Why did people latch onto Taxi Driver and not Death Wish? Death Wish does everything better, better kill count, better kill conditions (Travis kills THREE people at the very end of the movie and dies in the process), WAY better soundtrack, better story, better protagonist. It is the superior 70s vigilante (Travis is a FAILED vigilante) movie, and is kino. King of Comedy is way better than Taxi Driver if you don't wanna pretend you didn't sit around waiting for him to start vigilante killing at night the whole movie and instead wanted a movie about a mentally ill Robert Deniro. The soundtrack is excellent too, genuinely masterful. It almost feels like Taxi Driver is pushed as an agenda to demoralise potential vigilantes. Hell, Taxi Driver isn't even a /tv/movie, I'm not even sure if its on the list (I will check), but you're better off just watching Leon. I will never stop saying Taxi Driver is a garbage piece of shit movie, and I will never understand the acclaim it gets.
>>
TD is nihilistic. DW is life-affirming.
>>
>>220756405
Because Taxi Driver is obviously a much better filmed movie. And I say that as someone that prefers Charles Bronson to Robert DeNiro.
>>
>>220756405
The wave of sequels probably damaged its reputation.

michael winner was a mid director for hire, and he was br*tish too, they have a weird TV movie quality to their directing.
death wish was a complete fluke because death wish 2/3 look a lot shittier, and it's not even an amazingly directed movie. 70s new york was just able to produce instant cinema. right time and right place.
>>
>>220756405
death wish is undoubtedly more fun, but taxi driver has those kino scenes of him just driving around dingy 70s new york with that jazz sax playing. i care less about the last half of the movie where the plot picks up, but the first half is comfy as fuck
>>
>>220756405
The Mechanic is the superior Bronson-kino, it mogs both of these
>>
>>220756405
Horrendous take, Winner is not even 1/10th the director Scorsese is and Taxi Driver is so much more interesting and has much more to say than being a boilerplate action flick. Death Wish is enjoyable solely on the strength of shithole 70's NY vibes and being a rare pro-gun film, but it's technical aspects are objectively mediocre. Very plain shot composition, staging and lighting and wooden performances all around.
Also Ms .45 turbomogs Death Wish at it's own game.
>>
>>220756405
>braindead contrarian take of the day
yawn
>>
>>220756405
Taxi Driver has more atmosphere, existential angst and a more compelling central character. Death Wish is great but it's basically a straight revenge story.
>>
>>220756405
It's not as good. I love it but Winner and Scorsese are not really comparable.

Second time I've seen Ms 45 mentioned tonight, shame this girl died so young. Real cool flick.
>>

She was extremely talented (she helped write this movie and Bad Lieutenant) and imo a very beautiful and expressive face that was made for cinema. Utterly brilliant performance considering that this was her first film and the part is essentially non verbal which is very difficult to pull off even for experienced actors. Such a tragic waste.

Real shame, too many talented artists die from drugs.

DW>TD for me. Also Freak #1 is Jeff Goldblum’s film debut. Comic legend Gary Conway said Paul Kersey was a big inspiration for Marvel’s Punisher

Nah, they're self contained shock but it's fun. 2 is extremely brutal.
>>
>>220757273
Sad she died. I love Ms. 45, at first it's like "oh she's going after men who want to hurt people, classic vigilante" then it dawns on you "oh she's a misandrist psycho"
>>
>>220756405
Taxi Driver is a brilliant character study. Death Wish is racist right wing propaganda for chuds.

Be sure to read the books, too.
Despite Death Sentence being supposedly made as a condemnation of Bronson's Paul being portrayed too positively, I didn't think the book treated the character in an unfair manner. It's definitely not a Joker 2.

Hot take: the Bruce Willis remake is alright. It definitely isn't the original or even 2 or 3, but it's still entertaining. Just a good old fashioned middle-aged man killing pieces of shit flick.
It was probably the last time Bruce Willis was coherent in a film too.
>>
>>220756405
because Bickle is an austic loser with no real friends or family and a shitty job and delusions of grandeur, so he's more "relatable" to disaffected young men.

Death Wish and Taxi Driver are different movies.

Death Wish is a vigilante film with a classic hero. Paul suffers loss, gets a clear motivation, a clear target, and executes competently.

Taxi Driver is an anti-vigilante film that is more of a character study of isolation.

Its essentially righteous fury vs. depressing reality
>>
>>220757053
70s is peak Bronson. I wish he had a bigger career when he was younger.
>>
>>220756405
Half of The King of Comedy is some annoying, shrill cunt overacting and writhing all over a chairbound Jerry Lewis. Nobody ever mentions that or how much screentime it takes up.
>>
One of the things that is missed is that Paul is an architect. He is a builder and contributor to society. Its a very old story, a builder being forced to protect the things that he builds. Very compelling.

Thats why I like DW > TD
>agency, competence, and a man standing up for what’s right
vs
>alienation, rot, and the tragedy of human isolation
>>
>>220756405
Thread makes a good case for Death Wish. I'll have to watch it.
>>
>>220756405
Taxi Driver is like a classic novel on the screen. Death wish is just schlock entertainment like the movie falling down, Leon or Joker. Taxi Driver is riddled with symbolism, has a top tier mixed up and insane soundtrack by peak Bernard Herman, peak De niro, peak Scorsese, cool cinematography, and it tackles some of the most uncomfortable realities about modern American life, like racial tension, cultural changes, alienation, paranoia. The whole film is meant to make you feel sickly and sleazy, it's like a fever dream. Paul Schrader wrote Taxi Driver from his own lived experience, it's not 'meant to demoralize' or 'moralize' it's just an interesting film noir character study. Honestly, this feels like the last real film noir film ever made imo.

Coming back to my thread to say all of you have only further reinforced my views on taxi driver. it is a definitive midwit movie, and Death Wish sits at both ends of the bell curve. There is no point watching a film just for the visuals and feel alone, there are so many more components that go into it, and the feel you get from Death Wish is much more visceral. Especially in the world we live in now where criminals get a slap on the wrist. I will keep loving Death Wish. https://youtu.be/NvYLTaRMpDQ
>>
>>220762734
Yah, Death Wish is truly an "end of the bell curve" film.

If I'm not mistaken, Bronson literally went up to her husband and pretty much said, "I'm going to fuck your bitch," then he did.

Is there an actual name for the sensation a person gets when they see the movie/show where a meme comes from?

That's the name, I think.

>everyone itt saying death wish is a "revenge" movie
I mean technically it is, but its very deliberate that he never finds the guys who actually wronged him and his family.
