Punta Arenas in the Patagonia and Dawson City in Alaska were pretty large in their heyday despite being located in frozen wastelands. The thing is gold deposits rarely are large enough to sustain a city for prolonged period of time so most gold mining cities died as fast as they appeared unless they also had silver deposits that usually were a longer lasting source of prosperity.
