This movie had so much potential, then blew it. The whole hook of the movie is>average guy gets fed up and accidentally lives out every wagie's dream of rebelling against societybut it's undercut half way through the move when it's revealed he's a loser that lives with his mom, has anger issues, and is divorced and unable to see his kid.Loses all relatability as, despite Hollywood's deliberate misunderstanding of the average American male, most dudes are not weak spinless losers. Most dudes are just doing their best to get by, but that would've been too morally gray for Hollywood, so fuck it, make the protagonist beat his wife so we can vilify him easier.

He didn't beat his wife, there's a scene where this is made clear, although it's obvious she could tell he had become unhinged, even though he was never explicitly evil. There's home video footage played that showed his state of mind when his daughter didn't want to ride the little toy horsey and he tries to force it to the point his daughter starts crying and it leads to an argument. He was desperate for the idyllic wholesome family life .I'm not saying he was the good guy of the movie, since he had become bitter and cynical to the extreme and went completely over the edge, but we follow his point of view for most of the movie which gives him a degree of sympathy throughout, even when it's obvious he was going for a murder suicide at the end.
