>amazing performances, basically the career-best performances from every lead actor involved (gosling, cooper, mendes - especially mendes, damn)>unique and bold way of storyelling: three different stories with different characters and storylines spanning decades, genuinely shocking twists and plot turns that subvert expectations in a smart way>doesn't rely on action - only major scene of violence is brief and quick, but has huge consequences for every character for the rest of the movie>ultra-realistic filmmaking style, feels like you're actually there with these characters in every scene, very immersive, i actually felt like i was watching real people talk, especially act 1 between gosling and mendes, felt like real people (not surprised they got married because of this movie)>deep themes about fatherhood and masculinity in a very mature and intelligent way, not woke or judgemental in the slightest>act 1 is pretty much the most perfect segment of any film i've ever seen in my life, while it is essential for the rest of the film, it also works as a stand-alone short-film (anyone that's seen it knows what i mean)>amazing music, cinematography, camerawork, direction, lighting, etc. Basically just a gorgeous film in every regard, a perfect synthesis between arthouse and mainstreamGenuinely shocked at how underrated this film is. I legit think it's one of the best films ever made, and I can't believe how overlooked it is. Most people don't even rate it as one of the best films of 2012. Insane.
But it has good ratings
>>220824431i watched it because I saw it advertised with suicides ghost rider as the background music, i wasn't disappointed, it's a great film, most of the criticism I've seen is aimed at the 3rd act but i liked the whole thing
>>220824431As you say, Act 1 is phenomenal. It was also what the marketing of the film revolved around back when it came out. The result of this is that people went to see the movie, were impressed at the start where they got exactly what they wanted, only for the movie to become something completely different and also get significantly worse. By the end, people are left with this impression: >this movie was bad and disappointing and it's not what I wantedIf you went to a high advertised burger joint and they served you the hamburger you ordered and it was the best burger you ever had, and then after two bites the staff would take away the burger and give you an alright pizza, you probably wouldn't recommend that place.
>>220824546After Gooses death in the first Act I was both surprised and curious about how the plot would progress. It was different for sure, but I wouldn't call it disappointing.
>>220824546I get what you're saying but even though Act 1 is very obviously the best part of the film by a huge margin, the rest is still really damn good and if it was in a different film would have been praised enormously. In a way I feel like Act 1 being so loved is also part of the point: just like Eva Mendes and Dane DeHaan's characters, we look back at this part of the story fondly as being the most dramatic and romantic and powerful, and it affects how we see the rest of the story, and we wish things could go back to how they were. The film is very heavily based on peoples' memories and perceptions about how much better life was and could have been. But Acts 2 and 3 are damn good in their own right and realistically, the film couldn't have kept going with the same story in Act 1 the whole time - what else could they do?SPOILER!!!Gosling's character had already fucked up by attacking Mendes' boyfriend and she rejected him and said she wanted nothing to do with him, and he'd never see his baby again. He was reckless and suicidal, and burnt all his bridges. What else could happen? It was extremely realistic, and the fact that the film showed the long-term consequences of it is amazing and I love it so much for that, it feels so true to life. Showing how it affects the family, friends and everyone else afterwards. Very few films do this.
Same director as Blue Valentine. But tPBtP was weaksauce. Strong Act 1 but the rest of the film couldn't carry it.Both movies deserve at least cult status, but not much beyond that.
Plebs get filtered by act 2 and 3. They thought they would get a Gosling stoic hero robber man picture but he dies 40 minutes in. Also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pGFvJIH1jg this is the best scene in the movie and some of the best acting of all time by Bruce Greenwood in my opinion. Bradley Cooper great too.
>>220824431Because it's slop.
>>220825925The way Greenwood acts is fucking spot-on to law enforcement, especially higher-ups. I'm a lawyer and it legit is one of the best and most accurate depictions of a cop I've ever seen. You're right that it's a fantastic performance. Like I said in my earlier comments, the performances are just so fucking REAL.What I do love about this scene is how incredibly subtle the point of it is: that Greenwood is NOT corrupt and was a hard-ass and stickler for the rules and honesty, which is what makes Cooper come to him to snitch on the corrupt cops later when he has no other options.
>>220824431Would have been kino but a fuckwitted extra ruined the first scene. Disgraceful!
>>220824431Only the first story is good.
>>220824431jason and lucia in gta 6
>>220824431It’s good but there are some writing and dialogue issues that really make it lame. “Ride like lightning, crash like thunder” is like a 12 year old trying to be poetic and deep. Ray Liotta’s character kind of sucks and the dirty cop dialogue is very generic. AJ has a dumbass accent that is grating on the ears and sounds very forced. Maybe some people talk like that sure, but if I ever met them I’d get as far away as possible very quick so I didn’t have to hear that dogshit. The direction, cinematography, lighting etc are all good and serviceable but there isn’t really anything that fully elevates it or makes it stand out apart from other good movies at the time. All in all it’s good, a solid 3.5 stars but it’s definitely flawed and I wouldn’t say it’s underrated at all.
>>220824431The sum isn't greater than the parts. BCoop looks like an actor not a cop, the same for almost everyone else. It's watchable but feels contrived.
>>220826078LOL probably why the Fassbender/Vikander thing flopped too
>>220824431the relationship between the kids should have been more explored If director was actually committed to the film he would have made the main focus of the film actually make an epicIt just felt like a cheap plot twist
>>220826088Bradley Cooper's character in the film is a DA's son who wants to become Attorney General and does this beat cop gig as a way to gain a common man background for his future political career, the fact that he doesn't look like a cop but an actor is by design.
>>220826153Very good pointCooper's entire character is full of shit and just larping. He insists he is just an honest, simple cop but IMMEDIATELY starts pushing for publicity and fame to advance his career, which his judge dad amusingly points out.The way the director went above and beyond to make every single other character look EXACTLY like how their characters shouls realistically look, even famous actors like Gosling and Mendes, makes it seem very unlikely he'd intentionally leave Cooper looking pretty and clean for no reason. Yes, it was intentional, as you explain.
>>220826078>Ride like lightning, crash like thunderIs hella fucking cool you fucking retard. I'm getting it as a tattoo, it's gonna be SWEET.
>>220824571>>220825925Thanks for spoiling it>>220825964Wow that's so helpful and insightful
>>220826197In the scene with Greenwood you can see he instantly gets pissy and passive aggressive when he realizes Greenwood doesn't just blindly buy his story. He's not an evil villain but he's clearly a careerist and a schemer. Everything he does is to further his career, which leaves him hollow and this imprints on his son who is left unable to relate to him. I like the last scene of them when Bradley Cooper wins the elections and gives his speech and his son is standing behind him and just seeing him from behind instead of standing next to him. It's really good filmmaking in my opinion.
Always thought it was weird that Robin spoke so highly of Luke to his son when Luke treated him like shit.
>>220826318He was a really affable guy and seemed to have some understanding from where Luke was coming from that made it possible for him to overlook this. It might also be nostalgia. Some people just forgive and forget.
It's in fact not underrated.>The film received positive reviews from critics and was a modest box office success, grossing $47.1 million against its $15 million production budget. Gosling was nominated for the Satellite Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 18th Satellite Awards and the film was nominated for the inaugural Saturn Award for Best Thriller Film at the 40th Saturn Awards.>iMDB: 7.3/10>RT: 79%>Letterboxd: 3.8/5It's a very well-known and well-received film, you're just a narcissist who's angry that everyone in the world isn't celebrating his good taste*. What's more is it isn't a good film anyway, it's just another white liberal Hollywood romanticization of the working class criminal.>**Tell me you're an American Millennial without telling me you're an American Millennial by wanting to become notable for his consumption habits.
>>220826140Don't post about me or my latina wife's white son on this board ever again
>>220824431First half of the movie is really good.Second half sucks ass.
>>22082443110/10 first act. Mediocre second act.
>>220827105>half latina>whiteTry again
>>220826318Yeah but keep in mind that Robin was a complete loner and had NO ONE in his life. People like that tend to form toxic and unhealthy relationships with anyone that gives them some companionship however bad they are. This is actully one of the most realistic parts of the movie.
This is the one Goose movie I can't get people to watch for some reason. Maybe the energy is too somber. It's a good movie in any case.
People get filtered by the 3rd actSimple as
