>>220875072>While there is no single consensus pick, The Searchers (1956) is most frequently hailed as the greatest Western of all time. Directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne, it is celebrated for its breathtaking cinematography, complex themes, and iconic protagonist.
>>220876205Others from the Golden 50s considered to be legendary includeHigh Noon (1952): A tense, real-time thriller that is widely regarded for its themes of civic duty and democracy.High Noon has been cited as a favorite by several U.S. presidents. Dwight Eisenhower screened the film at the White HouseRonald Reagan cited High Noon as his favorite film, due to the protagonist's strong commitment to duty and the law.and Bill Clinton hosted a record 17 White House screenings of it. "It's no accident that politicians see themselves as Gary Cooper in High Noon," Clinton said.

>>220876031Buffalo Bill Center of the West>Ahh, the movie that made John Wayne a star and John Ford a visionary. This is the oldest and perhaps most distinguished entry on this list and for good reason — it cemented the Western as a serious film genre and showed us what the West feels like in its vast, gritty glory. Stagecoach (1939) is a monumental film that single-handedly elevated the Western from a "B-movie" staple to a serious, respected art form. Directed by John Ford, it introduced complex psychological character studies and launched John Wayne to global superstardomBefore 1939, Westerns were mostly viewed as cheap, innocent pulp. Ford brought depth, sharp social commentary, and moral complexity to a simple plot of strangers surviving a perilous journey. It transformed Wayne from a struggling B-movie actor into Hollywood's definitive cowboy icon, cementing his star persona and famous on-screen presence. The film features legendary stunts (like Yakima Canutt's famous horse-transfer sequence done without special effects) and established the disaster/group-jeopardy movie structure.Monument Valley: Ford utilized the striking, rugged landscape of Monument Valley as a character in its own right. Stagecoach set a precedent for using the vast American desert to create cinematic myth

>>220880117>Clint's character turns into batman the last 10 minutes when he was shown as a loser since the beginning. He was reluctant to kill again. He couldn't hit shit because he didn't want to. When he had motivation the old instincts came back. Aside from that Gene Hackman was the only real killer in the room everyone else was a sheep with a gun. Once Clint killed Gene Hackman it was a shooting gallery. That's kind of the point, what made Clint an effective killer was the willingness to kill and to be killed while everyone else was trying to save their own ass.
>>220880233He was also lucky, but he's always been lucky when it comes to killing folks. The entire film is a subversion of the romantic western.
>>220880196>an anti-western that intentionally subverts most western tropesMost big westerns, especially by the 50s, but even going back to the silent era, do this though. >>220880334>Most big westerns, especially by the 50s, but even going back to the silent era, do this though.Oh come the fuck on anon, Unforgiven is like the quintessential anti-western. Broken Arrow is notable in that it subverts cowboys and indians (kinda) but lets not pretend it's a commentary on westerns as a whole, nor does it address the underlying romantic tropes or stylistic flourishes of the classic western.

>>220880440Still waiting on an answer to this, as again, westerns have been "subverting tropes" throughout their entire existence in film, and the 50s was the pinnacle. It's always been a genre that reflected on itself and used its setting to tell all kinds of stories from all different philosophies and moral directions.

>>220881113Some of them did subvert tropes, Gary Cooper for instance was in a film called "The Westerner" directed by William Wyler ....his character is clearly a psychopath if some sort and in the very first scene he appears in he's being put on trial and it's clear that they're doing their best to sentence him to death, but he escapes and ends up reuiniting two rivals tiwns through deceit. It's a clever little film and especially the first half is pretty unpredictable and an atypical western, especially for 1940.

>>220894200The Last HuntHome From The HillWinchester ‘73The Oklahoma KidThe Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
>>220896460I also agree it's not his best at all, but The Searchers is far and away the most accessible of the John Ford westerns, especially for a modern audience so I understand why it's the most respected Ford film.>it's in color and shot beautifully, but Ford's real masterpieces are all black & white.>the narrative is very straightforward, unlike Fort Apache and the Calvary trilogy which are oddly "slice of life" and don't have a concrete plot.>John Wayne's best performance and the clearest example of a "Fordian Hero" who builds a society he would never be able to live in.
My favorite Western is The Good, The Bad, and the Weird.
>>220896924To be fair, Wayne was born in 1907 and did ride a horse to school every day. I think he's a better actor than Coops, too. Even in his first movie at age 23, he had a ton of charisma and could deliver a monologue like nobody else, and that's without even setting out to be an actor. He just stumbled into it
>>220896924Wayne was the bigger faggot for not allowing "The Shootist" to follow the book. Because "The Shootist" was weak, it left an opening for "Unforgiven".
>>220897144John Wayne was a man of integrity and would never shoot someone in the back. I respect him for it.
>>220875711Made kek. Nice
>>220874866Don’t think anyone has mentioned this kino yet.
>>220897445It was the kinoest of them all
>>220897445I did >>220897033
>>220880233It's because he was sober all the movie, once drunk, he reverts to being the killer he was when young (and always drunk).

I like almost all of Errol Flynn's movies but his westerns are especially underrated, pretty sure he was the only non-American cowboy star
>>220897861Yul Brynner
>>220874866>kino walks through the door
Unforgiven was a very disappointing 7/10 filmFor me it's High Noon
>>220874866>kino cums through the back door
>>220897861I love Errol Flynn too, and you’re right, his westerns are underrated
>>220876482>all the woke tranny presidents like it
big western fan/autist here>ctrl f>0 lonesome doveeach and everyone of you are mouth breathing FUCKING RETARD MONKEYSALLOFYOU
>>220898270That's a TV show. We're talking films here.
>>220874926>they hated him because he spoke the truthClint Eastwood sucks
>>220892681Souless faggot
>>220898270>every other spoken line is about prostitutes or prostitutionToo crass for me
>>220876814I saw that in theaters
>>220898082This one is awesome. Incredible suspense the whole time, and very bloody which is great. Probably the best non-Sergio/Corbucci spaghetti western.
This is a really fun crazy movie. Supposedly John Milius’ screenplay was much better than the movie itself turned out, and you can definitely see the tone issues that arise from John Houston departing from the script, but it’s still a great movie. I liked The Westerner (1940) a little bit better, because it was a more serious movie, but this is still a gem. The Stacy Keach/Bad Bob scene alone is worth watching it for.
i like gun go bang
>>220882096>>220887061You clearly understand but you're arguing with idiots.I agree with you, but this board is full of low IQ children.
>>220881113That’s a good one. Poor guy just wants to talk to his wife for five minutes and then get out of town but people are always trying to kill him. Real bleak movie, sad look at the western and the hopelessness of outlaw life.
>>220888317>For some reason these haven't been mentioned yetI'll addThe White BuffaloCharles Bronson in an admitted ripoff of Jaws. Not the greatest Western but a fun flick
>>220881893>his character is clearly a psychopath if some sort and in the very first scene he appears in he's being put on trial and it's clear that they're doing their best to sentence him to deathHe bought a stolen horse from a guy and then rode into town on it, then the owner of the horse, a friend of “judge” Roy Bean sees him on it. Then Cooper bullshits his way into stalling his own hanging long enough for the guy who sold him the stolen horse to show up. He wasn’t a psychopath, he was just a saddle bum who almost got hung by mistake. Then he spends the rest of the movie trying to make peace between the cattlemen and the homesteaders. He makes friends with both sides and understands the viewpoints of both sides, but ultimately sides with the homesteaders when Roy Bean and his cattlemen buddies go against their word. Then he lures Bean to a Lilly Langtree show and tries to arrest him but has to shoot him instead.
>>220899154This one bored the piss out of me
>>220901103Sucks for you
>>220901081>Bean's obsession with Lilly LangtreeEven in the old west, they had waifus
Honestly, Rango should be in consideration, because a man can't walk out on his own story.
>>220901215I watched that a few weeks ago. Cute movie, but I can't in good conscience rate it among the best westerns like some people do in these threads
>Kirk Douglas did this in one take
>>220892018>>220877490If you like Assassination, you should watch I Shot Jesse James. Assassination took a lot from it.
>>220901874Not a western
>>220902054Yes it is.
>>220892438I think Hondo is badass, but not a dark movie if that's what you're looking for. Just a tough character in a harsh world
>>220902077>set in 1920s MexicoBy no definition can this be considered a western. There is sand in the movie, I'll give you that.
>>220902129>it doesn't matter if it looks like a western, deals with the same themes of a western and it's considered a western by practically everyone, it can't be a western because it wasn't set in the American frontier between the California Gold Rush of 1849 and the closing of the frontier in 1890,[2]:557
>>220874866I like High Noon
>>220902230It "looks like a western" as in it has sand in the movie? Is that what the genre means to you? There's sand, so it's a western?
>>220876814It sucks Viggo declined doing a sequel
>>220902261Yes, sand it's the only western-like thing about the treasure of the sierra madre, in fact it's the only thing that movie is about. This applies to lawrence of arabia, ben-hur and attack of the clones too and they're all indistinguishable from sierra madre and westerns as well.
>>220902343That's one down. Now what are "the themes of a western"? Greed? That's the genre in a nutshell? Spaghetti brain. Is Fargo a western to you? Steve Buscemi?
>>220875711Came here to post this, would have added if you disagree you're a zoomie
The good times are comin'When they do, I'll be thereWith my bowed feet firmly planted way up there...In mid-air
>>220876814Desaturated poster gives mid vibes but since you insist. I'll come after you if it sucks
>>220874866It’s actually rio bravo
For me, it's Pale Rider.
>>220874866Unforgiven can't be the best western because it is thematically inverted.
>>220875020this. the movie is only good because of little bill and english bob
