Troy is shit, it's Hollywood capeslop just putatively set in ancient Greece
>>220751591>That performance bothered me because there was a trap in the writing. It’s not the writing’s fault, but it was something that I couldn’t figure out. What the fuck is he saying
>>220751591>Illiad>not a "quality story"
Here is the full thing:Looking at the arc of your career, it seems as if a real shift happened somewhere around 2004. You started working more exclusively with higher-caliber directors. And maybe as a result, your acting had this new depth to it. I can see a line from then to now. Sorry, I realize that’s an observation and not a question. But you’re absolutely right. I’m happy someone could read that. It was really a turn on “Troy.” I was disappointed in it. When you’re trying to figure things out in your career, you get a lot of advice. People are telling you that you should be doing this, and other people are saying you should be doing that. There was this defining film I never got to do, a Coen brothers film called “To the White Sea.” We had an opportunity to go, and then it was shut down. Then another interesting opportunity arose, and instead I was talked into: “No, you need to be doing this other thing. You can get to your art project later.” I ended up taking that advice.
>>220751742It means hes coked out when he was reading the script
>>220751591I like that it's the performances that bother him. Not the fact this his children hate him
>>220751757And you made “Troy”? No, it wasn’t “Troy,” it was another thing. But that really made me think, I’m following my gut from here on out. I had to do “Troy” because — I guess I can say all this now — I pulled out of another movie and then had to do something for the studio. So I was put in “Troy.” It wasn’t painful, but I realized that the way that movie was being told was not how I wanted it to be. I made my own mistakes in it. What am I trying to say about “Troy”? I could not get out of the middle of the frame. It was driving me crazy. I’d become spoiled working with David Fincher. It’s no slight on Wolfgang Petersen. “Das Boot” is one of the all-time great films. But somewhere in it, “Troy” became a commercial kind of thing. Every shot was like, Here’s the hero! There was no mystery. So about that time I made a decision that I was only going to invest in quality stories, for lack of a better term. It was a distinct shift that led to the next decade of films.
>>220751777Those 15 years include films like “12 Monkeys.” You got an Oscar nomination for that one. I nailed the first half of “12 Monkeys.” I got the second half all wrong. That performance bothered me because there was a trap in the writing. It’s not the writing’s fault, but it was something that I couldn’t figure out. I knew in the second half of the film I was playing the gimmick of what was real in the first half — until the last scene — and it bugged the [expletive] out of me.

He's talking shit because at the time of release Troy was perceived as being off the mark, not accurate and he was criticized for being a poor fit for Achilles. This was all over the media of the time. During that time historical epics like Gladiator, Braveheart, Patriot, Kingdom of Heaven were primarily criticized as to how "accurate" they are, which is something any shit critic could scoff at and come off as a snobby intellectual. It's easy talking points for a review.Troy came out at the ass end of that whole historical blockbuster genre (I think only KoH came after, and was also widely criticized), so people were not into it anymore. That's why Brad Pitt is talking shit about it, not because he "didn't get" the story or his character or "it wasn't right" or whatever. He'd be all hugs and kisses about it if it was a megahit, but it wasn't so he's bitter about it like a scorned woman.

Well, I'd take Waterloo over the retarded slop that was Napoleon any day of the week.>Troy came out at the ass end of that whole historical blockbuster genre (I think only KoH came after, and was also widely criticized), so people were not into it anymoreNo, it did fairly well, I think; it was just kind of meh, IMO mainly due to Benioff's shitty script (he's always been shit) and overuse of not-very-good CGI. And you make it sound like those films were all released in close succession - Braveheart was nine years earlier. Even Gladiator came out four years prior.>That's why Brad Pitt is talking shit about itMaybe. Or maybe because he (correctly) thinks it was shit. As did Peter O'Toole.>He'd be all hugs and kisses about it if it was a megahitAgain, it did reasonably well - if I had to guess, largely because Orlando Bloom was in it, fresh off LotR.

>>220751591I actually hate hearing the thoughts of actors on their roles but especially if its negative Just fucking act, monkey.
>>220753623I can understand it, he got nuancemogged hard by Eric Bana's Hector.
>>220753623Lack of subtlety isn't the problem. If anything you could argue they were trying to be too "subtle"/"realistic" by removing the gods entirely - instead of having them constantly bickering, narrating the action etc. No, it's more that it all kind of dissolves into a bland CGI soup. Besides "That's why no one will remember your name", there are (ironically) no memorable lines - a colossal waste of the assembled acting talent. (The one other meme it belatedly spawned was of Brian Cox pointing.) And it's not fun or particularly gripping, à la Gladiator or Braveheart.
>>220751591Writing complaints seem to be a common thing for that one. Here's Peter O'Toole shitting on Troy:>“Ugh, what a disaster. The director, that kraut, what a clown he was”.>“When it was all over, I watched 15 minutes of the finished movie and then walked out…At least I had one good scene”.
>>220753301Conveniently overlooking The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Big Short, Moneyball, Tree of Life, 12 Years a Slave, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Babel, etc

>>220751742The trap is he didn't play the character like he was innocent. It's supposed to be an "aha!" moment for the audience to realize Pitt's character was harmless and the clues were there all along.
>>220754315Kraut also isn't very high on the list of being offensive. It's an epithet about Germans being sauerkraut eaters. Food related slurs ain't shit. It's on the level of calling American's burgers.
He probably wanted Achilles to be portrayed as some looming inevitable force of fate just on the edge of the screen and not front and center in a superhero/supervillain kind of role.
Maybe he did read the Iliad and thought it was a bad adaptation.
>>220752578They don't want you to know this but the kids at LEGO land are free and you can take them home, I have 15 kids.
>>220751743He was saying the script for Troy was ass, not The Iliad itself, which is correct. It also downplayed how complex Achilles' character was in the story and how much his downfall mirrored a war veteran who saw his closest friend (Patroclus) dead from his actions and the anger that led him to perform an act of savageness against Hector and Troy.

The film was forgettable bland slop, and the script was the No 1 reason for that. Greater fidelity to Homer might have helped in that regard (and Terry Gilliam was right to view the removal of the gods as a bizarre choice), but theoretically you could have made an equally loose adaptation that was entertaining and memorable.

>>220762698then I am stupid because I watch it like once every 5 years. the extended is kino. the theatrical has certified epic music during certain scenes while the based extended replaced it with generic crap.Troy is awesome and every bitch leaves a wet chair after herself watching peak muscledaddy braddu pittuYes its an action flick not a greek epic. Troy. odyssey. illiad. all have the same problem of needing lot more than 90 minutes of runtime. Troy kept it action oriented. As an enjoyer of ancient greek literature and big stan of them I see no issues with Troy. If anything it made one thing excellently: It portrayed Achilles more than man. Big complains about Troy is keeping the Gods and mysticism out of it. Its lingering there and its a story grounded in reality, not in epic tales of forgotten times with gods and mystical creatures, same as today, but 3000 years earlier. In this world nobody has undeniable proof of the greater forces, same as ours, but then there is Braddu Pittu. Perfect portrayal of a demigod. He is obviously no ordinary man, their tales and stories of Gods must be true. Achilles is proof for the existence of Gods. Machismo movies, masculine, males are in the focus, creators, civilization builders, and flawed. Troy is an awesome movie and fuck you. (Hey Israel Im totally gay I love penis I am living a totally ordinary gay pedestrian life. That is all)

>>220753146a celeb or some rando?
>>220751777Always forget Troy was Wolfgang Petersen. Hollywood hates Das Boot, possibly the greatest kino ever made and The Neverending Story. Difficult to buy that Petersen's Troy sucked because of him but perhaps he faced the same dilemma as Pitt? Then again Petersen made Air Force One iirc, low frequency telegraphed Zio slop. The Coen brothers and Pitt are a bad match, he doesn't fit their goy caricature lens like Clooney, whose ego conditions him for it. Only Tarantino and Fincher now how to ideally shoot and write for Pitt, excluding Benjamin Button slop but including Scott's True Ronance, it's a shame he didn't work with them more and vice versa, if Weinstein hadn't fellated Tarantino into making IB a Zio fantasy, it would have been a top 10 white war kino as planned. It's why Tarantino couldn't shake Booth and had to write the prequelish book adaptation. Pitt's career is a sad case of America not being allowed to reach its potential after the 90s because Israel had "greater" plans.
>>220751837Not wrong. That movie was a He-Man cologne ad influenced by the Abercrombie gayified Nazi "inspired" ad campaigns of Leslie Wexner. Angelina Jolie was his Erika Kirk.

>>220758449He was only popular because women were attracted to him
>>220762902Most actors have terrible taste in movies. This isn't surprising at all.
>>220751591>Every shot was like, here’s the hero! There was no mystery.no way, really?
>>220768199Robert Plant had just survived a near fatal car crash and the drummer OD shortly after. It's a profound performance clown that mirrors the song's theme of mortality versus mythology
>>220751591Pitt really is just a pretty faced retard aura farming savant.
>>220751591>>220762902He's right. 2000s hollywood had lost the old mastery over storytelling and character. The more literal an adaptation is, the more confined it becomes to the well-known original, the more predictable and boring it becomes cinematically. Having no gods was an attempt to mitigate that and become a modern film, but the difference between Troy and what they should've done is the difference between Space Jam and a movie about Jordan winning six titles. Achilles is a great character but his story doesn't work if its just rote repetition of a plot everyone knows. It needed to be scripted and shot to show a different side of the Illiad for story reasons, not to be subversive.
>>220764700Its the only movie that comes to a plebs mind when thinking about movies about greek mythology
>>220751771Can’t really blame Pitt for disavowing his family. They’re all fucked. The Pax boy is clearly a faggot, and the other kids are Trans or some other degenerate shit. Angela did it all. What a cunt.

>>220751690It's overrated as shit
>>220755087But then playing him consistently would be the right thing to do. Why would you change the acting in the second half if the character doesnt change?
The real fault of Troy was the problem of Benioff's writing and Petersen's (traditional) kraut interpretation of the Mycenaeans as le bad. Visually and in most other respects the film is great as a spectacle and Brad's view on how it was shot is horseshit. It's totally ok that Achilles is viewed as a hero. It's ok the visual emphasis is put on him. He is objectively a hero. So is Hector. So is Ajax (both) and dozens others, even Priam and Nestor and all the olds. People who think this film should depict one side or the other as good or bad have a biased view of Homer and there's no point in making such a film in English that includes your ethnic spergery, whatever type it is, however far removed or not.
>>220771074>and there's no point in making such a film in Englishyou have to make the film in english. what third world language would you make it in instead? first worlders don't read subtitles
>>220770873That's the "trap" of the character. How do you give a single performance that makes sense before and after the twist and feels authentic to the audience that it could be both. That's a pretty complex and subtle thing that Pitt is mad he couldn't figure out how to do.
>>220771074The problem is not Achilles being a hero, but the plodding self-aware way it moves along, like a series of dioramas showing the legendary hero Achilles perform some heroic act. He doesn't get to be a real character and his book arc is truncated for being too gay. The whole thing is a simplified version of scenes from the Illiad that attempts to reproduce them semi-faithfully, it doesn't come across as an independent story. The line about remembering your name is nowhere near as bad as some I've heard like in Excalibur, but it's still self-aware and freezes everything in mythic time, the story never feels alive.
>>220753301>>F1: The MovieSurprisingly kino. >>220751591>I pulled out of another movie and then had to do something for the studio,’ he revealed. ‘So I was put in Troy.Fare enough, but what was the other movie?Given the approximate date of filming, it was something that lacked any real mystery about his character, and that it would have been something Warner Bros expected to do well, it was likely one of these films:>The Last Samurai (Nathan)>Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Sirius Black)>The Aviator (Howard Hughes)>The Phantom of the Opera (Raoul)Most likely is probably Phantom, I can picture him not being able to do the operatic singing well enough and pulling out for that reason, he would have to have been pretty desperate not to hurt his brand like that, so desperate he'd have agreed to Troy.

>>220751591Im just going to say it. Troy sucked and people only retroactively like it now because Nolans Odyssey movie is a woke propaganda trainwreck. Same thing happened with the Star Wars prequels. Also, zoomers are going back and watching older movies for the first time and noticing that even though the movies themselves might suck (they have zero taste so cant notice this anyway) the production value and craftmenship of movies from the 2000s is amazing because its not half baked CGI shit made by a farm of jeets.
