whatever blow 60k thinking you can be an "influencer" and then wind up poor cool man
>>2870270Ok, sorry if it's not clearIn America, law school is a completely separate school that you can only do after you already graduated undergrad
This guy is going to end up with a 150 LSAT spending $150k for some dogshit law school so he can be a personal injury attorney making $60k. Probably won’t even be able to pass his bar.
>>2870271Anon I worked in higher ed I know you can get a criminal justice degree, yes that's the proper term not "law degree". If you can't apply and do this at home, you have 0 chance abroad. I agree with others, if you want to take a gap year sure go ahead ask that but don't guise it in the fact of "I'll totally study abroad KEK".
I did this. I ended up having a hard time studying, got a 165 LSAT, decided to wait another cycle, went home, actually studied, and got a 173 and admissions to 2 T14s. So just don’t do it.
