you only gain muscles if you train close to muscle failure
for pushups that means when you are kissing the ground and physically cant push yourself up, you roll over stand up, make a 3 minute break and do it a second time
if it takes too many pushups to reach that state(over 20) try wearing a backpack with something heavy in it

are you saying that doing more isn't better? so trying to reach 100 pushups for example isn't worth it, or are you just using my case as an example

if you are young you can go to 100 but if you are over 30 you might want to reconsider doing too many repetitions because the gain is minimal while every repetition increases the strain on your joints
Im starting to get fit too and from what I gathered its ideal to do 8-12 repetitions of whatever you are doing, so increase the weight to a point where your muscles fail in that range
doing it twice is enough, combine that with 4-5 other exercises and that way you can have a pretty compact workout that takes like 30 minutes

My daily 35 year old man workout
