The whole "strong female character" thing is just a stupid direction to consider a character anyway. A character being a "good example" or some shit doesn't have any real bearing on the quality of the movie or show or if the character itself is interesting. It's just something for people to bitch about endlessly

>>220664913>compassion and serenity and emotional control are the things they need to work onThis *is* strength, ya dumb ape
>>220664978>good character who happened to be a womanNo. The fact her maternal instincts kicked-in to overdrive belie your words. A man would have considered the needs of the many first, inb4 the paternal instincts retort.

>>220663937This character, and the entire arc of the movie, was ruined by the completely needless flash forward at the end.Whole movie is depicting her as this stubborn, ambitious, but impudent character, then in the climax she's humbled and in desperate need of rescue. The man she dismissed as a useless drunk hack moves mountains to save her life. It was the perfect arc. Then for no reason, they gotta depict her as a bossy old lady and make sure the audience knew she never had a spouse or family, just went on to spend her life copping attitude with strangers.

>>220664641>The definitive example of strong female character
>>220665284>The roles of Sara Connor or Eowyn can't work if you change them to be man.Sara Conner can, because there was no actual need for the mate (in canon, Kyle Reese) to die for the character to work. Everything could have been a gender swap, the female from the future got knocked up and survived the encounter with Terminator, as well as the male version of Sara, and then perhaps died, stayed around, whatever. Sara Conner being female was not a requirement, since the story is about someone that is meek learning they have a greater purpose. Grace from Project Hail Mary is essentially a male version of the same character.
>>220664641This is the correct answer>>220664978In the first half of the film she perfectly embodied a bitchy female team lead in a workplace, the femininity is ingrained in her even if the lines could be said by a man.
>>220665570Brilliant summation.
>>220663937The thing is that strong female characters still require a certain kind of female vulnerability. All the best ones who resonate with audiences have this trait, but we're at a stage in discourse where people don't want to admit that there are distinctive differences between men and women, so women are just written to be identical to men. The only thing they'll get today resembling a uniquely female challenge is when a male character is chauvinistic towards them and they shut him up by proving him wrong.

>>220665849>The thing is that strong female characters still require a certain kind of female vulnerability. The two most cited examples I have seen of the ideal strong female characters in modern cinema are Sara Conner and Helel Ripley. Of the two, Sara shows more vulnerability in their debut, but hardens up before the second movie. Ripley is more of a hardass in the debut (outside moments of panic in the latter half as things fall apart), but softens up and becomes more feminine (motherly to Newt, a budding romantic attraction between her and Hicks) in the second. Both push past fear to think on their feet and act to get things done (which is why they are considered "strong"), though Ripley has the advantage of already being a professional use to stressful, life threatenting work situations vs. Sara has more mundane experience. For strong female characters, it seems that they have to find strength by being exposed to situations outside of their control and persevering, while men are strong if they simply exhibit inherently male charactesitics. Females have to rise to the occasion, while men are just expected to endure the situation without breaking.

>>220666514blast from the past, but it checks out. However, it kind of fits the stereotype that Conner and Ripley (at least Aliens Ripley) fall into; they find their strength in the maternal instinct. They are strong because children require them to be strong, unborn or not.
>>220666024
>>220666855With how the phrase under discussion is typically applied, Wedensday is probably more accurately labels as a female character that is strong. Her strength does not stem from being fermale (something she simply suppresses most of the time), but from pure strength of will. Its more masculine than feminine.
>>220666979Does she have any powers? Premonition right? See the future?
>>220667000I dont know their lore sufficiently, but from the new shows it does seem she have some power of premonition or visions. I know that the new show lore is that she is decended from witches. But I believe they are not under her control and happen only when prompted by certain situations (that seem related to the subject matter of the vision she has).

>>220666979I just posted her because I like her.
>>220667016Sort of a good example, though I would place her into the same category as Wednesday; a female character who is strong. She is a professional soldier, and her "strength" is mostly a function of being a professional performing their role. Thus her sex is not a source of strength. (it doesn't mean all overlaps are forbidden, but then it gets a little nebulous and really depend on execution at some point)Has to be noted that you cannot reduce these things to a checklist or a formula (another reason girlbosses fails as characters), and in the end it also depend on your critical thinking, since the same concept can have wildly different executions. >>220663937The problem with strong female characters is the same as the problem with strong male charactersIt requires masculine/feminine traits without being a parody of itselfMost 'strong' female characters have to learn into either male traits or else their 'female' traits are just naturally enhancing them to make them better than male charactersElle from Legally Blonde is a decent strong female - still keeps her feminine traits, doesn't need to 'be better than the men at male things' and doesn't sacrifice her whole image to 'beat the boys'The biggest misconception that 3rd/4th wave feminsts sell you is that a 'strong' woman isn't equal to a man, it's that feminine attributes should 'replace' male onesIE a woman who's a fashion designer can save the day by designing a special material that only she worked out using her fashion skills that no man ever could despite thousands upon thousands of men in the military trying to over a decade. It's easy to forget how badass Lois Lane is and always has been, because she melts like butter when it comes to Superman and needs saving so often. But the rest of the time she's a top reporter who doesn't afraid of anything, (and wasn't before Superman was there to save her). Yet she's still unashamedly a woman, using her feminine wiles in pursuit of a story, etc.Modern versions are feminist slopperized, but even in the 50's she was a respected professional who'd tell Clark Kent and Perry White to fuck off. Most telling is that Perry didn't hire her because she had a vagina, and gives zero fucks about it when it comes to the job.
