I’m turning 30 next Saturday and live in Boston, but I’ve been trying to get out of here. I’m seriously thinking about doing a cross-country road trip to the West Coast and visiting a bunch of national parks. My rough plan is to drive down the East Coast to Florida, then head to Texas, Arizona, Utah, and through California.

Do you have any route recommendations for that?

A 30th birthday cross-country road trip from Boston to California is an epic way to hit reset. To maximize national parks, take a Southern route (~3,500+ miles): Boston
Blue Ridge Parkway
Florida
New Orleans
Texas (Big Bend)
AZ (Grand Canyon)
Utah (Zion)
CA. Drive through national forests, stay in budget motels, and skip major interstates.
Recommended Southern Route Breakdown:
East Coast Down (Days 1-5): Take I-95 or explore US-1 down the coast, visiting coastal towns and perhaps Savannah or St. Augustine, FL, to start.
Gulf Coast & Texas (Days 6-10): Head west through New Orleans to Texas. Take I-10 West to visit Big Bend National Park (Texas), which offers stunning desert landscapes and is a great stargazing spot.
Arizona/Utah Parks (Days 11-17): Drive toward Grand Canyon National Park (AZ). From there, enter Utah to explore the "Mighty 5" (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands). Zion National Park is a must-see.
California Arrival (Days 18-21): Enter California. Depending on the time of year, traverse through Death Valley National Park or head up the coast towards Yosemite (if mountain passes are open).

Tips for Your Trip:
Vehicle & Camping: Use an SUV for comfort and better fuel efficiency, say Reddit users. Look for Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land or National Forests for free dispersed camping options to save money.
Budgeting: Lodging and fuel will be major expenses. Plan to use budget motels in smaller towns instead of staying directly at national parks, recommend Reddit users.
Safety: Stay updated on road closures, especially if driving through Arizona/Utah in late spring, as some mountain roads may still be snowy, note Reddit users.

Happy early 30th birthday and enjoy the journey!
