Instead of exploring what happens after the fall of the Empire, JJ Abrams made the sequel trilogy re-boot the same story from A New Hope, effectively destroying story potential for cynical fanservice. The prequels and Last Jedi have a ton of problems, but at least they are trying to do new things, TFA and ROS are utterly cynical retreads.The historian guy on John Stewart's podcast last year had a much better idea of showing the huge difficulties in rebuilding the Republic.
