It depends on the country, but it's kind of nice feeling like a celebrity just by existing. People are friendly, there's always some guy with too much time on his hands who's willing to be a personal servant and help you with whatever you need at that moment, you can experiment with new foods and new experiences without blowing shitloads of cash and regretting it, and it's all just generally fun.

None of it looks good in pictures. But it feels nice to be in. It's the opposite of a tourist trap.

This. Going to a third world country kind of feels like being a kid again. Everything is strange and new and it takes some figuring out to get anything done. Any tourist can show up to Tokyo or London and end up visiting any place they want even hours away from town and basically get there without a single thought passing through their head. I saw the Sistine Chapel after seeing dozens of other cathedrals throughout Europe. I hate that I saw it after seeing so much of Europe, because all I could think was "huh, it's kind of neat. Looks like other places I saw yesterday." And I walked out after 5 minutes. I'm not saying it to brag. I really wanted to enjoy it more, but I noticed basically everyone was the same. After being marched all around the Vatican museums, seeing a bunch of similar stuff, you simply get burnt out on it and cease to be impressed. It's like trying to maintain a high after you've been addicted for years. If you're looking at similar things, the bar for what impresses you keeps rising forever. The only real solution is to go out and see new things entirely.

And they were right. As I'm approaching middle age, even the most spectacular cities and grand monuments kind of blend together. Europe is nice but it's all a mass of similar things. But being surrounded by men riding carts being pulled by donkeys, seeing piles of shit in the street, finding a good sweets shop tucked away in some alley with desserts full of flavors I'd never even imagined, then seeing some colossal Indian fort that dwarfs the size of any and every castle in Europe, I got the appeal of shitholes pretty fast. They break up the everyday routine.

But even then, I can't do the same thing every day. Indian forts also start to get boring after a while. But you can patrol random indian villages and hear languages you've never heard before, see religious practices that are bizarre and inconceivable, try a meal using some sort of vegetable that looks absolutely alien. It's all new, all the time.

He brought his friends over and they gave me a cup of hot chai while we all chatted about everything. They refused to take any payment, but I made sure to give them all little wads of cash so they could get a nice dinner for the night.

That wouldn't happen in a slum in my home country. I wouldn't dare risk it. And I didn't even imagine it would've happened that morning when I walked out from my hotel. I just ended up at a slum, met people with backgrounds beyond anything I ever knew before, and made some good memories. While all those cathedrals in Europe blend together and I couldn't tell you which is which if I look back at my photos.

I've been to both Switzerland and India and enjoyed them both equally. Switzerland has better and cleaner nature that's easily accessible, but the food is bland and good god are the people absolutely frigid assholes. India has food that doesn't bore me and people are jolly and friendly. And personally, I find Indian towns more exciting than Swiss ones. Completely different from Italy where I had to present a QR code and rectal scan for any slightly popular historical place, then wait an hour until it was my turn to get in.

I guess if you go to the most popular shit in Europe it will be busy especially in summer but there's lot more to see beyond that. There's always something happening and its great for a night out. Can take a train out and do hiking because the nature is well taken care of and there isn't heaps of shit everywhere. People understand hiking whereas 3rd worlders really struggle with the concept.

When I was in Thailand, I noticed that outside of certain parts of Bangkok, it's quite run down and backwards. I also noticed that outside of the very core parts of Bangkok, I pretty much never saw foreigners at all. Especially not white foreigners. In Ayutthaya, I saw no other white people during my whole time there. Just some Chinese grandmas who wanted pictures with me. Even in Bangkok, I almost never saw whites at museums or major temples, but I saw shitloads of them flowing out into the streets whenever I passed a bar.

I think Vietnam takes this to a higher extreme. Get outside the downtown cores and you simply will not see white people. I went into rural Vietnam for some work trips and was impressed with it. People were living in homes that were 3 concrete slabs for walls, a concrete slab for a ceiling, with a dirt floor and a curtain for a door. That was my first experience with a shithole country and kind of blew my mind. There were hot women living in this town, dressed up nicely, working at the local factories, walking around with smartphones, living what would generally be considered modern lives. But at home, they lived with a dirt floor and in a windowless concrete box that didn't even have a door.

I've noticed this too. Single male travelers are lazy as shit and rarely go to places where they feel like they don't have a chance of getting laid. They increasingly travel overseas for comfort and leisure; they are picky and querulous and easily annoyed. Some of them LARP as Mr. John Conquest online, but IRL with their alcoholic hangdog faces wilting under the fierce sun on the rare occasions they venture outside in midday, they sure don't look like they're "living like a king".

Women are more willing to wander around the map just to see places. The hagpackers with their sun-spotted skin are the most geographically adventurous, but they don't go where they feel unsafe or out of their depth, which is most of the world.
