Alright guys, I think I've finally cracked the code and have found the perfect itinerary for a European theme park trip next year. We're going to fly in and stay for three days at Efteling (first day barely counts because we'll be so tired) then we'll do a half-day at Walibi Holland and then drive to Phantasialand. We'll stay for two days there, and then drive to Plopsaland Germany for another half-day, then drive to Europa Park and do two full days there. I think it works out really perfectly. We have two days at the major parks, while squeezing in shorter days at smaller parks on the days where we're traveling. If you do it this way, you're actually never driving over two and a half hours at a time. I don't think the pacing can be much better than this.

Yeah, that's the one thing I'd feel like I'm missing out on with my current plan. Ride to Happiness looks amazing. I just don't know how the family would feel about adding time for it just to get on one ride. It looks pretty bad outside of good landscaping right now and the Gotham area which they redid recently. They’re generally considered to have the worst ops in the industry right now. One thing I noticed when I was there last week is that the rides just shut down during the 5:00 shift change. I walked onto Superman (with my fast lane) which had an hour long wait, but I sat in the seat for 10 minutes while about 12 ops organized themselves. Meanwhile everyone in line baked in the sun on a 95 degree day. Never seen anything like that elsewhere.

Another problem is getting through and around Atlanta, I'm sure you know how that can be. I live about the same trip time from Fun Spot. I've never been and I'm debating on whether or not I should brave going through Atlanta to ride AF1 before it closes. I'm honestly not sure if it's worth my while, I hate going through there. How much do they charge for an all day pass? Their ticketing site is offline, looks like AF1 is $12 per ride.

I don't have any interest in going back to SFOG, there's not much that's new there from the last time I visited the place in 2012. The Gold Rusher "coaster" looks lame and Twisted Cyclone just looks gimped. It's unreal that the last good coaster they got was 20 years ago with Goliath, and even then it's not that good. About the only thing I'd be really interested in finding out is how Mindbender is since Premier did all that work to it but again, just not enough to get me over there considering how bad their rep is now (and it was bad then, too).

I don't have to get through at Atlanta. I'm a Bamafag. You can ride AF1 as many times as you like for $35 I think. Gold Rusher is awesome though and Twisted Cyclone is adequate. Mindbender is meh but in my opinion it was always meh. The best part of it is having almost no restraints despite inverting twice.

Imo it's because a lot of original/first generation water rides are aging out. Tons of log flumes, shoot the chutes, river rapids, and splashdowns were built in the 70s-90s and they're getting old, but people like water rides so the market is there for the companies that build them.

Tbh I don't like most of the modern offerings. In particular that one by Mack I believe that's a "boat" which rolls on a track underwater and can rock and twirl. Maybe we just haven't seen what the ride system can do, but POVs of the one I have seen looks lackluster (it's somewhere in Europe). Enclosing it would be an improvement. Maybe the one Dollywood is getting will be better.

Those power splash coasters like what SFOT and SFOG and some others have just look like gimmicks. Fun once I suppose. Speaking of which, SFOG's (made by Intamin) won't reopen until 2027. Looks like it needs a completely new train.

I think the river rapids rides aren't going to be replaced in-kind though, at least not on a 1-for-1 basis. They take up a lot of real estate, need large crews, use a lot of electricity to run, and are relatively expensive to maintain - not to mention that the industry's insurers have a dim view of them because of several high profile accidents resulting in fatalities.

That's literally an airtime bunny hop. People always assume you get those sensations from going down fast when it's actually about sustained downwards acceleration at ~9.8ms^2 . It's always counter-intuitive to people who never took physics that the weightless sensation starts as you're still going uphill.

Loggers leap at Thorpe Park had an incredible drop due to it being a 'double' drop, you felt like the boat would go flying off the hill. These kinds of drops on flumes weren't massively popular as they looked milder than a straight drop but they've been replaced with bunnyhops at the bottom which still look imposing whilst giving you the pop of airtime.

Only other double drop I still know of in Valhalla.

On a related note, I just saw the log flume episode of American Dad. They actually researched it, I wasn't expecting Nightmare Niagra to get name dropped

It's one of the reasons powered coasters (especially Arrow ones) are so reliant helixes and turns, because they already tend to be near max speed so a large drop would be forceless once you've crested.

I was on Carousel of Progress yesterday trying to get my last ride on it before they butcher it, when allegedly a power surge caused by an intense lightning storm practically shut down the entire Disney World resort.
Ride ops tried to get the show back on so we started to watch the same scene again. Ultimately the carousel wouldn't spin so we all got evacuated anyway. For like an hour at least there was practically nothing to do in the park, all the major attractions were affected and queues were closed.

Ironically, this happened right as I was in the 4th of July scene in which a major punchline is that a bunch of electrical fuses pop. The audience was laughing a lot with the added context of the ride itself having problems (John's head stopped moving, right side turntable got stuck mid rotation so you could see both scenes).

I tried riding again later once things started coming back online and sadly the ride didn't recover well. Audio was desynced pretty bad throughout the entire show and the turntable that got stuck was simply disabled.

Sad way to send it off but oh well.

Thankfully I'm planning to hit up all three of the big parks on my trip, so I'll get the best of all the worlds, but I'm really looking forward to the dark rides at Efteling as much as any of the coasters.

Been going here since I was a kid. God-tier park. If you're more of a coaster person you will still probably prefer parks like Europa Park or Phantasialand, their coasters are objectively superior, but if you can appreciate dark rides and theming this is one of the best theme parks in the world.

Efteling can be done in one day but only on a slow day, otherwise you're just speedrunning the coasters and most notorious dark rides, but you'll be skipping over a lot of the park and most likely never even stepping a foot in the fairy tale forest, in which case why the fuck even come here? Imo Efteling is a park best experienced by slowing down and taking in all the sights, which is really hard to do if you only have one day and you've never been. Last year I took some friends to Efteling for the first time, and they agreed two days is probably best if you're a first-timer.

Universal has a few individual areas that are better than Disneyland but no complete products. Celestial Gateway and Paris or whatever it is are badly themed. Lost Continent sticks out like a sore thumb. Seussland is always in need of a new coat of paint. Sight lines at Islands are awful.

To be fair DL isn't the best when it comes to sightlines either, IMO its main strength is the large amount of "middle ground" rides, most other major parks give you E-tickets and flat rides with nothing in between

Great Adventure does not get much attendance now outside school visit days and Halloween events. Even Flash has been a walk on with even worse capacity so I think the capacity issue is overblown

Is Six Flags St Louis any good? I am wanting to make a 5hr trip out to Silver Dollar City, and my route takes me through St. Louis, so I am thinking of breaking up the drive with a trip to Six Flags. But I have never seen the park talked about at all.

Cedar Point isn't regional. Both its workers and its guests often come from other countries. Unfortunately, its appeal isn't wide enough to actually charge for admission. My brother got in twice in May with his gold pass he purchased for $55 from SFOG last year. If he went to a quality park he would have had to spend money.
