Metallica masterfully coasted off of Mustaine, Burton, and cocaine for their first 4 albums. When the black album came out, Lars realized he could make 10x the money with 1/4 of the effort, which explains his drumming performance since the 90s. James alone wasn't enough to offset the trend-chasing that Lars and Kirk wanted to pursue during that era, and Jason's talents were wasted for most of the time he was in the band. By the time they decided to make thrash metal again, it was too late.

Drugs, fame and fortune engendering complacency, burnout, industry-mandated trend-chasing, ennui etc. Making music, especially in a certain type of genre, requires a certain type of passion, and it's rare that anyone keeps a passion going forever.It is really kind of a head-scratcher just how shitty Metallica's music became after the Black Album though. Even stripped down just to the lyrical content, it's like Hetfield's brain was mangled.
