george's ideas were never just absolute amazing shit 1000% of the way through, he worked best like most every other creative in a group and in his case as somebody who recognized the talent of people "under" him. just taking his ideas and running without him in the room would be meaningless, but having him in the room of a bunch of disney yes men or people looking to undermine him would also be pointless

I disagree.
Both Indiana Jones and Star Wars were all his since he's the one that was the fanboy over old serials and adventure stuff. All that genuine inspiration came from him, not people he worked with.
You can see it in the interviews from way back when, whenever they talk about approaches and ideas and script revisions everyone has the most idiotic takes about making it more "new hollywood" coded or subversive or some bullshit that clearly doesn't even remotely align with the concept.
Spielberg at the time was a good fit because he understood the tempo and the tone of a movie so that was a good collaboration. But the SW people Lucas worked with all had the most idiotic takes ever.

On top of that Lucas (on his own) did American Graffiti and THX which are excellent movies in their own right and show a refined sensibility in moviemaking.
ANH is still by far the best SW movie and noone to this day managed to replicate its energy even remotely.
