I have hitched across the US about a dozen times. It's okay when you are college-age or a little older. It is legal in every state, but the local cops might give you shit anyway if you look destitute or dangerous. It is rarely dangerous for men.1) Don't look dangerous. 2) Carry a sign. The best thing is to carry a big sign that gives the state you are going to. WHen you get near your destination, carry a sign that has the initials of a local university where you are headed. People will pick up college kids crossing country in the summer.3) Be patient. Don't hitch at night.4) avoid freeway onramps. Think about it from the driver's pov. He is speeding up and is not gonna stop for your ass. Go a block or so from the onramps where there is plenty of room for someone to stop. Once you are on the freeway, try to get dropped off at rest areas and hitch from there.5) Don't carry a weapon. If you believe it is that dangerous, then just don't do it. Use a ride-share service which is available in any kind of city or town with a college.
