I am convinced the Alien prequels are just Ridley Scott having a huge homo lust for blonde haired blue eyed men. This still shot is a direct homage to Böcklin's Isle of the Dead. The significance of this (series of) painting(s) is that it was Giger-ized by Giger right around the point that he was "discovered" and contracted to work on Alien, so when Giger came up with the Derelict concept (and the away team's journey into it), what you're seeing is three people (one of whom is already as good as dead) traveling toward the back of this U-shape thing, which is just what you have in the painting.

The story is already removing God from creating humans, there's no reason the actual creators of humanity couldn't be the ones guiding Jesus as well. And the background story is that the original engineers, each living half a million years of more, long ago lost their ability to biologically reproduce. So they create worlds, many of which DO NOT succeed and have to be abandoned or culled. The ones that work out, create lifeforms that are in the image of the engineers and they shepherd them. The ultimate goal is to create certain females with specific traits they use the goo on to create new engineer life. The goo is not one uniform thing. It has multiple distinct abilities depending on what you're doing which is why it seems to react differently in every scene. The human world was a failure and they were going to cull it. The next world Shaw went to was one of their successful worlds. The space jockey engineer was also part of the religious extremists and not the more central, tolerant engineers. They are not a hivemind.
