The whole "strong female character" thing is just a stupid direction to consider a character anyway. A character being a "good example" or some shit doesn't have any real bearing on the quality of the movie or show or if the character itself is interesting. It's just something for people to bitch about endlessly

Yes. A great example was was Sicario. Emily Blunt character was the very opposite of a strong female character but movie was great, however when done right like Aliens it can elevate the entire movie.

No. The fact her maternal instincts kicked-in to overdrive belie your words. A man would have considered the needs of the many first, inb4 the paternal instincts retort.

This character, and the entire arc of the movie, was ruined by the completely needless flash forward at the end.
Whole movie is depicting her as this stubborn, ambitious, but impudent character, then in the climax she's humbled and in desperate need of rescue. The man she dismissed as a useless drunk hack moves mountains to save her life. It was the perfect arc.
Then for no reason, they gotta depict her as a bossy old lady and make sure the audience knew she never had a spouse or family, just went on to spend her life copping attitude with strangers.

>The roles of Sara Connor or Eowyn can't work if you change them to be man.
Sara Conner can, because there was no actual need for the mate (in canon, Kyle Reese) to die for the character to work. Everything could have been a gender swap, the female from the future got knocked up and survived the encounter with Terminator, as well as the male version of Sara, and then perhaps died, stayed around, whatever. Sara Conner being female was not a requirement, since the story is about someone that is meek learning they have a greater purpose. Grace from Project Hail Mary is essentially a male version of the same character.

The thing is that strong female characters still require a certain kind of female vulnerability. All the best ones who resonate with audiences have this trait, but we're at a stage in discourse where people don't want to admit that there are distinctive differences between men and women, so women are just written to be identical to men. The only thing they'll get today resembling a uniquely female challenge is when a male character is chauvinistic towards them and they shut him up by proving him wrong.

>The thing is that strong female characters still require a certain kind of female vulnerability.
The two most cited examples I have seen of the ideal strong female characters in modern cinema are Sara Conner and Helel Ripley. Of the two, Sara shows more vulnerability in their debut, but hardens up before the second movie. Ripley is more of a hardass in the debut (outside moments of panic in the latter half as things fall apart), but softens up and becomes more feminine (motherly to Newt, a budding romantic attraction between her and Hicks) in the second. Both push past fear to think on their feet and act to get things done (which is why they are considered "strong"), though Ripley has the advantage of already being a professional use to stressful, life threatenting work situations vs. Sara has more mundane experience. For strong female characters, it seems that they have to find strength by being exposed to situations outside of their control and persevering, while men are strong if they simply exhibit inherently male charactesitics. Females have to rise to the occasion, while men are just expected to endure the situation without breaking.

>>220666514
blast from the past, but it checks out. However, it kind of fits the stereotype that Conner and Ripley (at least Aliens Ripley) fall into; they find their strength in the maternal instinct. They are strong because children require them to be strong, unborn or not.

With how the phrase under discussion is typically applied, Wedensday is probably more accurately labels as a female character that is strong. Her strength does not stem from being fermale (something she simply suppresses most of the time), but from pure strength of will. Its more masculine than feminine.

I dont know their lore sufficiently, but from the new shows it does seem she have some power of premonition or visions. I know that the new show lore is that she is decended from witches. But I believe they are not under her control and happen only when prompted by certain situations (that seem related to the subject matter of the vision she has).

Sort of a good example, though I would place her into the same category as Wednesday; a female character who is strong. She is a professional soldier, and her "strength" is mostly a function of being a professional performing their role. Thus her sex is not a source of strength. That being said I remember jack all from SG-1.

Why does one's sex need to be a source of strength? What a retarded criteria you have. Sam being a highly competent professional + a woman is exactly why she's done well. It's all the "ah I'm a woman here me roar" shit that's so utterly distasteful, and you can only write so many stories about motherbear characters before wearing out the trope for a good while.

They even intentionally changed historical facts to fit their goal of portraying her as insane.

Her sister wasn't murdered and raped. Her entire family left before the Burgundians arrived.

She did not find a random sword in a field. She pointed to a spot UNDER THE FLOOR OF A CHURCH she has never been to and told the men to dig, and they found a pristine relic of a sword beneath.

OTOH, they still leave hints in the movie she's genuine, like her recognizing the Dolphin among a crowd of noblemen.

A good example would be the female co-protag in True Grit, with John Wayne, or Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holidays, or Miss Marple.

How would you define those characters? Like what key features make them strong women?
With Ripley, for instance, at no point does she overpower or directly fight the xenomorph in Alien.

I agree that Ripley is a strong female character, but since part of her strength overlaps with a male archetype I think it's not the best example. She's (over)mentioned because she's a famous successful character, but I think it's better to use other examples to avoid confusion, especially among disingenuous ideologues.

>Like what key features make them strong women?
1 - Being a strongly written character that happens to be a woman (as in the writing must be strong, well made)
2 - Her qualities must derive by female archetypes and not male archetypes. (it doesn't mean all overlaps are forbidden, but then it gets a little nebulous and really depend on execution at some point)

Has to be noted that you cannot reduce these things to a checklist or a formula (another reason girlbosses fails as characters), and in the end it also depend on your critical thinking, since the same concept can have wildly different executions. "I can't precisely define porn, but I know it when I see it" is not a meme and doesn't make the definition nebulous one bit

The problem with strong female characters is the same as the problem with strong male characters
It requires masculine/feminine traits without being a parody of itself

Most 'strong' female characters have to learn into either male traits or else their 'female' traits are just naturally enhancing them to make them better than male characters

Elle from Legally Blonde is a decent strong female - still keeps her feminine traits, doesn't need to 'be better than the men at male things' and doesn't sacrifice her whole image to 'beat the boys'

The biggest misconception that 3rd/4th wave feminsts sell you is that a 'strong' woman isn't equal to a man, it's that feminine attributes should 'replace' male ones
IE a woman who's a fashion designer can save the day by designing a special material that only she worked out using her fashion skills that no man ever could despite thousands upon thousands of men in the military trying to over a decade. This one woman is the strong woman characte rbecause she beat the boys and that is feminism according to 3rd and 4th waves dykes

>>

Fair enough. I dunno why, of all people, Tarantino ends up being able to write somewhat normal female characters, however. His weakest is probably the Bride.
>>
>Lucille Bluth
>Glenn Close in almost any role
>Meryl Streep in almost any role
>Kiera in PotC (usually)
>Charlize in Aeon Flux
It really isn’t an issue of “strong” women so much as it’s trying to write a woman specifically to make a point instead of writing a character of exceptional drive or direction, who is a woman.

It doesn't have the same effect if Sarah ain't the one giving birth to John in T2. That's why she decided to not kill that guy.
>>
>>220666069
>Of the two, Sara shows more vulnerability in their debut, but hardens up before the second movie
In the movie, this is a flaw. She rejects her tenderness and motherhood to rather become a mentor for John. It's until the end when she realizes she's not a murderer but rather someone who creates life in her body that she goes back to her senses and to be John's mother.

By far the most realistic strong female charcter

>isn't particularly physically adept, but not a sloth either, more than capable of pulling her weight
>retains her femininity (looks, dresses, and behaves like a girl, likes another boy her age, etc.)
>isn't a genius by any means, but has above average deductive reasoning and is capable of learning and adapting quickly
>isn't naturally inclined towards violence, but is capable of opportunistic violence when forced into a life-or-death situation
>strength comes her loving nature, virtuous moral character, and intelligence (or being in touch with the best traits of femininity rather than attempting to deny or suppress them)
>hornier than a bitch in the heat when around the boy she's in love with

Basically any girl or woman could be like her, whereas the likes of Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley have an unnatural talent for violence that sets them apart from most other women.

She was right to be bitchy. If they'd listened to her none of it would've happened. Dallas was the fuckup cowboy captain and Ash lept on his decision to override protocol and open the airlock. In an alternate reality Dallas wasn't a retard and Parker actually got his bonus.

It's easy to forget how badass Lois Lane is and always has been, because she melts like butter when it comes to Superman and needs saving so often. But the rest of the time she's a top reporter who doesn't afraid of anything, (and wasn't before Superman was there to save her). Yet she's still unashamedly a woman, using her feminine wiles in pursuit of a story, etc.

Modern versions are feminist slopperized, but even in the 50's she was a respected professional who'd tell Clark Kent and Perry White to fuck off. Most telling is that Perry didn't hire her because she had a vagina, and gives zero fucks about it when it comes to the job. Watching a good version of his character just wrangling the crazy bitch is entertainment, but they obviously have a mutual professional respect:

Easy to forget Aliens is a four-for-one deal:
Ripley
Vasquez, (in your face)
Ferro, (badass enough to go for her pistol when shocked to discover aliens are real at close range).
Dietrich, (dies early but still a space marine who displays knowledge/competence).

Nah this is where the problem really began. Linda said that James wanted Sarah to shave her head completely, but Linda didn't want to got Sarah with a ponytail as a compromise.
James Cameron is one of those Hollywood secret homosexuals you often hear about, in case the lack of feminine women in every single movie he ever made didn't make that obvious.
