HOLY SHIT!!!!
>>
>>220870081
really happy for him
>>
Kane is a great name for horror directing
>>
>>220870081
I paid to see it 3 times
You're welcome Kane
>>

100% deserved

wasn't this a webseries?
>>
>>220870117
THAT'S GOTTA BE KANE
>>
We're rich bros. Where do I sign up to get a cut of the royalties?
>>
>/x/ memes are being turned into movies
yikes
>>
>>220870138
He made that too.
>>
>>220870107
And imma let him finish
>>
Why though? Is the audience all twelve year old iPad kids?
>>
>>220870081
least surprising thing I've ever read
>>
>>220870156
I always thought the backrooms was some gay faggot zoomer bullshit and didn't participate, so I don't deserve any royalties. Only creepypasta I ever liked was Squidward's Suicide because I found it hilarious. None of this shit was ever scary, just gay.

This is the most successful movie A24 has ever put out btw

Hollywood is finally finding the new generation of directors and creators who can actually pull the new generations to the theater. This is a similar shift to Hollywood like what happened in the late 60s when movies like Easy Rider were making a bank.

No kidding???
also, how creepy is it that if you obtain any sort of notoriety, some tranny will spend their life meticulously researching every single detail of your life and publishing it online?
>>
>>220870299
That's why I could never become famous, fags from when I was a teenager would dig up all the edgy stuff I used to be into and ruin my reputation. Nevermind the fact it was 15 years ago and I've long since moved past it, wouldn't matter to these people.
>>
guess the definition of "original" changed
>>
>>220870226
You guys really need to stop regurgitating this. Everyone knows it's based on the creepypasta.
>>
>>220870341
By original they mean not a property that Hollywood has already done and remade 5 times
>>
>>220870341
Yeah it means it's not an existing IP
>>
>>220870338
it's just weird. homeboy knows what this dude's christmas gifts were? like, what are we doing?
>>
Did it break the record for paranormal activity?
>>
>>220870360
But it was clearly based on a 4chan IP
>>
>>220870359
>>220870360
Do you think the anon who came up with it could come out of the woodwork and sue the fag or at least put pressure on him for a cut?
>>
>>220870393
/x/ threads with pictures of spooky buildings (which became "liminal spaces") have been a thing since like 2010. No one person started it. It's just something that caught on as a trend.
>>
File: 1 kmZYy1ZIYTmM60HUXAC0cw.jpg (694 KB, 1252x1252)

it has people and monsters walking around in it, doesn't it?
the whole point of liminal spaces was that they were completely empty.
>>
>>220870117
Sutter Kane?
>>
holy shit imagine being the next big director at just 20. enjoy the pressure to deliver on your next one kid.
>>
>>220870431
hallways are usually not empty. you would know that if you ever went outside.
>>
>>220870431
The whole concept suffered the same decay as most creepypasta ideas. You can never just have a spooky idea. There always has to be an ooga booga monster, or your dead girlfriend's soul haunting a Quake server.
>>
>>220870393
No. This is essentially a public forum. Shooting off random ideas doesn't give you ownership. Maybe if that anon had made an actual published story then they could say they were ripped off or infringed on. It would be like trying to sue because someone made a movie about the cock mongler
>>
what other /x/ stuff could be a movie?

mandela effect? (not that shitty one from a while ago)
scp?
>>
>>220870393
No, Kane's version is significantly more fleshed out and at best has it's setting based on the vague creepy pasta post. Even if you found a judge who'd agree that the anon who posted it owned the concept he'd lose due to a failure to protect the IP given all the video games and monetized webseries that exist based on his post.
>>
>>220870510
>It would be like trying to sue because someone made a movie about the cock mongler
I would do this if I were the cock mongler.
>>
>>220870081
It has an R rating too, as does Obsession. Especially interesting considering I personally thought only little kids cared about those Backrooms videos.
>>
Oh, btw, the whole idea of a mysterious infinite space is ripped off from the book House of Leaves.
>>
ghost directed by Osgood Perkins
>>
>>220870555
And maybe The Stanley Parable.
>>
>>220870513
I could share some from back in the day, but at this point I kind of don't want to. Fuck Hollywood getting fat off content that was uploaded for free, in good will.
>>

>>

>content

>>
>>220870613
perfectly normal word in the English language, but fair point.
>>
>>220870431
The point was the uneasiness of endless liminal spaces that realistically go nowhere. You can take the original prompt to be the eventual paranoia leading you to hear things or something actually being there. It's one of those if it's truly infinite then realistically at some point someone would come across something and that's the worst part of you think about. Endless rooms that lead nowhere all alone, do you realistically want to meet something out of loneliness?
>>220870555
Kane's Backrooms isn't exactly infinite as we have 2 instances of dead ends with expansion events. It only grows as it gets more information from people that go into the Complex or people/things near Null Zones(no clip areas). It's ever growing but there are dead ends that have been established. Who knows how big that place is by 2017 given the movie and earlier videos take place in the 90s.

>>
>>220871096
I don't know, man. Starting on YouTube at age 16 is impressive. Like, even if you have a leg up, learning camera work that early in life means you put in the hard work.
>>
>>220871107

>>
>>220871024

>>
Liminal Space and the horror behind it isn't original and concepts have been done before like Cube. Horror movies also love to use liminal spaces for tension in scenes. The only thing the /x/ poster did was give a nice setting for a world where the entire liminal uneasiness is the main focus.

Worldwide total of $90 million. Backrooms already beat that in one weekend. The ones to beat are Everything Everywhere All At Once ($147M) and Marty Supreme ($191M).

If A24 is smart they will nominate it for Oscar production design, and also at least Chiwetel Ejiofor, who had already been nominated before.

>>
>>220876481
The third half removed a lot of the charm. The haphazard flashback story and weird psyche imprinting aspect the backrooms had was a bit much. Also ASYNC's role in the movie is waaaaay too esoteric, I'd rather they not have been in it at all or at least as a background clean up crew. Not like they give you much info on them anyway.
>>
>>220876528
>horror movie has bad third act
this is pretty much a universal hurdle in the genre, those horrors that can avoid this instantly become candidates for top tier horror films, Shining arguably has a good third act, Jacob's Ladder, in a more modern vein Hereditary. The Thing aswell but that movie is an outsider horror and lacks many of the problems the genre faces
>>
>>220870226
does this guy at lest thanks /x/ in the credits?
>>
>>220876528
The third act is where it all goes to shit, like they didn't know what to do with it or wrote it first before writing the actual start of the movie, it's just so disjointed from the rest of it.
>Also ASYNC's role in the movie is waaaaay too esoteric, I'd rather they not have been in it at all or at least as a background clean up crew. Not like they give you much info on them anyway.
Yeah there was really no point at all. They were throwing to many ideas around at once and didn't know what to actually stick with.
>>
>>220876558
Kane has never acknowledged 4chan or the post at all, even Wikipedia says it's from 4chan and they're notorious for not wanting to acknowledge anything positive about this place.

>>220870196
>dad literally worked for nintendo
living so many of our young boy dreams, we all said we wanted to make video games growing up and while Kane is making movies rn I guarantee if he wanted he could use this exposure to pivot to game development, maybe make a AAA backrooms horror game (could make for a great silent hill esque game)
>>

The Thing avoided the problem I had with Jacob's Ladder or the Backrooms. I think Jacob's Ladder did the psyche aspect better, but the backrooms is supposed to be physical rather than psychological. So I got more upset at the imprinting than I usually would, I honestly thought it was just a virtual almost procedural generated copy of the 'real' world. I hated the exposition at the end of Jacob's Ladder in the same way, but Backrooms at least made the exposition plot relevant through Clark. I got the impression that the segment of the backrooms was entirely Clark's imprint, otherwise him not dying makes no sense. I also can't tell just how interconnected it all is, the fact ASYNC exists suggests that it is.

the "back room" is where they rape the victims. they hide the rape in the back, so nobody notices. just like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. a tale as old as time, to be quite obvious

>>
>>220876795
He's pretty much messed up at this point. Instead of focusing on things that can continue, he focused on a dull one and done storyline, so a sequel would just be same place and different story which audiences won't go for. That and it's pretty evident this is the one thing he knows how to make and doesn't have any further ideas, which is worsened by the fact that his writing skills were always lacking compared to his VFX skills. He didn't even write the movie either, some TV writer did almost all of it since Kane couldn't.

He's got a future in VFX but probably not in making movies. The list of co credits for everything in the movie is like looking at the writers list for a boy bands hit single.

You can just keep pumping out the same basic movie. Do it like the shorts or ganes where it starts off with some teens VHSing themselves at a skate park and slipping into the back rooms then have the yellow suit dudes find their mangled body's.

Oo! Start movie two off as a couple trying to film themselves in an airplane bathroom trying to join the mile high club, they fall through one of the walls into the backrooms and get chased by monsters for a bit. Or you could have them fooling around then cut to one of the yellow suit guys walking around the rooms and 2 body's explode infront of him, starting #2 off with a figurative and literal bang.
The rest of the movie is yellow suits trying to find entrances and map the place out. Toss in some creepy monster chases and there ya go. Maybe a cult of people who got stuck in there for a generation or two?

The problem with how he made the movie is that he's locked it all in as it is, whereas staying found footage and keeping the mystery actually would've mean infinite sequels. So because of his YouTube, everyone knows why it exists and who made it, and now everyone also knows that the monsters are just copies from peoples memory. All the mystery got zapped.
>>
>>220877041
I watched his shorts back in the day. I didnt think it was explained how it was made, only that those guys found it and were mapping it out and wanted to sell it as infinite storage or office space but then they started finding monsters and shit the deeper they went.

Im phone posting at work, I was just thinking for the monsters being explained as copied memories, the movie strongly hints at that being exactly what they are but you could always write it off as insane babble from Mordo. He seemed to know what he was talking about until his monster bit his neck in half.
Just write it out as that being the first few layers or only half right or something.

I know what you mean about them removing the mystery though. Not everything needs an explination and whatever you think up will always be better than what gets described.
They should retcon it/play it off that black guy was just nuts and has no idea, they have no idea.

Honestly, it should've just stayed like it did from his very first YouTube video. There's a strange palce, people fall into it, there are random distorted monsters and some agency wants to figure out what's happening.
But instead now we know this company made it and the monsters are just copies. The unknown and unseen is what we as humans fear the most, so explaining everything dampens that severely. It's also why I got bored of the Backrooms, I really started losing interest when the whole "company made it" explanation happened in his YouTube series.

Yeah it sucked, I lost all interest with that. Maybe if they can see your IP log then can trace it back to your IP and that could be used as proof of copyright claim. But that means the website would need to have records going that back for post IPs.
>>
>>220877582
Even then, IPs are very commonly shared with many other users, so it still doesn't show it's him. There was also a period a few years ago where a lot of people got rangebans because some retard kept spamming on some board and the ISP used just a handful of IPs for all their customers in that entire state.

>>

I would say that range ban is mostly for using cell towers, those sharr IPs. But even then, checking the post IP to the ISP would narrow down the copyright owner a lot. What are the chances of the copyright claim and post being in the same county/region?
>>
>>220870081

Backrooms, Iron Lung and Obsession shows that you don't need to spend tens of millions to entertain people and why Horror is the best genre.

What's sad is that instead of financing low budget genre movies like those, streaming channels (Netflix, Amazon etc....) would rather spend hundreds of millions on vanity projects and outright trash i.e. Killers of the Flower Moon/Rebel Moon, both of which cost 200 million to make each when they could have given 20 filmmakers 10 mill each, or even 40 with 5 mill each and have a steady stream of new content to keep people subbed.

Anywho, I'm soo happy to see good Horror movies succeed while there are still thousands of great novels/novellas/short stories that would make for awesome movies/shows if done properly, also.....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Backrooms#Original_creepypasta
The original Backrooms picture has been floating around on 4chan for about 15 years.
>>
One of the most important rules I ever picked up and try to hold myself to is "Don't punish people for doing what you want them to do". Zooms, by and large, have created almost nothing, which causes much of the friction on 4chan because they have so much resentment and noting to fill that gap in their souls, so as a generation they hate everything made before they were born by default. But THIS is a step in the right directions. Zooms finally made something. They got their yellow room movie. It might not be the best movie in the world, maybe it's got this flaw and that flaw and whatever, but it's someone doing something right, it's someone trying to create something that Zs can call their own, and that's good. It should be emotionally rewarded (reasonably) not punished.
>>
>>220878733
>Zooms
One did. One. This isn't some generation thing, it's one guy. Zoomers are gradually turning into Indians with this shit where if one of them do something, they all feel like they did it and deserve the credit too.

>>
How do rights work on this now?
The Backrooms and similar creepypasta are collaborative fiction, mostly anonymously-written, owned by no one in particular, a shared space for creativity. So now that a major motion picture with that title exists, what happens legally? Are people allowed to make new Backrooms style content anymore without infringing on a studio?
>>
>>220878718
I've been seeing that image on 4chan since I was 22 years old. I'm currently 37. But all of these liminal space shit started a long, long time ago. In his defense, even the ASYNC animatic videos are very unclear about whether the company made the Backrooms, or found it. The animated videos with the trucks suggest they were trying to take credit for its existence and commercially exploit it but the movie suggests they simply found it, and now they're beginning to lose control over its bridge points to the real world (they clearly only find the furniture store portal after the main events of the movie have already happened.)

I think Kane clearly wants to leave it a bit more ambiguous, though it's blatantly obvious ASYNC is trying to exploit the existence of this space, because company like money.

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought this. I've no idea why they included some retarded "men are stupid; women suffered" subplot that kept taking up screen time. It was an almost 2 hour fucking movie, why? I did not care about the therapist scammer at all, the movie would've been way more interesting had they just used the three from the store.

Oh and them revealing the "monster" per usual was a dogshit decision. I couldn't take the movie seriously after it did. This thing went from moving fast and unpredictable to waddling around.

This movie is only making so much money because it's baiting people with the title of backrooms. The 2 hour youtube backrooms videos go harder than this, sadly.

The original post did not come up with any of the cool lore Kane Pixels created, like async, the backrooms copying your memories etc.

I don't, this movie was clearly Oscar bait. We really needed the woman to have her moment calling this guy a piece of shit and seeing that joke of a monster. The most uncompelling actress I've ever seen. The first two stoner characters were more interesting.

Unironically the YouTube series is so much better it's insane. It has to be studio meddling at this point, unless he really did just decide to shit out a terrible plot. The reviews have also been getting more negative on review sites as more people have gone to see it too, so I think the original fans have come and gone so now the normies are coming to see it and being disappointed at the retarded plot.

Kek not a fucking chance this thing gets an Oscar for anything but the special effects.

The only good indie movie out of these three is Iron Lung. No bullshit, no monster reveal, no niggers, no misandry, and leaving a proper open ended ending.

A24 is known for their drama stories and the story was written by a dude that's not kane parsons. He just directed it.

The movie meets the requirements for an Oscar though, it has a POC and has strong woman lead.

I'm not sure how the academy will view a movie about a narcissistic black guy that treats his wife like shit though.

This is false.

The white woman who survived trauma calls him a piece of shit and then he dies. The actor is also the same black guy who got accused of abusing his girlfriend. So it fits perfectly.

Didn't know that. Maybe that explains why he's gone from mainstream movies to appearing in b-movie slop from A24, I remember a few threads of people wondering how some moderately big name was involved in this movie.
