I need a holiday but I'm too burned out to make decisions or plan much.

What's the best way to take a trip? Should I just pay for a guided trip and risk being stuck with some annoying people?

Where are you leaving from? Where do you want to go? What do you want to do?

For basically everyone on /trv/, a guided trip is pure hell. If you're going for an international trip with a tour, you're going to be marched along like it's an elementary school field trip. You'll spend 20 minutes in some genuinely nice area then be corralled into a mandatory visit to some shitty gift shop for 2 hours. Your only meals will be shitty chain restaurants that you can also find at home.

To some people, this legitimately sounds great because they don't need to think and they're never out of their comfort zone. To many others, this sounds like the opposite of fun.

If you want to try completely new food, have interactions with individuals that you never imagined talking to, and experiencing completely unexpected things, then find a place that's kind of interesting to you, book some hotels in a few different towns, set a day or two aside just to see nature, and see what happens. If you're a picky eater who just wants to eat pizza and french fries, you don't want to interact with anyone who isn't an English speaker, and you want a T-shirt with the name of your travel destination, then go for a guided tour.

Leaving from Australia and most likely will go to Asia given the current travel situation.

Tempted to just book a return flight to Hanoi, book a week of accomodation there, and not overthink it.

Stop trying to be a poorfag on vacation (even though as Europoor it is basically inevitable, you guys make less money than a dishwasher in California). Hire a car and driver who speaks good English and is knowledgeable about the area. Let him take you to the places he thinks you want to see.

Hanoi is a great place for a solo trip and having no real plan. I visited and spent my time just wandering around and eating anything that looked good and being very satisfied with it. The Ho Chi Minh museum is cool, the temples are interesting, and it's easy to get a day or two away to Ha Long bay or other places in nature.

Is the pollution as bad as people say?

Kind of puts me off.

If you're already tired and want a comfy relaxing trip this is a really bad place to got, very noisy, crowded and polluted. If you really want Vietnam go in Da Nang and get an hotel near the beach.
Picking one city and just doing chill stuff is the best idea, other options would be Seoul, Fukuoka, Seattle, Shanghai etc.

Beach getaways are the more common choice for a wagecuck seeking to unwind in an upscale setting. Foreign cities aren't relaxing unless you spend all day cooped up in your hotel room watching TV...which you can do just as well at home. There's simply too much unfamiliar stimulation every time you hit the streets. Even walking around a city in Vietnam would be very stressful for somebody who has never walked in Third World countries before.

Air pollution varies from month to month. This time of year it is generally high in Hanoi. Truth is, if you come from a clean place in the First World to the Third World, you will immediately notice that the whole urban atmosphere is full of exhaust fumes from innumerable vehicles without catalytic converters. With enough time you get used to it and then stop smelling it altogether.

It's not as clean as Australia, but as another anon said, you don't notice it as much as you expect after like a day.

The only time I was ever aware of pollution in another country was when I was in Beijing 10 years ago. Couldn't see 50 feet in front of me and my lungs burned. Though it's completely changed and it's fine now. Nothing else on earth compares to that, and I think any desirable travel location (including Hanoi) is fine enough.

And since I know you're thinking it and afraid to ask: yes, the women are attractive. We all forget about the downsides of third world countries when convenience store clerks are cute and chat with us.
