I’ve read multiple stories of white foreigners experiencing xenophobia from locals staying in Japan, saying stuff like "b-but I respected the local customs!"It’s as if a significant portion of the country is hostile towards foreign tourists.In contrast, although it was a short trip, I felt nothing but kind service and no hostile attitude towards me. Well…the immigration lady in Kansai looked like she had a short temper, and then there was this cunt who sat on my seat on the Skyliner going to Narita, insisting it was hers, and being a bit nasty towards my wife who sat next to her. It prompted me to ask the conductor about it, showing the ticketc but I wasn’t crazy and he told her it was my seat, which forced her to give it up and go arguing with the conductor instead. Didn’t apologize which I’m okay with, but thought it was customary to do in Japan.Otherwise everyone I interacted with were either respectful or genuinely kind. My favorite instance was when we were leaving Shinjuku Goyen Garden because it was closing, an elderly guard was waving at everyone with a huge grin on his face saying "bye byeeeeee! arigato gozaimasu!! byyeeee sank yuuu"It was so adorable.All I did was being respectful, giving way to Japanese in metros etc. and using a little bit of Japanese. In addition I hand over money with both hands which I think matters a bit and is a concept kinda foreign to westerners.
