like it or not, yes, it's going in the popular film canon for having such an immense crossover appeal with horror veterans and gen pop. It has all the hallmarks from doing something novel, being relatable, evergreen and driving endless discourse while actually effective as a horror film. It increased sales week 2 because people are going to see it multiple times and dragging their friends with them. Probably similar to It Follows<>Get Out in its historical comp as time goes on.One brilliant thing it does is create a tension with freaky Nikki where she can be placated to some degree but when she's not on screen you fear she is progressively escalating and so there's a push pull where it makes you identify with Bear wanting to be in the scene with her assuaging her yet that doesn't immunize you from being terrorized which is a fantastic structural manifestation of the abusive relationship theme.

Talking about movies is dead. Is this an original movie? Nah, but I like the performances and how it was executed. But then we get the two extremes, half the people acting like this is the best thing ever and the other half acting like it is the worst thing ever. I hate the criticism of something being overrated, it's meaningless, it's about perceiving something is great based on hype. All these discussions come down to that expectations conversation. The internet is full of people with ridiculously high expectations who hate everything or low expectations. It's all meta shit. Also the originality conversation is just as boring. Subverting expectations, meta plots, all that bullshit, is just as bad as culture wars and it's created by nitpicky bullshit over originality. Horror works because it's cheap and built on a bunch of word of mouth. But the rest of cinema is dead because of conversations like this all about hype and bullshit and from a lot of people who haven't even seen the film. It was inconclusive, she said eww over Ian's comment but then she also said she could only talk to Bear about this stuff. Ian was also actively sabotaging him, criticised his romantic approach practiced on the waitress, said not to do it at game night, told him to say Freaky Nicky. Sarah may not be entirely reliable as she fancied Bear but she did say that Ian thought she was trying to get back at Ian. A lot of the comments really hit that teenage/young adult shit. Every comment dissected for if they like you or not. And Nikki reflected that a bunch when she didn't feel loved despite loving him. And the wish call line said, be there for her. Bear saw the other side of that shit.

Granted, it is “good” ONLY because the main girl is legitimately amazing in it, so I have to give the movie some credit, but everything else in the movie is so bad I have to wonder if it was a fluke. If the rest of the movie was just a handwave excuse to get this really great performance from this one character, then fine the movie is actually “good” and succeeds at what its doing. But if the movie is trying to be good despite that performance, as in the way that performance carries the movie is mostly accidental, then the movie is genuinely bad. Taking both of these options into account, the movie is ok. The plot is repetitive, makes no sense, and goes nowhere interesting that you dont see coming from the first 20min. I also wouldnt call it scary but I almost never watch horror so I dont know what is consideree scary or how bad other horror slop is
