Has anyone here had any experience using Workaway? I've been looking at it and and off for a couple of years. Now I'm approaching a stage in my life where I could actually do something like this. I'd really like to read some experiences from people who have done this or similar things so I can get a realistic view of what it's actually like.

Read their profile, the reviews etc. Vibe it out and see if it seems cool for you and then contact them , ideally video or talk phonecall and be clear on what work you will do and on food and housing conditions.Most hosts that have been doing it for years have also figured out how to be sure it will work for everyone to be sure someone doesnt show up and be upset when they have to use kerosene heaters or eat something weird for lunch.Your mileage might very and obviously every host and opportunity is different .

Every experience is different. Working for free can feel very tiresome after a while, if your heart is not in the project you are working on then it's like "why am I grinding away for nothing?" I used WWOOF for several workstays, didn't truly enjoy any of them and was usually happy to leave and resume solo travel. Many hosts won't approve your stay unless they are certain you will leave a glowing review, even if you have already shown up and commenced work. So don't be gullible and get suckered in by 4.9/5 reviews that make hoeing weeds sound like the most fun and amazing experience; it's all curated. Best if you are a cityfag who craves that kind of wholesome food and agrarian immersion, reconnect with your ancestral roots blah blah...such characters while less productive often enjoy their stay immensely and spread tons of positivity furing their stay. If you already do some kind of labor for a living or cook your own wholesome meals, it will just feel like more of the same, minus the paycheck (and the booze, and the weed). Yes you spend very little, which makes workstay seem worthehile for expensive destinations like Hawaii, but all you will have to show for weeks of toil is a hug, a "thank you" and a glowing review on your profile. The host OTOH will reap all the benefits of your improvements to the property. If you're lucky you will go out together on a big outing on the weekends, get to experience the area, maybe even hook up with a granola girl. But they are usually very picky, they don't want some plain vanilla white farmboy wannabe unless he is a real ladies man.
