I’ve been in Hua Hin for the last week. It’s not as exciting a city as bangkok but I like that it’s chilled out and doesn’t have a big party scene. Most of the falangs one sees here seem to be longer term residents of thailand and not casual tourists. Driving down to Chumphon today and will spend a few nights there at a hotel on the beach.

hey chuds! i just recently did a 2 day layover in BKK. I first had a 7 hour layover in BKK, so I decided to go wonder about the asok / Sukhumvit area. i really missed the humidity, smell, noise and dodgy characters on every corner, so I decided i'd do a night or two on the way back.

I stayed at the jw marriot, who let me check in at 10am. god, i love not being poor. had a sleep, woke up late afternoon and was craving a khao soi (picrel). went back to my hotel room, had a shit and just bar hopped around Nana, Soi Cowboy and soi11 area. I didn't do any coming this time. I wasn't in the mood, and I would have had to bring back a real high-class bitch to the JW and I don't know where to find them, not some flabby bellied slam pig from Isan with a c-section mark.

i didnt do much else. i asked gemini where i can get some good phik khing crispy pork, also had a few cocnut waters and mango sticky rice.

oh i also went into a weed shop. i would have bought some if i could smoke in my room, but i couldnt. instead i bought some sick grinder and pipe that I brought back with me. they were pretty cheap, and next time I go I will probably bring back one of those crazy looking bongs.

I flew BKK to IST and back. This was my first time flying business class on thai airways. the new business class fit out on their a350s are 10/10. great layout and comfy seat/bed. and the food was great too! the older business class fit out on their a350s is pretty shit. seat is tight, uneven elbow space, the bed has bumps in weird places. the amenity kit and pyjamas they give you are pretty cool, some collab with mega coomer jim thompson (silk guy). so if you ever fly thai business class, make sure its the new fitout on the a350.

Took me 3.5 hours to get to chumphon from Hua Hin. Very enjoyable drive including the last 90 minutes or so on a recently resurfaced scenic route with lots of fun turns and zero traffic. Found a cafe with a pair of water buffalo on the beach

I went from NYC to Delhi and really loved it. There were barely any foreigners there, especially in the hood. It's really gritty and grimey though, probably not what you're looking for at all but if you can stomach it it's amazing.

After that I went to China for 3 months. The price to performance is best in the world afaik and it's really safe. Only thing that sucks is it's hard to have deep conversations with the locals there. The system is less obtrusive than you think but it's always looming. A good country if you want a posh life with few other foreigners, an adventure but easy enough to convince your wife. They have a beach island in the south that's worth checking out (not Taiwan)

Malaysia sucks for single people. You will be paying upwards of $8 for a beer and the only bars they have are just the same beer belly boomers you see in Thailand. Prostitution is easily accessible if you're into that, I'm not, but prostitutes have offered themselves to me for less than the cost of two beers at the bar. Weather is tropical, it's really safe and developed. Some people choose it if they want a developed city but disagree on China ideologically.

Next step for me is Kaohsiung in Taiwan. A beach city in the southern part of the island. I'm drawn to it for the cheap price but foreigners say it's good.

Jeju and Okinawa are good options too. Easy sell to the wife, less good for cooming with ladyboy bar hoes tho

China is mostly unexplored territory for me, but I've done some Google Earth exploration and was always shocked how with all that coastline it looks like there is 0 towns or cities set up with any leisure time activity along it. Zero marinas, beach resorts, etc. We're long distance sailors and had fucked with the idea of trying to explore China but it would be hard to find a marina that isn't just a straight up fishing port.

Tbh I've never paid for sex directly other than buying drinks which I do anyway. But I figure a couple might be a tall order. I imagine half the girls who went for me did so because they thought they might land a rich (looking) American so I might have to pay to get my first double BJ with my wife involved. Phuket is alright, but it depends on the area. Bangtao has nice hotels and a decent downtown, but lots of traffic (balanced by being near the airport). Rawai can be charming but is a little less fancy than bangtao and is a long drive from the airport. Somebody stole my weed from its outdoor hiding place last night. They must've watched me stow the smoking kit behind the rotten pallet on the far edge of the hotel parking lot after smoking a bowl around 9 PM. Thankfully I had held off on purchasing more, so there was less than $1 USD worth of weed inside.

With the start of work in America as little as four weeks away, I'm taking this as a sign to quit smoking. Cheap Thai weed hits like poison when you first try it after a long period of abstinence, but the intense stimulation of your cannabinoid receptors quickly becomes addictive. It's strong enough that you only have to smoke four times to be high all day long. It also mutes out emotional expression and makes me not give a fuck about anybody, which worsens the quality of interactions with the locals. Falling asleep while high feels so blissfully restful, but THC inhibits REM sleep, which over time means that you feel less energized and more disconnected from your surrounding reality. The solution, of course, is to smoke weed shortly after waking up. Then everything feels good again in that weird spacey THC way.

This is the room I'm staying in for less than $12 USD. Here they even give you a fresh towel every day and also offer to clean the room. There are eateries galore in Trat, and they are all serving traditional Thai food at local prices; good riddance to those gimmicky hipster restaurants with A/C dining rooms and outrageous prices. Snooty attitudes have also disappeared; people are very welcoming and helpful, happy that some foreigners made it all the way out here.

Public buses only run along the principal highway, which is still called Sukhumvit Road out here. There is supposed to be songthaew service to outlying districts like Bo Rai and Laem Ngop, but a complete dearth of passengers means that the songthaew drivers insist on getting paid full taxi fare, which in their calculations is somewhere around 20 baht per km. A 50 km ride will therefore cost $30 USD.

My next destination will therefore be Khlong Yai. It's not far from the shuttered Cambodian border crossing, located on a very long, narrow strip of land that stands between Cambodia and the coast. I bet it gets a little creepy down there, with no traffic on the highway and soldiers facing off in the jungle barely half a kilometer from the edge of the town. But if such a place is where my presence as a foreign visitor will be appreciated most, then that is where I will go. Would be epic if some firefight pops off and we all have to be evacuated as artillery shells scream by overhead, but for the sake of the population's wellbeing I hope for continued peace.

Trat is really small compared to other provincial centers in Thailand. Yet it's remarkable just how much effort and expense the Thai government has put into public infrastructure even in such an insignificant corner of the country. I've yet to see any potholes on the roads here; so much pavement has been newly laid, and vehicles fly 100+ km/h down the highway without a care. Women pull weeds from the drainage ditches by hand to ensure that the streets don't flood in a downpour. Weedeating crews mow down the tall grass on medians and verges. Any litter and rubbish bags get picked up on a daily basis. So many roads have sidewalks. Now it's clear why travelers say that Thailand is "Westernized". Not because everybody speaks English, but because some of the exacting quality standards of American-style construction are applied to projects here, as is American-style intensive maintenance. Coming from India, the difference in quality is like night and day.

Hillside Buddha is so close to the border with Cambodia. The dogs didn't like me visiting, but they were just barking and circling uneasily, which means they were fearful.

Its eyes were all lit up with malicious glee, which I thought was a little odd, but I didn't take any safeguard. There is no beach here, only a vast mudflat at low tide. Lots of blown-out structures built on pillars over the mud. Everyone is super friendly here, not at all what you expect from visiting Thailand in 2026. It's remarkable how little trash there was thrown in the mud around the houses. If it was in India, there would be piles and piles of rubbish everywhere. Main downside to staying here is the lack of restaurants. There are a couple still open, but they are scattered across the village. Many restaurants listed on Google Maps have shuttered.

Tomorrow I want to continue the last 20 km to the farthest endpoint of Trat province. There's a resort down there, but it's probably going to be even harder to find food because the border has been closed for eleven months now.

Koh Phangan has changed a lot over the last decade or so that I’ve been visiting there. It used to be the chill hippy island and now it’s turning into Bali 2.0.
