>>
>>220830093
It's not a metaphor for mental illness, it's not really a metaphor at all. The Backrooms are, if anything, a physical version of a collective unconscious.
>>
>>220829259
i haven't seen it but i imagine
>shitty banal backstory of the characters in the first 15 minutes and some slightly humorous banter
>enter the backrooms
>"what the hell is this place?"
>"do you remember which way we came from?"
>"omg what was that noise"
>backrooms liminal horror and jumpsacres intensifies for an hour plus
>final boss climax and characters explaining "what the movie was about"
>at the end they leave the backrooms or not
>>
>>220830253
You are totally, hilariously wrong
>>
>>220829733
It's actually about blackcel rage
>>
>>220830214
It's like an AI generated version of the real world using unconcious memories and mental images as training data. Which is why the monsters are only dangerous because people imagine they are dangerous, and the captain only starts eating people because the therapist sees the MC grab a chunk out of a person and say you can eat them
>>
>>220829259
A WHITE WOMEN CALLED A BLACK AFRO AMERICAN A LOSER

THIS SHOULD BE BANNED
>>
So why was Captain Clark so violent when the other backrooms copies where just existing peacefully? Was it cause Clarks prone to violence?

Would make sense if the existence of the Backrooms implies reality is some kind of digital construct. God working like an LLM is a funny concept actually.
>>
>>220831001
it was from an arg from some creepypasta website.
>>

Millenials came up with the idea. It's entirely based on millenial unease with sterile office environment. KYS

>>
>>220829259
I kinda want to see this just to dab on Mandingo and Grunk
>>
>>220830999
Captain Clark is Clark's anger and resentment personified, since the Backrooms only operates in physical reality, not mental shenanigans. Instead of driving him insane and violent a la the Overlook in the Shining, it just spawns physical manifestations of his thoughts.
>>
>>220830999
Because everyone just views him as a larger than life doofy pirate on TV, but his therapist views him as a dangerous lunatic and literally sees him saying he eats people now. Since the backroom uses people's impressions to reflect the real world, her impression of him changed the captain monster
>>
>>220829259
>movie about a massive loser that loses his mind from being cucked by everyone else in his life
No wonder zoomers love it, they're actually living it.
>>
>>220829259
Nice try "Kane". Your jew daddies funded flick is gay and DEI. Flop
>>
>>220831001
Yeah, it started off on /x/ with just the photo saying "post photos of places that feel weird and uncomfortable" and then a little while later someone replied with what would become the concept for Backrooms.
>>
>>220830214
"if anything"? if they are anything? what did the zoom mean by this
>>

>>
simultaneously, the best part of the movie was the set design, but the worst, was seeing the characters exploring them, there was no good translation to a filmmaking language. The way the rooms were designed deserved more experimental and weird camera angles, in the movie it feels very repetitive. Even markiplier understood that while making iron lung
>>
>>220830046
So that’s ok that she sucked his tiny black clitty

We already know that hostile entities exist in the Backrooms. It was either a different entity, or it's possible that, like the rooms themselves, it's the same entity as Cap'n Clark but it used to look like something else until he entered the Backrooms and it changed to fit this new data.

it's extremely visually strong, the best moments in the film was when they were just showing you all the different environments. Reminded me of source games.
The soundtrack was great, too.
the plot was wholly unremarkable, but they didn't over-explain and scientifically pull it's pants down which I give it credit for.

It's literally one of the videos in the playlist. The company who discovers the portal to the backrooms (and accidentally opens up the rifts all over the world as a consequence) at one point considers utilizing the backrooms for commercial use such as infinite storage, infinite housing they can rent out to people, rooms they can have businesses and restaurants in.

I defended this movie before it came out because
I really like Kanes youtube series but I really did not like this movie. 6/10.

Hates the pacing. So much filler. Not scary at all. Any of Kanes youtube videos are better. I wish it was just focused on the scientists and the corporation. Really didn't connect with any of the characters. Jumbled mess.

Yes, there's absolutely nothing about corporate greed in the original concept. It's just being trapped in an endless maze of slightly unnatural rooms, and to cater to the attention span of zoomers they added entities. It's just how they destroyed the SCP concept as well by injecting politics out of nowhere. What became just regular exploration of an unknown area became OMG the greedy corporations are sending people to their death and don't care about their workers out of nowhere.

Same. I was hoping for it to be like the YT series but done properly and fleshed out, instead we got this cliche shit just taking place in the backrooms. I think he said the two aren't canon with each other so that should mean the YT series won't get shit up by it.

>>
>>220833395
It's not that the trauma drags you in - it just replicates whatever has been in there so for both main characters their past has been replicated but it's not something that draws them in exactly. clark just feels at home because he can't function in the outside world and in the backrooms he sorta finds refuge from his real life falling apart. his mural also might mean he's feeling like a creator himself as he was a failed architecht and the backrooms building upon his own life is like some form of control for him. He has aspects of the house he lost to his ex-wife which he constantly brings up. That likely comforts him. For his therapist dealing with clark helps her to realize her own path in life as a therapist was her own way of dealing with her personal trauma of trying to save her past self. She realizes this at the dinner table scene dealing with crazy clark. Her using part of the concrete from her driveway, the bit with her handprint, to smash the monster and it breaks is sorta a physical representation of her letting go of the past I think.

They made this whole movie for the sake of having the girl be the main one in the sequel who will accidentally go deeper in than ever before as part of the team if not be forced into the backrooms as a form of execution.
We might seem more of the crazy shit then but still nothing like the fun room type imagery that redditors are used to

No its just entities created by memory, in this case of clark when he was doing the commercial bit, dressed up as a pirate im guessing.
Maybe the entrance to the backrooms being right below his business he's owned for years and therefore in close proximity to him and/or him being in the backrooms made 'his' entity more lively/look like him more.
We even get to see Mary's at the end.

i agree that captain clark’s design would’ve benefitted from the face being obscured most of the time. it’s not even that the face isn’t unsettling, i just think that leaving it up to interpretation does a lot more for the audience. having the full face in view just for short far-away shots would’ve been better. having these up close moments kinda kill the mystique.
>>
>>220833732
Clark's dream failing is clearly not his fault, but the blame lies on him for not seeking deeper why he couldn't end up doing what he wanted, which also ties to how his life fell apart
His minotaur ate him alive because he got weak enough to stop fighting, I view it as clear-cut suicide
Mary didn't let go of the past by simply breaking the concrete souvenir as the backrooms kept a part of her
Phil has a seemingly functioning life but got into the backrooms, somehow managed to get outside but still works towards finding out about the collective unconscious that metaphysically manifested itself into the real world

Was disappointed and not really impressed by it, unfortunately. When you're a young director and have one shot at making a mainstream Hollywood hit, you have to make it a crowd-pleaser. You have to prove the new generation of filmmaking will keep audiences enticed and in the theater. Instead it was just obtuse bullshit that made everyone in the theater confused. They came for backrooms shenanigans, not some psychological thriller with therapy scenes and many unanswered questions. These young directors are way too full of themselves. Curry Barker did a much better job with Obsession, the gold standard so far for zoomer filmmakers

I’m honestly kinda happy with Pitfalls and FF3 being the peak of the series. Just the idea of the complex replicating “outdoors” and “stars” already kinda cements the existential weirdness. I do like the direction the movie took though. It took the concept Us fell flat with and did it justice. Also kinda reminds me of the SCP “This Place a Quiet Madness Made”, with the whole recursive deteriorating location underneath a location thing. Series had higher highs. Movie was fine.

I think this is meant to show visible progression in the "quality" of the interpretarions and copies of the backrooms, first it's a literal stickman that apes what he hears (human speech and screams), and then it starts to phase into more humanoid creatures with more lifelike features, eyes, noses, mouths, arms, hands fingers legs etc. BUT, you can still notice, just like with the stickmen, the complex doesn't really understand what it's copying, think of an AI doing its best to produce people, te earlier you go the more fucked up things you get, things that barely ressemble faces, multiple fingers, multiple arms, even today in the most recent models you can see shit with extra fingers and arms or two heads or two whole torsos in different possible positions at the same time, that's what he's going for I think, the complex is slowly improving its imitation of human life, of course, when taken at face value the earlier iterations look way better than the improved ones.
>>
>>220836248
>>220836293

The appeal of the backrooms is that zoomers subconsciously understand that they live in the End of History, a stagnant civilization of boredom with no energy and only endless regurgitation. Everything has already been built for them and they can't create anything new. Very fitting that the other big movie that opened recently was another Star Wars spinoff.

As someone who had been watching the YouTube series since the start, it was extremely disappointing. It reeks of someone else telling him what it should be about and meddling with the concept, unless he really is retarded enough to just make a cliche horror instead of continuing with his original ideas.
>>
>>220836523
Right. I have no interest in revisiting this movie at all. And it's a shame it came out the same time as another zoomer horror film Obsession that was much, much more impressive.
>>
>>220836613
Backrooms will probably not do as well, negative word of mouth will probably start to get around at this point. Even Obession had some slight struggles getting audiences and something like Backrooms mostly appeals to a specific niche, and chances are that niche were the first ones through the doors to see it and there are no more big crowds left after the first two days of showings.
I really don't get why he'd abandon everything he'd set in place during the YouTube series, I can only guess it was the studio.
>>
>>220836396
not that guy, but the movie is not committed to a consistent narrative for its characters
>Chiwetel Ejiofor is presented as a character who's struggling but entering the backrooms just made him crazy, but then not really, he just dies without getting anything resolved.
>the therapist has a past trauma about her mom that goes nowhere, used to explain why she has a piece of rock that she uses to fight the pirate monster.
>the two employees of the store just died offscreen
>phil, the named scientist, is completely tacked on the movie
and that's what happens when your only focus on your fan videos is to show off your cool backrooms scenarios, but never working on storytelling
>>
>>220836665
Such a waste. I think critics know it too, since I see constant praise for the concept and designs, but not the plot. Lack of good plot only works for films that are beautiful visually and this isn't a beautiful film at all.
>>
You can tell most people didn't even bother to watch the full youtube series before watching the movie.
>>
>>220836327
The original Backrooms and liminal spaces aren't exclusively for 29-year-olds, just like how Minecraft was a game made for everyone in 2009 which eventually trickled down to be repackaged as a movie for kids
>>
>>220836327
But it isn't? The YouTube series was kind of scary but this just isn't scary or interesting at all. It's just taken the location and dropped some boring plot into it.
>>
I hope we get some new Youtube episodes soon.

He may have signed over all of the IP to A24 or he's under an exclusivity agreement not to make anymore for a long time. Either way, he's already said he wants to make a sequel movie, so his YouTube series might grind to a halt entirely.
>>
>>220836940
not a good first impression sadly.
>>
>>220836972
Sad really. It could've worked if he hadn't deviated from the story he was already telling, most people probably would've even settled for just a feature length version of all the videos so far.
>>
>>220837002
It reeked of being adapted from an ambiguous draft or outline, and not developed any further than it. Artists are supposed to find their work as they're creating it, but you don't really see that here. The smoking gun is how abruptly the narrative changes in the 3rd act. He probably thought "and then the main character becomes comfy in the backrooms because of the former trauma I established earlier. it's like poetry, it rhymes" without actually developing any of this. I mean it's amateur shit. He's only 20 after all
>>
if I were to rewrite the movie I'd just combine his therapist and his wife into one character and I feel like that would've made the third act fit better
>>
>>220835768
I love Morley Grove but there is no way it'd work as a full length movie
>>
>>220837097
I mean yeah. Again, just very obvious shit he didn't do because this is the first time he's working with characters and doesn't seem to know how it works yet.

>I mean it's amateur shit. He's only 20 after all
But even so, he managed just fine on his YouTube series, but somehow not the major movie that had a team of people helping him? Maybe he's just reached his creative limit.
>>
>>220837160
The youtube series just has different vibe that doesn't really work too well as a full length movie.
>>
>>220837176
It would honestly work as a found footage movie, without a doubt. This could've been a renaissance for it just like the first Paranormal Activity was after Blair Witch Project.

Things also seem to be really bad since YouTubers are going into cope mode about people online shitting on the movie it seems. Apparently even the Five Nights at Freddies movies have better audience scores at this point and that's pissing people off, saying "audience scores meaning nothing, just look at the critics scores"
>>
>>220837213
The movie was plainly not entertaining or engaging. It sacrifices a found footage approach for a more traditional narrative that never develops properly. It's awkward, lame and not interested in playing its own audience like a fiddle as a horror film is supposed to do because we're not on board with what we're watching unlike the youtube videos where we're seeing things from the perspective of the camera, in perfect tune with the characters.

not that guy, but the issue with cosmic horror is 100 years old now. nobody knows how to end these stories.

>seemingly normal situation
>slightly off things begin happening
>reality bending escalates
>chase sequence, increasingly hostile and weird environment
>total shock and breakdown
>????
>the end

sometimes they get possessed by some demon, or they pass a curse to an unsuspecting person, or they wake up in another reality and have to fend for themselves in an alien world, but none of these are satisfying. the hook of these stories is the unknown, so you can't explain it or end in a satisfying way - which is why they all become a vibe. youtube is about dropping into a world for 10-20 mins and then going somewhere else. a feature movie is about a story arc and a hero or antihero going on a journey.

lovecraft's vibe is evil foreigners and cursed objects leading you to disaster, cults, ancient ruins and immortal uncaring monsters. but it's all a bunch of short stories that only work well if you imagine it in your head, watching or reading them is mid.
>>
>>220837273
Put it better than I could myself.
>>
>>220837304
True enough. I did however really enjoy Into the Mouth of Madness, and while the ending isn't great, it's one of the better endings as far as cosmic horror goes.
>>
So is it explained as to why any of this at all occurs.
The youtube series were pretty good, but this looks so retarded.
>>
>>220837368
not really, it just follows the black guy and his therapist. the reason for the monsters is they're just making copies from their memories and they're imperfect because they're shitty copies.

This is what horror has become. Zoomers being eternally scared of empty rooms and chuck e cheese characters.

And this happens..... why exactly?

I laughed when an anon posted leaks about there being a black pirate monster and I'm still stunned that he was actually right.
