He has aspects of the house he lost to his ex-wife which he constantly brings up. That likely comforts him. For his therapist dealing with clark helps her to realize her own path in life as a therapist was her own way of dealing with her personal trauma of trying to save her past self. She realizes this at the dinner table scene dealing with crazy clark. Her using part of the concrete from her driveway, the bit with her handprint, to smash the monster and it breaks is sorta a physical representation of her letting go of the past I think.
