OH MY SCIENCE!! Is that— is that an… EMPTY ROOM??! AAAAAAHHH I’M LOOSING MY MIIIIIIIIIIND

Your grandpa didn't get blair witch. You don't get the backrooms.

The only people who "got" the Blair witch were low IQ faggot posers who were too self conscious about their understanding of media to admit it was a shit and retarded movie.

our instincts tell us there's a monster in the woods, but we don't live in the woods. it's an ancient archetype in a modern context. we only know the built environment now

The scariest thing to a zoomer is being stuck for even 1 minute in an empty room that’s not filled to the brim with distractions and with walls thick enough to block cell signal. They just can’t imagine being stuck with their own thoughts for a minute.
>>
>>220666479
nta.
The problem with the argument surrounding blair witch is its people who "get" the themes , style etc etc arguing with people disliking how not scary it is. these are two different arguments.

That the horror comes from it looking like a bunch of kids filmed themselves in the woods, something supernatural happened, and they went missing and the tape was found. Why whoever found that tape would prance about and distribute it to cinemas is anyone's guess, but that's what suspension of disbelief is for

At its core, it's not a horror film about a witch -- it's the fear of the unknown and the fragility of human sanity. Rather than relying on graphic monsters, it explores how isolation, exhaustion, and creeping paranoia can unravel interpersonal relationships and break down society’s structures. The film communicates this not through traditional horror -- but something unseen. The directors deliberately kept the witch unseen, relying entirely on disembodied sounds (crying children, snapping twigs, rocks) to let the audience's imagination build a much scarier threat than any visual effect. As the trio aimlessly circles the woods, starvation and lack of sleep destroy their composure. The true horror becomes their psychological deterioration and descent into madness.
The film highlights how groups don't stay composed -- they fall apart under stress. When leaders (Heather) make mistakes, followers (Mike) rebel and make irrational, destructive decisions, such as kicking their only map into the creek. The dense, seemingly endless forest acts as an isolating barrier. Nature transforms from an ordinary camping environment into a hostile, inescapable labyrinth that toy with the characters.
>>
>>220668153
That is scary as all fuck.

>>220668042
Must have been a thing when they were kids or teens. I was a college senior when it came out and there was buzz, but the buzz was: just any other contribution to the horror genre like Jason and Freddy. Nobody thought it was deeper than that. The thing about the Blair witch project was the hype before the release and the fact it was ad libbed with the actors getting a gps coordinate with instructions of what's happening with the characters like the girl being told you are stressed out and you feel like you're losing control. The male actors got notes saying you're starting to question her judgment and decisions. Etc. It wasn't scripted. So it kind of felt genuine. Story is dumb but it was also revolutionary at the time. Probably wouldn't enjoy it now. I've given backrooms many chances with videos, video games etc and it never once felt spooky or scary.
>>
>>220668681
I have directly influenced by fictional and non fictional global events and media. I know that my ideas and concepts have directly changed the entire world.

I contributed to several scps, that in turn went in to influence other cultural touchstones. I also had a hand in numerous tropes and creepypasta elements and structure.

I have entire genres I created.

But by the nature of them I will always be nameless and uncredited. Creation is its own reward. Every time I hear a kid talk about fnaf in the background of some insta post or see a scene in a tv show or movie I am reminded of my influence and contribution to humanity being tangible and meaningful in more ways than most will ever achieve.

Also i have entire tv shows, videogames and vernacular that stems from my creation. I also probably affected political developments in america and australia with other things that I know would not exist without me.

I sometimes wonder how the world would look without my butterfly effecf. For example: create a fictional writing, said writing influences another user to create something, said work influences genre, said genre influences then gestalt consciousness, derivative and other works spawn from that, younger people inspired by said works and they create their own.

Without me entire swathes of the internet and real world would be vastly changed. It sounds silly but I have done some gaming and “trees” connecting it all and significant portions of entire cultures stem directly from my action and influence.

The appeal for me is that it is a surface for your imagination and threat interpretation. Like a forest, jungle, or foreign planet. I like it. Interesting to hear that you don't. Maybe some people like some things and some people don't. And the people that like a thing may like it for a multitude of different reasons. Maybe someone likes the backrooms solely for the bland yellow color and the subtle shadows, but they don't find it creepy. It's also important to note that it is a pretty casual thing and doesn't necessarily have to be viewed as kind of obnoxious mystery. Maybe one can make their own interpretation of it and then hear what kinds of thoughts other people have of it. I think it's pretty cool.

The concept of being swallowed up by the very fabric of reality into some intangible utterly alien yet deceitfully familiar area is frightening.

Kanes’ series that shows missing 3 year old posters and depicts entire cars phasing out while on the highway is fascinating horror by implication and extrapolation.

The Backrooms represents the unknown and intangible. Being put somewhere you really really shouldn’t be. The indifference and evil of monotonous buzzing lights as you wander hopelessly until you just die. The worst part being that you don’t anger some ancient god or receive pubishment by someone, you just phase out of your bed one day and there you are. No one is coming. No one can get to you. You are dead and you don’t know it. You are now just a statistic.

Then you see something move out the corner of your eye. Beside the graffiti indicating that someone else is alive in here…

Have you even gone through widthdrawls or maybe had your hear broken? Listening to certain music or even the tactile experience of your fingers touching some fabric will become hellish.

Id imagine the same would be true while you die of dehydration surrounded by buzzing lights in some shag carpeted hellscape. Maybe im not doing this concept justice? Its not so much the physical thing itself but more what it is attributed to and associated with.

the concept of being condemned to a prison is scarier than the actual confrontation of prison

there are also prisons of the mind,
the mind a prison which you are condemned to
if you express that abstraction, the prison in your head, and everything you find scary about it
then you get something like the backrooms

>>
>>220671209
I don't know that much about the backrooms, but I feel like from what I have seen about it the simpler the better. The most appealing thing about the backrooms as a horror thing from my perspective is the idea of aimless wandering where you can't even tell if you're making progress in escaping, if you even could escape. Solving puzzles to get to the swimming pool or soft play area part of the backrooms feels like it ruins the bleakness of it.
>>
>>220674083
Do you live in a densely populated area/have you spent a significant portion of your life in one? Or do you live in/have spent most of your life in a more rural area?

I don't understand the mid-wit crash outs over concepts like this, especially if you're a millennial that's still under 40. We grew up in these environments and were often left to our own devices to run around malls unsupervised as young as 7 years old, not to mention the restaurant playcenters we crawled around in, coming up with our own storylines about being trapped in tube slides, etc.

This should be the one thing Millennials and Zoomers should be able to unite about. It is awesome, and if you don't think it is, then you're probably even older than me, and I'm 37.

The original backrooms post works solely because it is 3 sentences long and doesn't go on on autistic deep dive of backroom levels and whatever other gay FNAF shit people have done to the original concept.
What is the inherent pathological need people have to leave their mark on something that doesn't need or want explanation?
I cant think of a single horror franchise that was made scarier by pedantically expanding the lore. The unknown is an inherent part of the horror.
Not everything scary needs to be spooky warhammer 40k like the SCP foundation

tell yourself that next time you feel the need to explain your typos, lil ahh bitch
>>

No, it's completely normal because I GREW UP WITH THIS SHIT, as I previously stated in this thread. Anyone around my age understands the appeal of backrooms as a concept. I'm excited to see a young director doing something with the idea. I was a child when malls peaked and a teenager when they started to decline. Same with playrooms and the like. If you are around my age and don't understand this shit, then you're probably from a favela or something.

That only happens if anon shows weakness and insecurity by trying to explain his typo when it doesn't matter at all

i'm gonna be honest i kinda understand this redditor

i live in a supposedly "rich" country (actually just a shithole european country). the only "richness" in our country is in the capital city, where i live. if you move 100 kilometers outside the city's borders, everything else is fucking unimaginable low wavelength dogshit. there's nothing, literally nothing. no amenities, no services, no entertainment, no jobs, no growth, no young people, nothing.

it is an absolutely terrifying feeling.

Your scared of nature? Is the lorax a horror movie to you as well?
>>

I can understand being displeased going from civilization to worse civilization. Run down buildings covered in graffiti, poor options for food and lodgings. But even all that I can tolerate if it’s a place where the natural beauty of the world shines through. I never get tired of being out in nature.
