You know what I hate about the legend of the 300? It's Spartan wank. Athens did far more to defeat Persia than Sparta ever did. It was the Athenian fleet that turned back Xerxes from Greek shores. It was Themistocles that decieved the Persian fleet into splitting itself so that it could be defeated, it was Themistocles that tricked Xerxes into fleeing. Athens had to burn to the ground twice, and had to threaten Sparta with surrendering it's fleet to Persia before those red cloaked fucks finally marched out of their walls.>muh Sparta had no wallsOk, but they put one massive wall to cover the isthmus that seperated Spartan lands from the rest of Greece.That's not to say that the 300 Spartans (and their free Greek allies, Perioikoi and Helot slaves) were not cool. These guys were still the best warriors in history. And it was the Spartans that carried the final battle against the Persians when they finally marched out their forced en masse, that is only alluded to at the end of 300. There's multiple examples of Spartan formations just walking through Persian hoardes like a knife through butter (look up Xenophon and the long march). In any case, Spartans had to be tough fuckers to keep a slave population 10x their population under the heel. And I can't think of any better historical warriors. Mongols were pretty fierce but foot soldiers vs horse riders isn't really a fair comparison.
