I always just wore headphones for the whole travel day and sometimes its tedious.Whether its blocking out the ambient noise, or there is a cranky baby, or 3rd worlder talking on their phone, or some drunk chavs and chavettes It made last journey so much more comfy.Foam plugs are ok. The christmastree ones ive had one good pair one seemingly useless pairNewly tried wax plugs, feel gross in your hand, but worked extremely well. could still hear when attendant has to talk to you, but can ignore everything else

No. Hearing is an essential part of my situational awareness while in public. Otherwise you'll be like one of those normalfaggots who gets attacked and freezes up, caught completely off guard because you weren't paying attention. BTW this only happened once to me, and it was when I was wearing earphones and ignored this sketchy ass dude who walked up to me saying something. He then slapped me across the face with the T-shirt he held in his hand.If I need earplugs to sleep, that means something is wrong with the living situation. Yeah, sometimes you have to make do with the shitty budget hotel you ended up at, but my travel goal is always to sleep in a room so quiet that earplugs are pointless.

i think of all the times ive gotten a hotel room and its the 2nd floor and its some town where dozens of people ride dirtbikes thru town (palma de mallorca). or u rent a travelodge in london - just outside your window there is overnight construction on the underground and the maintenance door is buzzing outisde the window all night. Or a random hotel in madrid, during the day time they were doing renovations on the same floor in a neighboring room.

Situational awareness is primarily an issue of dealing with traffic in Asian countries, not of robbers or other lowlifes. I can judge the size of a vehicle by the noise it makes coming up behind me, and react accordingly. Wearing headphones in public is peak NPC behavior. Such people are always zoned out and completely oblivious to those around them. Whereas in America especially I'm never relaxed in a diverse environment. Anything can happen at any moment, and I must be ready to respond in a split second.
