They could have instead kept the camera focused on the people at the testing area. Show the abject horror on their faces as they used to lighting to light up the night and have their shadows stretch off into the distance. Pull the camera back and show how far the light was going to give it scale while leaving how horrific it is in the audiences imagination. Then people would go home and look up the actual footage and understand why they had such looks of horror on their facesSeriously, that explosion had zero real effort and was pathetic
