I am solo travelling to New York City for the next 2 weeks. Its my first time to the US as a EuropeanWhat should i do there? i dont wanna do any touristy stuff and I wanna live like a local, like a casey neistat vlog.what are some cafes or stuff i could do explorei planned this trip 6 months ago and did no prep whatsoever till now
>>2870973>What should i do there? i dont wanna do any touristy stuff and I wanna live like a local, like a casey neistat vlogLiterally just stick to Brooklyn, Chelsea and Greenwich then and just ask people where good shit is cause they'll give you a better recommendation 70% of the time than Google or some shitty blog will.
>>2870980what about east village? do i just ask random people on the street?
You’re likely too poor to live like a local. If you don’t want to do tourist activities, why would you go to New York?
>>2870999>You’re likely too poor to live like a local. the city that elected a literal communist btw> If you don’t want to do tourist activities, why would you go to New York?i really love the city that doesnt mean i wanna hang out with the fucking chinese tourists. and its my first time in america, next time i will probably go somewhere different
>>2870989I stayed in an AirBnB in the East Village several years ago (IDK if theyre still allowed or not.). Stayed in a small walk-up apartment with a friend. The owner apparently checked in on us while we were out and moved stuff around. It was an odd feeling. Don't leave anything valuable behind I guess.I found it easy to get around via subway. Manhattan vs. Brookyln is kind of like the North and South side of the Seine River. They don't mix that much it seems.
2 weeks? Just dick around NYC tourist places maybe take a train to Boston or Philly and see some shit there Amtrak is dirt cheap. You might be able to squeeze in a DC trip if you plan right.
>>2871005I second this. 2 weeks in NYC sounds like extreme overkill. Even a weekend there is usually more than enough for me during the times I've went.
>>2870973NYC is bigger than most tourists think it is. You could spend a whole day in Central Park or Prospect Park (not that I'd recommend it right now, the weather kinda sucks at the moment).
>>2871012>>2871012its funny, 6 months ago when i was organising this trip i thought 2 weeks was too littlekeep in mind transatlantic flights isnt the easiest thing in the world, too long and comparatively expensive as opposed to flying in asia via the UAE for examplei think ill go to Boston, Philladelphia and DC dont seem very interesting to me
>I want to live like a localWow congrats just walk around there you go, NYC's identity is fleeting lmao. You have 2 weeks which is enough time to basically do every tourist thing around NYC and then some. Again, a day trip to Boston and Philly for some signature meals or sights would be easy.10 days well planned out in NYC is probably enough time for the good iconic and memorable things. People saying "I can do it all in a weekend" either don't understand time limitations or are just boring people.
>>2871015>Philladelphia and DCThey're nice day trips. If you're smart you squeeze in some natural beauty through the Poconos, Catskills, and Hudson River Gorge.
>>2871018>Poconos, Catskills, and Hudson River Gorgedude i would love to do some hiking actually, how accessible are these places, assuming i dont rent a car (i am not sure my driving loicense is valid in the us?)>>2871017>Wow congrats just walk around there you go, NYC's identity is fleeting lmao. as an eastern european i am sure i am gonna be surprised still>People saying "I can do it all in a weekend" either don't understand time limitations or are just boring people.yup, dude at that point just go in, take your pictures for your social media and leave, lol
>>2871020Look up amtrak a fair bit of places are easy to get to like Albany and other stops along the way. It's still a dicey call due to snow in higher elevation areas so probably still to early.
>>2871020>dude i would love to do some hiking actually, how accessible are these places, assuming i dont rent a car (i am not sure my driving loicense is valid in the us?)The NYC region is probably the only part of the U.S. where there’s great day hikes accessible by rail. The local commuter lines like Metro North, Long Island Railroad and New Jersey Transit will get you great spots in an hour or two, even intersecting the Appalachian Trail. At Poughkeepsie there’s the Walkway Over the Hudson, an old railroad bridge with spectacular views of the river and trails on either side. Cold Spring has trails along the river and up a mountain. Harriman State Park is accessible via NJ transit out of Hoboken. Do some research and you’ll find more destinations. There’s no trains to the Catskills but plenty of buses out of the Port Authority terminal. Hiking is the last thing most people think of with NYC but it’s a crazy feeling to get on a train in the city, ride through cool urban grunge that opens up into some of the best scenery in the northeast, then just step onto the platform and start hiking.
You’ll probably find yourself in lower Manhattan at some point. The Statue of Liberty boats are a nightmare but you can get almost the same experience on the Staten Island ferry, a tourist cliche but it’s free and any excuse to get out in the water is worth it. The Museum of the American Indian near Battery Park is free and inside a spectacular old customs house. Walk along the river esplanade in Battery Park City where there’s lots of pocket parks and artworks. It’s one of the few waterfronts in Manhattan that isn’t next to a highway. Wall Street is worth a walk and Trinity Church has a colonial era graveyard where Alexander Hamilton is buried.
Set it on fireNo really. But before that all there is worth doing is moma and eating slice pizza. Maybe a sandwich.
>>2871012I could kill two days just in the museum of natural history. >>2870973time out new york has a lot of good ideasif you're a weeb, kinokuniya's a nice place to go
>live like a localYou mean live like a wage slave who has to cram themself into a metal tube potentially full of psychopaths everyday? And walk through the fucking shit snow on their way to their shitty wage slave job? Or the sweltering heat in the summer? Because what a true local is. A wageslave who eats shit and works a bullshit job to make NYC look nice for tourists, billionaires, or nepo babies. If you are an NYC local, you are an epic faggot and cuck all in one. Now, I know you're not a local OP, you're just visiting. So my advice is to get in, and get the fuck out as quickly as possible. My favorite place in all of NYC is the ramble in central park because it's the place that feels the least like you're in the city. The MET is ok too, it's just a bunch of loot, but it's more condensed than the louvre so that's a plus. Top of the rock is ok but the view is probably worse than when I did it, since they've added the new jpmorgan building. tldr NYC sucks and I wouldn't recommend spending more than a couple of days there. The cool shit in america is out west.
>>2871707>the ramble in Central ParkEven non-gays know this is a notorious cruising area
>>2871710I said get in and get out as quickly as possible, did I not?
>>2871015This is because most people that visit the city just think of NYC as Manhattan. 2 months isn't enough to see everything NYC has to offer.
i'm not reading any of this thread but i'll tell you this muchnew york isn't that special. you'll walk around, and see a million people and talk to NONE of them. you'll spend a lot of money on bullshit. even a water or a coke or someshit will cost like 3 or 4 times as much as you're used to. hopefully you don't smoke cigarettes because those are upwards of 20 dollars depending on where you fall into the trap. it's a stupid experience and nobody should live there unless you make a half a million a year or have some reason to be there (famous, podcast, music, etc)
