Odysseus accosts Athena when she reveals herself to him after he finally lands in Ithaca, questioning why she seemed absent and unhelpful for his 10 year voyage. And in Nolan's movie, it looks like Odysseus says this "not even the gods can stop me" line early in the voyage likely as a simple meaningless phrase rather than an actual statement of defiance. Like saying "I'm going to make it home even if it kills me."
