No that's not how it would work. In early history of the solar system Earth was hit by a Mars sized planet and survived. The debris of that collision is where our moon came from. An asteroid the size of Texas would split the earths crust and destroy all life but the planet itself would survive.
>>
>>220739887

It's projected to be a near miss this time in it's orbit... Ostensibly. But it might have enough gas or ice in it which will melt and act as thrust as it gets closer to the Sun. Expelled gas and steam could act as a subtle thrust, as it warms. That adds an unknown variable to its exact vector. It's worrisome.
>>
>>220742187
>Earth was hit by a Mars sized planet and survived
>and survive
Not really anon. It blasted off about a quarter of earth's mass into orbit, turned the crust molten, and over the next hundred thousand years everything that didn't coalesce into the moon rained back onto the planet.

It would still cause BIG problems. If a super massive volcano forms at the impact zone, it could spew ash and noxious gasses for decades. That would be a global problem for food production and transport of crude oil.

The island is worth it just for that chase scene alone. Also MCD running around with his chest open freaking the fuck out and going hulk mode is horrifying.
It also has a fairly interesting twist in the final act.
Its a dumb sloppy movie that feels like a YA novel directed by Michael Bay, but its perfectly watchable and has plenty of good moments.

Unless it's more solid and rocky than anticipated. Scientific observations can't determine composition well for such a relatively small object. I'm not advocating an impending worst case event, but merely pointing out that it would be bad and disruptive if it did. And besides, if there was a really, really bad asteroid coming our way, would experts talk about it? Would they tell anybody if they knew impact couldn't be avoided?
>>
>>220745191
> Would they tell anybody if they knew impact couldn't be avoided?
Fuck no they wouldn’t. They probably wouldn’t even be allowed. Idk how much stargazing you do, but at any point in time there’s usually some comets visible, it’s scary to think if one of them was secretly on its way here. They appear out of nowhere on different nights as well
