I had to watch it a couple times to really pick up on it, but did you guys realize that when he was teaching them about the chess pieces, he was really referring to THEM being the pawns! What an amazing metaphor! It was so deep and meaningful, I am amazed by the deep symbolism of this.Do the later seasons continue on with masterful symbolism like this? This was truly the pinnacle of storytelling that I have ever seen on a television show, and I think I can confidently say The Wire is the best show ever made without even having seen the entire series.Also the acting is amazing. Idris Elba and Dominic West do a great job with their Baltimore accents.
I only watched it last year, not a burger and I agree its a kino TV show.Falls off in quality in S5 a bit but the way it does a different area of the cities degeneracy each season adds to the charm of the show.

One of the writers was a homicide detective and the other was the newspaper's police reporter for years, so plots and characters have kinda wild levels of specificity because they pretty much were just stealing shit they saw irl and putting it on television. Baltimore's criminals are mostly black and the show has zero problem being very, VERY direct about this.They don't go softball on anyone, cops or criminals alike, and the show is fundamentally uninterested in big kumbaya moments. It has a much slower burn and by the third season there are a huge number of characters and intertwining plot threads. You have to both have patience with it and also the attention span to keep up with the story. Even in the 2000's some people struggled with it and the show made up for it by having top tier character performances. These days it would probably be even harder for someone to keep focused on it. Breaking Bad really defined the modern TV formula of having each new episode be something that absolutely hooks you and a plot that is relatively straightforward, yet engaging.
