For adpatations, they start strong but burn through the best source material quickly. As time goes on, the writers believe the success of their show is wholly in their ideas and not in the world building and story structure from the source material.

So they start writing in their own stuff without regard for the original theme. They do this for many seasons, and by the end the story they've written is miles apart from the theme, and so there's no closure and no cohesion.

I honestly think the hate for The Boys finale is astroturfed and way too overblown. You could watch the entirety of The Boys from the first season to the final episode and still come out of it feeling mostly satisfied because everything they built up towards was paid off with exception to the Gen V characters (which no one watched) and Soldier Boy (who's getting his own show, whether it was worth ruining his buildup in the main show for this remains to be seen). Sure, the drop off in quality after s1 would be there, but compared to something like Thrones where you could rewatch the whole thing but you'll struggle to continue after season 6 because of how that show dropped the fucking ball in such an incredible fashion that it fell out of the culture zeitgeist FOREVER in an instant with how bad it was.

It's just that they picked the least interesting angle every time. It's extra frustrating because the show always had these high points where it seemed to 'get it', so it was possible to have hope they'd still have something to say.

Compare it to Venture Bros, where they had the obvious parodies do obvious gags, and they used them to create a subtle and satisfying story about a kind of corporate culture and a supe subculture.

For my take, The Boys has not been great season Season 1. Each season afterward had less gas than the previous. 3 was pretty good, but 2 and 4 and a great amount of 5 could have been removed entirely and nothing substantial would have changed. The budget went down with each season and Anthony Starr seemed less into it as time went on. Fundamentally, I think the problem with the entire series is that they didn't really know what to do with Homelander. He was a flimsy Trump proxy, he was internally unstable and weak, and they always hinted that he would go full nuts, but never did, even at the very end.

GoT went past the source, got high on their own fandom. ST was supposed to be 1 season 1 group, with s2 being the run aways we see in either s2 or s3 idr, also kept jumping its own shark. Homelander's death just felt like a bit of wasted opportunity to me. Felt like it was too rushed. There was no clever plan, they just kind of lucked out and he jobbed and got blasted. He gets depowered for like 15 seconds and then die. Him being depowered is such an interesting thing to explore - imagine, he can't see trough walls, he can't hear people's heartbeats, matter of fact for the first time he can't hear almost anything, only what a normal person does. He should panic, he should have an existential crisis. I don't know, have him try to fly and fall on his face and break his nose, have him need to understand feeling pain for the first time, have him look at his own blood. Have characters who were previously afraid of him like Ashley or Deep interact with his powerless self, rather than just Butcher who never feared him to begin with. I would also probably have him die in a way that is directly caused by his powerlessness rather than just directly murdered by Butcher. Could have been an entire episode.

Also i want to add that lik everyone already pointed out, the series main antagonist wasn't Homelander at the beginning, it was Vought, and they're still going strong. But more than that, Homelander was 100% a victim. He never really had a chance at a normal life, he suffered a lot of abuse. I mean the show recognizes this. There's plenty of times where we're shown a sympathetic side to him. But amidst the complete flanderization of his character that nuance was just lost. Especially because he just became the trump/hitler analogue which in writing terms is carte blanche to hating him unilaterally... except you already presented him as a victim before, so it feels strange. This ending is perfect for Vought, Homelander gets killed and everyone forgets they're the problem.
