The first season was so great. My hope was that they would continue to employ clever trickery and spy shit to systematically kill each of the Seven one by one, like they did with Translucent. There would be an overall mission and they would stick to it. The first season had the same goofy shit as the later seasons but there was also a grit to it, it felt like there were stakes and real shit could happen anytime. Instead, we get one fun and satisfying supe death, then the show becomes completely aimless drivel and introduces a bunch of characters no one gives a fuck about for the next 4 seasons, and everything is just all over the fucking place. Really terrible demise.

S1 was the only season that was truly quality TV. The slopification did indeed begin in S2 but it still maintained a certain quality and remained entertaining enough until the very end of S3. You can very clearly tell the budget was not enough in the later seasons, and the show and story suffered hard from it

>After that he only ever uses one tentacle at a time and it's just to grab and throw people

Budget issues aside, I'm genuinely baffled that they chose to market the final season with promo shots of Homelander in space looking at the destruction on earth, shots of Butcher and the boys in front of a destroyed Vought tower, just for the "big destruction" to be a some walls get holes in them. The average viewer is probably pissed off about that

They clearly wrote him to be too powerful and couldn't realistically think of how to stretch the plot out without Homelander killing the boys easily. So instead they nerfed him and made him dumb.
And that's one of the biggest insults. Homelander in the first season wasn't a genius, but he was clever enough to be manipulative. He definitely overestimated how smart he was, but he was probably slightly above average when it comes to intelligence

This was a perfect scene to show that he's not just all muscle, he's actually smart enough to manipulate the public and using them to get what he wants.

The show became to drama what late-night talk shows became to comedy. Getting applause of agreement instead of applause and laughs for telling a good story or a good joke.

Homelander needed to remain incredibly smart and dangerous. I'd say even killing someone important like MM by the end of Season 1. But he also needs to die off way sooner as to not destroy his character. He's the type of antagonist that needs to burn twice as hot but half as long. Look at Geoffrey in GoT. If you drag it on too long it weakens them. They had to invent reasons for Homelander to not go apeshit despite having all the power to do so.

The real antagonist of the entire show should have been the Vought bosses. Some message about what true power is and who the real enemy is.

This is how it works with every streaming show. They make a good first couple seasons to capture audience, then send the showrunner of to seed new successful IPs which is more valuable for the service.

They aren't there to capture ad dollars anymore, so having more IPs to advertise the service with is more valuable than sustained viewership.
