okay but the process of how those two learned to communicate was completely brushed off by the movie because it's just not possible. Two individuals with different languages where none can speak the other's language will never be able to to communicate properly. Hand gestures can only get you so much.

I watched Project Hail Mary with an open mind. I didn't know what to expect. I turned out to be very reddit. Very, very reddit. The first 45 minutes were so loaded with cringe. It's as though someone took the writers from Mass Effect Andromeda and asked them to write the characters in PHM. Ryland Grace, Eva Stratt, and Carl are all imbeciles, and every character is juvenile.

So Grace will spend the rest of his life in that zoo that the alien crabs built for him, teaching to alien crab children, never having sex again, never having children, never seeing his family again, never seeing a human again... only alien crabs until he dies. I think at first he could thought that was interesting and fun but after a few years he must have gotten pretty depressed.

Wait, couldn't the alien crabs built a spaceship and send him back to Earth?

>>
>>220794866
Grace was an aryan ubermensch held back by a world that did not appreciate his genius and only wanted to exploit him and send him to die.
He met the alien in another star system, not invading his country, the aliens were intelligent scientists who gave him a house and an island and invited him to teach their own children because he's so smart and probably let him fuck their women if it's possible.
It's peak White Man fiction, the opposite to woke in every way. If wokies understood the subtext they would commit suicide for enjoying it.

I was really digging this movie until the reddit alien showed up
>>
>>220794990
Rocky told him they fixed his ship and he didn't have a reason to leave, he had no family. His life was forfeit just by being sent on the mission then he chose to sacrifice himself to save Erid, he already made his choice.
In the book it's made clearer that the time it took just to get there and have them build him a habitat took years and he is too old to leave anyway.
>>
>>220795012
Apparently it took many years until the eridians could make for him (I guess he lived with what some food from his spaceship he had left) and by that point he was too old to make the journey back. Also because he didn't have a good memory of Earth because he was forced to do the mission and in Erid he was a living legend.

Humans interact with radiation in so many ways that are necessary for a spacecraft to work at all.

In the book, it's indicated he can leave whenever he wants. But the fact is that he's human and realized that he was so old and estranged from anything going on with earth that he didn't really have the drive to return. He'd be roughly 80 by the time he made it back, and got more satisfaction out of teaching aliens about the laws of relativity.
>>
>>220795285

it is a little silly from our scientific perspective, but it's certainly not impossible. They might look at human scince in a similar way, and say "lol, how the fuck did these retarded monkeys even get off their own planet without understanding how to convert a noble gas into a solid metal. This shit is literally the foundation for basic construction, and we interact with it in literally every part of modern society"

>for a supposedly interstellar civilization
Eridians weren't interstellar until just now, same as humans, because the astrophage gave them the same fuel breakthrough and incentive to make such a ship. In the book it's explained that their unawareness of relativity is why Rocky had extra fuel to give Grace- time dilation gave Rocky a shorter trip than expected.

For it to really make sense though, Eridians must never have put any satellites with precise clocks in their planet's orbit, which is a bit implausible

Yes and they're steam powered.

>>220796800
He was clearly not that old in the movie, and I'm pretty sure the Hail Mary could make the voyage in 3-6 years easily. Or for that matter, Earth could have built another spacecraft to visit Eridani on a scientific/diplomatic mission by this point. (not sure exactly how far Eradani is from Tau Ceti or Earth). And as much as he loves teaching the rock crabs about science, he would probably have just as much that he could teach humans about the rock crabs.

He wasn't old physically because he spent like what, 12 years in cryo sleep, plus how many more to reach Rockys planet, plus eventually that combined again on the way back to earth, and while he still might be in his 40s-50s back home, everyone he knew would be dead and the world completely different. Plus, earth is probably a giga shithole for the next century while recovering from almost apocalypse, so he's way better just chilling with his bro in the comfy biodome

>Plus, earth is probably a giga shithole for the next century while recovering from almost apocalypse, so he's way better just chilling with his bro in the comfy biodome
I mean, you're not entirely wrong. But I feel like if he returned to earth, he would never have to deal with the hellscape that the rest of society lives with. He would be revered and respected back on earth, as the savior of the planet, just as much as he is revered and respected on Erid, as the savior of their planet. He would probably get much of the same treatment. he could live like a king anywhere he wanted, and he would never want for anything, since most of the population of earth would bend over backwards to thank him. It just seems to me like both options are equally good for him. But at the end of the day, it's just a personal decision, so whatever

Stripping away all the scifi elements and still having a good story is literally what separates good scifi from slop scifi. And here's a hot take: if this was the same story if it was set in the age of sailing, it would still functionally be a scifi. They just trade out science like astrophysics for more down to earth sciences, like oceanography. insead of computers, it's sextants and astrolabes. Instead of micro biology being the key, it would just be regular biology. There was a FUCK ton of science involved in circumnavigating the globe after all. Lots of specialized instruments. lots of classified information

>>220797569
Good scifi is integral to the story. Yes you need character development. But if the character development isnt tied with scifi it's barely scifi. Babylon 5 is good scifi because inextricably part of the story. It wouldnt work without the alien and space elements whatsoever.
>>
>>220794990
Grace hadn't really been treated well on earth. All his hard work got dumpstered on and when he finally made a difference, they shipped him off to die in a cold void. Teaching kids was the only satisfaction he really got and that was taken from him. For the eridians, though, he was simultaneously being exposed to a constant barrage of new science information while being the leading expert on multiple scientific fronts in his own right.
On earth, he was a hero. On Eridan, he was a messiah.
>>
>>220788014
nouns wouldn't be much of a problem but unless their grammar system was basically identical they really couldn't learn to communicate at the level seen in the movie

you have to be some sort of unironic giga-monk to think that his fate isn't horrific. imagine never being able to touch someone a again, to be in the same room with someone without them wearing a VAC suit. to be forever trapped in a bubble artificial reality surrounded by endless darkness. with nobody to interact with except insane aliens who communicate by blowing flutes.
that it's played off as some sort of happy outcome for him is kind of deranged. it's so tone-deaf it's almost like it was written by an alien.
>>
>>220797811
To be fair, he wasn't particularly remarkable anyway. He's whole "theory" that attracted the glowie's attention in the first place turned out completely wrong and irrelevant. He was just lucky/unlucky to be the at the right place and time, he was basically just a regular dude
>>
>>220797777
>I doubt anyone on earth will know hes a hero even if he comes back
In the book, Eva Stratt says in no uncertain terms that she expected to be court martialed and possibly executed for the stunts she pulled.
While a lot of what they did was considered top secret, it was with the recognition that after everything was said and done that it would all come to light, and that Grace would be celebrated as a hero for his unwilling sacrifice.
>>
>>220797846
But that's not his fate. He could literally fuck off back to earth at any point that's the point. He seems to be enjoying his life tho, so all your points are moot
>>
>>220797846
>you have to be some sort of unironic giga-monk
Nope, just white.
>>
>>220797859
Grace's advantage was that he was well rounded and despite not being a leading expert in anything, he was still expert in biology in particular and exceptional in both chemistry and physics. He was lucky but far from being a regular dude which was a big part of why Eva kept him and why he got along with the actual leading experts far more than her.
>>
>>220797777
CHECK'D, and also, yeah. If you look at how common leakers are within a single government, the idea that no one in their 20+ government super project would leak what they know is literally impossible. In fact, over the course of the 30 year projection they were talking about as a doomsday scenario, some armature astronomer would have recognized the pattern in ever other star, and discovered that Tau Ceti was immune. And there would be a grass roots conspiracy theory community about why the governments of the world are not acknowledging them and doing something with that info. I understand why the governments of the world would not want to say "We did a thing, and we expect the problem to be solved by this point in time". But eventually, they are going to have to say "we did a thing"

>>220798114
In the book, one of the things they left out was that in order to create more astrophage, they effectively turned the entire saharan desert into asphalt both to speed up the production and then raise the earths temperature by at least a couple of degrees. Grace wasn't something they could keep secret, especially after the Beatle probes made it back.
>>
>>220797859
>he wasn't particularly remarkable anyway
Bull fucking shit lmao. Haven't seen the movie but in the book he's a certifiable genius. He's officially a PhD in molecular biology but more than he saves his own and Rocky's ass dozens of times with his """""""general"""""" scientific knowledge and wide variety of practical handiwork skills.
>>
>>220798134
The rock people weren't actually rocks. They were still carbon based and supposedly some far off panspermia that eventually led to the rise of both the astrophage and humanity as well.
>>
>>220798210
That's dumb, my headcanon is better.
>>

Astrophage as a whole is dumb, if you're going to accept the core concept of the book for as silly as it is then you've gotta accept that whatever spores survived through space to make it to earth were at least durable enough to seed other planets that were also extreme environments.
It's also worth mentioning that Grace still isn't wrong, just that if that life exists then neither humans nor eridians have found it yet. It's only that the astrophage predecessor was still really good at what it did

Funny, I only just watched this yesterday and loved it. I see the discussion around here is pretty cursed though.

if i was him id had not sent the w/e thingy back to pwnd humanity for having sent me against my will
>>
>>220798471
To be fair, they probably wouldn't have sent you then. Grace was a self-righteous coward, not a vengeful one. If he didn't care about seeing his old students survive, they wouldn't have sent him either.

The characters in Project Hail Mary come across as typically unserious high school kids being tasked with the need to solve an existential crisis while lacking the emotional IQ to grasp the urgency of the situation at large

It's like watching two hours of "Welp, I guess I'm going to have to science the shit out of this" on repeat.

>>Don't understand radiation
Because their planet has a thick atmosphere and massive magnet field protecting them plus Eridians can't see light and radiation is a light wave. From their perspective space was emty except for stars and planets, they didn't even know about relativity, which is the actually retarded part.

>>220792777
very obvious product placement. This is the only candy that they show the name/logo for. But we never see Grace actually eating skittles. He does eat red twizzlers in several other scenes, bu Twizzlers didn't pay the product placement fee, so it's just generic red licorice. I want to call out renolds aluminum foil for this same montage, but I legit think they are the only company that makes aluminum foil. So they have to use the exact packaging if they want people to recognize it

Non whites will never understand the fruits of exploration is discovering new horizons and the desire to carve out a new home among the stars, not the izzat waiting when you get back. You've also never made a friend in your life.

Have you looked at most governments in the world? Elections are basically high school prom king/queen voting. It's just a bunch of retards in suits instead of dresses and tuxedos.

Sure it is, for a low-IQ manbabby redditor such as yourself. I know quite a few like you. In their mid 30's to mid 40's, still playing video games, still dressing like you are in high school with your thong sandals, cargo shorts, and cheap t-shirt with a star wars or marvel character on it, still using the word "cool" to describe things you like as in "that's so cool". Surely you said "that's so cool" when you heard the phrase "science the shit out of this", and of course you think PHM is "so cool".

The rest of the world laughs at you and knows crap like PHM is designed to appeal to the very many manbabbys such as yourself. There is nothing kino about PHM, and the fact that movies are intentionally made childish in order appeal to people like you is a very, very sad commentary.

Nah. They've got DNA.
They really heavily on silicates for their body and brain structure as I recall though, using crystaline intermediates created by their cells instead of actual neurons.

I have now sat to watch Project Hail Mary three times, each in thirty or so minute chunks. I just can't stand the redditness of it for more than thirty minutes at a time. I will get through it but this is a movie written by either a really smart adolescent or a really dumb adult.

>>
>>220788014
Lol, we have several real life stories of spaniards getting wrecked on the coast of south america and learning the language while being used a slave by the south american tribes.
No books or anything to help them learn it, just a good beating to keep them working.
And spanish and south american were complete seperate languages, nothing in those remotely is the same.
