The problem with Mary Sue writing isn't the fact that it's a competent woman with a lot of skills. The original Star Trek fanfic from which the term comes was written by a woman who wrote her own self insert to be this comically competent woman who is instantly extremely close friends with the entire main cast. Basically the problem is that it's blunt and obvious fem-gooner tier writing.

Mary Sue was competent at everything and immediately became close friends with Kirk, Spock, and Bones, and the whole fanfiction revolved around Mary Sue solving every problem and basically being the uncontested hero of the story.This was bad writing because it's only really interesting to the woman who wrote it, who wanted to imagine herself in a relationship with all the main Star Trek characters. It's not necessarily about putting down the old characters, it's just unskilled and frankly autistic writing from a female perspective. Unfortunate that this type of writing ended up in scripts for the Star Wars movies, but it's not something to seethe about.

No one here has mentioned that SW: M&G is based on a TV show that less than half the US has access to. That figure is even lower in other countries. So the Disney execs intentionally released a movie that over half of the country feels out of the loop on. SW:NJO will not have that same problem. But it will still have the problem where people are burned out on SW and do not trust Disney to make anything good.
