The fake story where he had this all American childhood. So even if they are cheering for him, it's not really him, because it's a complete fabrication by the company that has destroyed his life. Homelander knows this, that's also where his frustrations came from in the earlier seasons, that they just paraded him around as some mascot. To him, due to the ignorance of society as a whole as to what was actually done to him, they are also complicit in what was done to him. And as he finds out, people fear him rather than love him, that's why he respects people who don't have that fear. They basically spun a web where there isn't a single way out for him.
