I was looking for snowy onsen towns a few years back as well. I didn't end up going to any, but I narrowed down a few good ones.Ginzan onsen is the insta famous one if you don't mind paying a premium.Nyuto onsen if you like nature and can sort out the logistics of getting to bumfuck nowhere.Hanamaki onsen was an interesting one. Its just outside hanamaki town, has a botanic garden and nature walk. Its got a few big family style resorts around it, but some traditional ryokans as well.Aizuwakamatsu town has some onsen towns to the east and south, those would be good if you like traditional architecture.I haven't looked at any onsen towns around the alps, but they would still be pretty snowy.

Got back from my first trip a couple of days ago. Have wanted to visit for 15+ years. Totally different from what I expected. On my first trip I just took bullet trains everywhere, but the costs for those rack up real quick so this time I want to save money on transport as much as I can, while still being able to tour a lot of places. These aren't in any particular order, and I might not visit all of them in one trip if the logistics don't support it. I'm also interested in finally seeing Hokkaido, but for there I think the obvious plan is to take a domestic flight, from what I'm seeing they aren't even all that expensive. I'll probably be staying at least 4 weeks so I should have time to visit a good amount of spots. Also taking suggestions for places that are easy to get to from Tokyo especially, or ones that might be on the route somewhere in the places mentioned above.

Is renting a detached house around the outskirts of Tokyo for 6 months doable? Plenty of furnished apartments and the odd luxury house in one of the central wards but I've yet to see actual 'normal' suburban detached, furnished houses for mid-term rental.

On paper, Kinshicho sounds like a great place to stay in Japan. It is close to Otemachi, and since it is on the Hanzomon Line, the commute is never crowded. I always hear that Tokyo people are 'cold' and robotic, especially after COVID. Hospitality for them = ¥¥¥ rolling in. It's made them less uptight than the Tokyo-ites in general.In either city you will not want for diversions and events going on, but in any Japanese city making friends will likely come down to engaging in a shared hobby with someone like playing rec-league soccer or showing up to the same bar repeatedly. Stuff like that. Even then, do you go out of your way to make friends with foreigners visiting your country? Don't count on being drowned with constant social interactions.
