Robert E. Howard is the American J. R. R. Tolkien. Both men were contemporaries, valued poetry and language, and Tolkien even said he liked the Conan stories.
Martin said any pronunciation of ASOIAF names is correct because he doesn't care. How can he be compared to an Oxford philologist?
Martin is the American Rowling.

Why should a literary auteur be good at creating a fictional, plausible geography for a world able to host a civilization? The skills have nothing to do with each other. It’s a billion dollar franchise, it doesn’t matter

the global shitpost map isn't that big of an issue compared to the fact none of the rivers in westos start in the mountains. almost none of the cities are on a river or on a bay. most of the rich cities are in the west when they should be on the east near the trading ports. things like the twins aren't really at the best place to put a bridge across the rivers.
tolken's middle earth map is way better with all of the rivers starting in the mountains and some of the oddities can be explained by the fact they shit on really old maps where they just assumed 2 mountain ranges meet or they just assume 2 rivers meet because they didn't go all the way up the river. Like yuros just assumed the st lawrence connected directly to the Mississippi and that the east coast of the US was an island and you can see that on some old maps

Just because he was a trailblazer doesn’t mean he wasn’t bad or lacking by many standards today. He had square mountains for one plus no intricate cultural or political differences between Rohan and Gondor. You’d expect a really unique relationship between only the two free human countries
>>
>>220895916
He regularly hiked mountains and based them off of his real experiences. The differences between Rohan and Gondor are as large as those between Anglo-Saxon England and Byzantium; because those are the foundations of them.

California isn't rich due to gold mines. it's rich due to having 2 (four depending on if you want to count LA and Long branch as 2 ports and then all of the san francisco ports as separate ports) major pacific ports. LA and Long branch are massive and it's not like the east coast where you have NY/NJ, boston, baltimore, Huston, lousiana, philly, ect. The only other major ports are the ones on the columbia river and the ones in the pugent sound by seattle and seattle is surrounded by mountains so it's a pretty ass port and the columbia river ports are pretty inland on a river and surrounded by mountains and shit
Like outside of San Francisco Bay, which was the only major US port on the west coast for like 70 years, none of the gold mine areas are rich

Westeros is 180'd Ireland with everything North of the Wall being 180'd Scotland North of the Firth of Forth
Essos is also the "long" part of the rest of Britain (so the "protrusions" like Wales and Cornwall removed)
>>
>>220906021
Wrong

Westeros is literally a scaled up flipped Ireland with Great Britain (the main British island) on top of it. Sole exception is Cornwall has been clipped off Great Britain, flipped horizontally and stuck on the bottom of Ireland.

Meanwhile Essos is just a vague rectangle

"World building" autists will never understand that none of this shit matters. Geography is a backdrop, it's there because it needs to exist in some fashion but nothing past a vague outline of story relevant locations is important. Plot and characters are what makes a story enjoyable, not whether or not an imaginary map of the setting has realistic starting points for rivers.

You can seethe all you want but these books and adaptations have been wildly successful by any objective metric which should be all the proof you need that no one gives a fuck about the minute details of geography.

the reach is relatively independent like dorne. they're out of the way of all the main plot bullshit and thus not subject to dragons or armies breaking down their wealth of knowledge as collateral nearly as often and when it does it's not in a huge population center, it's also actually beneficial for them to have it be decentralized like that. if anybody wanted to conquer the reach they'd have to cripple highgarden + oldtown + the arbor and all of them are highly defensible, produce varying amounts of ships/food/wine etc. if anybody actually bit off conflict with them they'd have the advantage, but the citadel + arbor wine and ships keep them important to the throne. thus nobody fucks with them and they can hide at home from capital bullshit
>>Lannisport, possibly their wealthiest region, sits just by the pirate archipelago
the westerlands are talked up because of the lannisters being old money, but their gold mines are depleted and it's more smoke and fake prestige than real wealth as time goes on. the pirates are busy infighting from being retarded savages like dothraki (which is why it's a big deal when pirate king unites them)

Nowadays they aren't, because gold isn't worth much in comparison to back then, but plenty of wealthy cities were born in gold mining areas, Villarica (now Ouro Preto) was the largest city in the Americas for a short while, Johannesburg was born because of a gold rush and Melbourne and Sidney becaume actual cities because of one. Punta Arenas in the Patagonia and Dawson City in Alaska were pretty large in their heyday despite being located in frozen wastelands.
The thing is gold deposits rarely are large enough to sustain a city for prolonged period of time so most gold mining cities died as fast as they appeared unless they also had silver deposits that usually were a longer lasting source of prosperity.

gold didn't get it started. Chandler from Friends sailed with the great white fleet to china and japan within a decade of when mexico ceded california and the king's leg to the US in exchange for their king back. the 1849 gold rush got more people to physically move to san francisco but the actual fucking port there was the reason it became a financial hub. every major city except for like DC is on what was at one time a major shipping port. the whole point of the oregan trail and the fight with the bongistanis over vancouver and washington state was to establish pacific sea ports.

Reminds me of the attack on titan world map, which is litterally just Earth upside down and most of the story actually takes place in Madagascar and Africa lol.

He was an Anglo-Saxon scholar and pulled on sources from English mythology to create something for them in the modern day. Saying he plagiarised German myth is like saying Greeks plagiarised Roman myth when the root is the same.

Is this all one guy who really wants it to be Ireland? Ireland doesn't have the jutting peninsula (Dorne) which looks like flipped Cornwall
