Were there any worthwhile additions to the Special Editions or were they all shit?

>>220898303the emperor scene in empires strike back was better in the special editions, but beyond some other minors things they were mostly shit
>>220898350This is the only one that everyone (who wasn’t a spiteful contrarian) would agree on. There are some cgi touchups to SFX shots. You could either prefer the better effects or by a miniatures and practical effects purist. They’re both valid defensible positions. As is which voice you prefer for Boba Fett. Apart from that it’s sloppa all the fucking way down:>Macklunkey>NOOOOO (happens twice)>Jedi Rocks>Unnecessary Jabba scene, repeating the dialogue from the Greedo cantina scene (which just happened) almost word for word>de-aged outtake Anakin I probably missed something else awful but I don’t want to think about the Special Ed(itions) too long.

It was an interesting experiment in "adding" to a movie before re-release so people see it "improved", but it went exactly as predicted. Autists started screaming that each change is intolerable, they had a whole list of ideas about what to change and internet magnified their voices.By the time the prequels rolled out Lucas already had a target on his back which only grew larger as the now already disgruntled subset of fans started making further lists on how they would "improve" the prequels. Every single shot, transition, background character and detail now became something to be contested and argued about.Basically Lucas should have never made any enhanced editions and never opened the door to shot-by-shot scrutiny. Once that happened it was all over for him in the long run.
>>220898946does not help that spielberg and lucas attempted to scrub all evidence of unedited versions from history
>>220898303Victory Celebration and the Cloud City windows is a 100% improvement as far as I'm concerned.
>>220898303The prequel humor looks so out of place in the original movies. I respect George for having six massive movies made in his vision, but he's also a quadruple fucking retard for many other reasons
>>220898717>Victory celebration doesn’t erase historyHow can you be this dull?
>>220898829Oh yeah I thought I referred to that by saying I hate how it repeats dialog. I think by the third or fourth iteration, the CGI finally looks ok, but you can’t get around the fact the Greedo scene was written to replace it and having both is superfluous.Oh, having cgi Boba Fett look directly at the camera? That REALLY rustles my jimmies.
>>220899013Yub nub sucks and is not worth preservation.
>>220899049Wait, also, doesn’t Han actually step on Jabbas tail and the fat slug just takes it? Yeah, fuck that. It has been years since I watched anything but my laserdisc ripped dvds or the 4k projects once I had them. Definitely over a decade, but also definitely not two decades. I truly struggle to remember most of the changes that aren’t the most glaringly retarded examples. >>220899064Yub nub absolutely does suck, but you don’t get to decide what does and doesn’t deserve preservation.
>>220898303Back in the 90s I remember loving what he was doing. I didnt like the Han shooting changes but it wasn't a dealbreaker. I loved how he was expanding the universe and the changed in Empire cloud city were cool. But then he changed the ending of return of the jedi and that really REALLY pissed me off. As a kid Vader being silent leading up to his decision to save Luke was always my favorite part of the trilogy.
>>220898717>Darth Vader Shouting NO! In ROTJthanks for reminding me of this asshole. i literally seethed for 10 minutes straight when a friend showed me this. WHAT THE FUCK were they thinking? it had to be them trolling

RotJ might have it the worst with that fucking dance number with the CG aliens at Jabba's palace
>>220898968>does not help that spielberg and lucas attempted to scrub all evidence of unedited versions from historyThis. When you release a New Coke, you're supposed to bring back the Classic a year later with much artificial fanfare (and much profit). Heck, even keep selling both versions if you want--the autists would probably buy both, even if they claim to hate the Special Edition, just to be "completionists". But no....I don't know if Disney can legally do this, but if they were serious about undoing all the damage from the last decade, all they'd need to do is a proper 4K physical release of the theatrical Original Trilogy with 0 bullshit. They could even do a concurrent theatrical re-release, IMAX upscale, the works, and set some new box office records for old media. Jewcas probably has contracts in place to prevent that now, but he won't be around for ever.
The Jabba scene is great because it gives us the best Han line ever, which is the best because it's just a giant accident. "Jabba, you're a wonderful human being." went from a bit of lame dry Lucas dialogue to witty gold with the slug Hutt design cgied in. And that's fucking great.
"Maclunky" is the most coherent** edit of the cantina shooting**for first time viewers
George Lucas made the special editions solely to spite his ex-wife.
>>220898457>Unnecessary Jabba scene,It was mildly interesting because they were trying to repurpose and bring back a cut scene they always wanted to include but weren't happy with the execution. If the special editions existed along side the theatrical/THX remaster it would have been fine, but it doesn't really belong in the definitive edition.
>>220899290The doco said he needed money for the prequels
>>220898350And now the emperor scene is further ruined by the jewish mouse. I found out after doing a 1m trial streaming sub to watch Andor. They added the obnoxious vader "NOOOOO" when he's throwing palpatine into the pit. What a fucking disgusting addition.
>>220899290Most of her additions to the first movie didn’t make it in in the first place. How much did they mess with the trench run in the end?
>>220898717>Storm Troopers sound like Jango Fettthat's not a thing, is it? Stormtroopers aren't clones and were never intended to be clones as far as I'm aware
>>220899321The whole stated objective he had for doing the THX remaster was that the original master for ANH was falling apart and he wanted to "preserve" the film. He did a little bit of cleanup on the special effects (thinning the optical effect for the light sabers and blasters so they weren't so chunky and burnt-in looking). But after the special edition he said something about how the remaster was destroyed because he used them to make the special editions. Which isn't how that works at all.
>>220899312more and more i appreciate editors for how hard their job is. there's rarely a deleted scene i've seen and thought "why did they cut this?" it's why i don't like extended editions of the lord of the rings. everything cut was cut for good reason.
>>220899393having both is fine as long as theres a director involved to get a unified vision

>>220899220You have convinced me. I want to have a lightsaber duel with Jett Lucas. Sure he had the moves in 2003, but has he kept up his training? We can use a pair of steel bars, cut to the right lengths. Show me your moves Jett. Are you ready for my (baseball bat) style?
>>220899275Quite literally you would need freedom of speech to defend yourself for such a hateful utterance. The original is 100% coherent. Han gut shots Greedo under the table to avoid being killed himself.
>>220899393>everything cut was cut for good reason.Almost. If you just watch the theatrical edition the major antagonist of the second movie just kind of vanishes. I'll give the lotr movies a pass though just because its such a comfy movie and world that I don't mind any excuse to linger in it. To be fair its been so long since I've watched the theatrical edits I don't remember all the stuff that is omitted.
>>220899459Jett got blasted so fast, he didn't stand a chance against CGI clone troopers

>>220898717I would say Jabba talking iwth Solo is a dumb change at best, he is a fat slug that can't even be bothered to move on his own just to watch hit pet rancor eat somebody, I doubt he is the type of crime boss to personally visit some random smuggler and even let him haggle, especially when Han stepped on his tail
>>220899485The LoTR changes are a more complex issue, because you have hauntingly brilliant editions like the passing of the elves, with the single best piece of soundtrack written for the entire trilogy, and Sam commenting that he doesn’t know why, but it makes him sad. Then you have absolute shite, like Gimli’s axe being stuck in an Uruk’s nervous system. Mostly it’s stuff like Gandalf and the Witch King having their confrontation, which uses lines from the book and seems good until it goes off the rails with the witch king breaking Gandalf’s staff. The mouth of Sauron scene is this too. It’s almost pitch perfect, until Aragorn does his little warcrime. The best example of this going well is Saruman’s new death scene. Wrong time and place, but done well, and closes off any new ends. There’s a perfect edit in there somewhere, but it’s way more complex than Star Wars. The best Star Wars OT viewing experience is literally just watching the theatrical versions, and it’s not even close.Overall, the extended editions get away with their retardery amongst fans because it’s just more of what Jackson already did. Don’t pretend the theatricals were devoid of stupid comic relief nonsense. With the Star Wars special editions George just made mistake after fucking mistake while editing them.

I had the DVDs with the little slipcover that held all 3 cases. prob around 2004-05ish? I ended up watching the OG trilogy more than the prequels cause of those DVDs. thought endor and hoth were so much cooler than geonosis, naboo, and mustafar.
i have the vhs golden cover whatever of the original special edition. I thought it was pretty good at the time, you could easily tell what was added because it was obvious cgi i don't feel it really detracted but added to the films. That being said i later found out Lucas has this irritating habit of constantly creating new versions and making it harder and harder to watch the previous version or originals. For example its almost impossible to watch the very og star wars as it was shown in the cinema. Also he has this attitude to everything Star Wars to this day and hes responsible for greenlighting and vetoing any decision by Disney.
>>220898717It's been 20+ years since Revenge of the Sith(which is about the same time from RotS to RotJ) and Hayden still looks about the same as he did back then. So I can believe Anakin's force ghost looking as young as he did.

>>220899644The idea was that Jabba in ANH was still a functioning mob boss. By ROTJ he's in full blown addiction and hedonism mode. Jabba's Palace is a sci-fi opium den. The cargo Han Solo used to run for him was sci-fi opium. Jabba started using his own products.
>>220904190True. The two shots that stand out most to me are the shot of Vader with an un rotoscoped, reflective white blade, and one shot of Obi wan’s blade where the rotoscoping was incomplete so you briefly see the prop. >>220898303george did end up adding this nice ass shot but something about this characters character desing doesn't make her look like some background character but instead like some one important who will show up again later in the story which would probably confuse some viewers.
wait so in return of the jedi they made jabba a slug and people didn't question it? weren't people like "jabba was a scottish dude in the first movie"
>>220908612It does, you're just brown and therefore don't undsrstand sarcasm/mockery in the english language
>>220908976for the nth time, the original "jabba" was a stand-in for a harryhausen stop motion effect, but it wasn't possible to create such a scene. so they reworked the dialogue into the greedo scene.
>>220909023you are 100% engaged in post-hoc rationalization to justify a bad scene.
>>220909027ok so the original star wars didn't have jabba. so was han just mentioning this jabba dude and we never saw him?
>>220908929Every single background and throwaway character in the original films is going to have their own feature film by disney as they mechanically churn through every conceivable piece of star wars content in search of something that sells.
>>220909056you could always watch the movie.
>>220909046you are 100% brown and have never spoken sarcastically in the english language
>>220909171sarcasm is a 90s thing anon.
>>220898717Victory Celebration is kind of fucking stupid because we have all these planets across the galaxy celebrating the Emperor's death but they only blew up the Death Star like twenty minutes ago, how did anyone find out?Did Leia post it on fucking Spacebook?
>>220898303I unironically think the galaxywide celebration at the end of Return Of The Jedi that I think appears in multiple special editions is a genuinely good addition.

>>220909232they saw it happen because that's how space works or something.t. jj abrams
>>220909232The implication, even in the original cut, is that it's many hours later seeing as Luke somehow prepped a burial for his dad all by himself. In that time imperial remnants retreating from the battle would have surely announced the death of Vader and the emperor and that shit would be instant news across the empire.
>>220909271Why the fuck did they put Palpatine's death scream here?
>>220909463Yeah, alright, that's fair enough.>>220909438kek
maclunkey's the key to all this
>>220909208>HE DIDN'T SAY NO CAP HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO TELL HE WAS BEING SARCASTIC AAAAH
they removed the scene where luke grows an elephant trunk
>>220909525the point is you grew up in an era defined by sarcasm. the 70s and 80s weren't. you're applying your ideas formed during childhood to an era in which they don't fit.
>>220898717I support George Lucas and his right to do whatever he wants with Star Wars (which is his own creation) and I actually support some of the changes he made to the original trilogy (like the galaxywide celebration at the end of Return Of The Jedi) but I will never agree with replacing Force Ghost Sebastian Shaw with Force Ghost Hayden Christensen even though I know that George Lucas wanted younger generations to see these films starting with The Phantom Menace and ending with Return Of The Jedi. And I say this as a fan of Hayden Christensen.>>220901706Based Hayden still looks young.>>220905851That's revisionist bullshit. Anakin was redeemed AS AN OLD MAN.
https://youtu.be/NTchb15FsnM
>>220909232>Did Leia post it on fucking Spacebook? It's possible to travel faster than the speed of light in the Star Wars galaxy, so news of the Empire's defeat got out fast.
the young anakin force ghost thing also makes zero sense because anakin was canonically never a true jedi. the only time he wasn't a cocky dick was when he was a child.
>>220900422The Jerk-U-Off 9000 was certainly a choice to add
https://youtu.be/O3u70WELSEg
>>220909655>That's revisionist bullshit. Anakin was redeemed AS AN OLD MAN.Yes, a scarred, maimed and damaged old man. That's never what appeared as a spirit at the end of the movie. The spirit has always depicted Anakin as he was as a Jedi. And with the prequels being finished, we do know how he looked like as a Jedi, so the scene was changed accordingly for consistency.
>>220910256anakin was never a proper jedi
>>220909463Why would imperials announce the death of the emperor and vader to the galaxy? I’ve always thought the rebellion announced that shit and the empire went into damage control “circle the wagons” mode
>>220899328actual retard
>>220898717most of those are the 2004 dvd stuff or 2011 stuff, special edition is just stuff from 1997.
>>220910515>that's not that special edition, that's the special'er edition
>>220910537Yeah, I said that, they are the same, like luke, luuke and luuuke or bigger luke.
>>220910563>they are the sameI'm glad you agree.
>>220908610>Aren't you a little short to be a storm trooperI doubt the recruitment standards were that extreme
>>220900486He described himself as a "Methodist Buddhist". A Methodist is a branch of Christianity. I think that means he accepts the value of spirituality as a general thing rather than necessarily corresponding to 1 religion.
>>220898303Cleanup of the speeder effects in the original was a net positive. There's one scene where it's seen from a distance in a canyon that was never really completed.
wait...cloud city was lame in the original versions? so everything i like about cloud city and the aesthetic of empire strikes back is from the george lucas edits and battlefront video game?
>>220908439That's just normal boomer behavior, it's not an excuse
>>220910256By that logic Obi-wan and Yoda should look as they did in their peaks.
>>220909232I don't think you have to take it literally that all those cut-away scenes are happening at the same time. Its just shots showing that the empire has been defeated and people are happy and free now.
>>220910256>luminous beings are we, not this crude matter>appears as a luminous being, untouched by changes to his crude matter
>>220908725He did the THX remaster almost a decade before the special editions were released.
>>220912448>WEESA FREE!
>>220908471Weird how none of the other soda companies that did the switch needed to create a massive marketing fail that hurt the brand.
>>220905851dumb reasoning since he died redeemed. also, if you're watching the movies in order of release it's even dumber since you might not even know who he is at first glance, whereas when it was the original actor you literally just saw him unmasked like two scenes ago and now you can see this is how he looks unburned.
>>220912491that didn't receive as much flak, or any really, because the original film was just george reading the script in all of the new CGI sequences.
>>220912522why would they? coke took the hit for all of them.
i like when he steps on jabbas tail its really funny
>>220908439All of his kids are adopted anyway.
>>220898303One thing I'll never understand is why they'd add in that stupid redundant scene with jabba the hutt in the docking bay and not the cut scene with luke and biggs where they can see the star destroyer's attack on the blockade runner up in the atmosphere
>>220898717You forgot to add more Oola ryona to the top of your list
>>220912928>why didn't they restore a scene that's happening at the same time as a previous scenecontinuity would be the "official" excuse. George lucas not wanting to give the biggs actor any money is the actual reason.
>>220913501What I've learned from this thread is that we need a /tv/ cut of star wars
>>220912928Wouldn't that mean all 6 movies don't start in an outer space scene? When does that scene fit in?>>220913176>Oola Ryona>RyonaHOLY SHIT OOLA HAS A LAST NAME? I always figured Jabba never bothered assigning his slaves surnames
>>220913176>>220913924

>>220898717>Added Sarlacc Mouth and TentaclesI remember actually being sat in the movie watching this in 97 or whenever it dropped and thinking like dude wtf is this shit even after the cgi singing at Jabba's. I thought as a young kid the Sarlacc just being a pit was inherently creepy and saving lando and escaping etc. was one of my favorite bits in RotJ, fuck you george lucas.
What's the ultimate version of EP 4-6?I saw some thread couple years ago about "NewSkim 4K Film High Definition HDMI" or some shit fanmade version soon being released.Wanted to download it and watch it with my dad this summer.
>>220916330I think it use to be rips of this dvd release, dowloaded it off Demonoid over 16 years ago. Maybe theres a better quality version these days idk.
>>220916443I'm not sure it was just a rip. It was the original version though.
>>220916499Well I think that was the best quality dvd of 4-6 without cgi shittery that remains in existence.
>>220898303No, and anyone who says otherwise is a lying faggot
>>220898717>Jabba scene is okayRuins the pacing of the movie and effectively makes Jabba seem like a chump rather than a real threat. His introduction should be in RoTJ
>>220898303Return of the Jedi fixes every problem that "fans" claimed to have with the original movie, replacing the cheap looking sfx and yub nub with a much better song
>>220898717>Jabba talking with Solo on TatoonieThe fuck? It looks awful, that's an immediate dumb addition.
Are they going to fuck it up?Will we see the other theatricals released?
>>220898303Not so much the extra scenes, but the overall cleaning up of colors and lines. The old composite effects are less obvious. They physically cleaned the film when they pulled it out of the vaults. At the time the CGI was pretty innovative and flashy. Personally, I was just really happy to see Star Wars on the big screen, but I thought all the extra stuff was pretty cool, since I had already seen the earlier VHS releases about a million times.
>>2209163304k77, 4k80, 4k83
>>220899651>hauntingly brilliant editions >editionsnigga c'mon now. Also I can't remember if it's Two Towers or RotK that has some kinda awkwardly inserted people in Osgiliath and the top of the Black Gate that are clearly people just edited in with a CGI background with goofy shadows.
>>220916821I thought the story was that george literally fucked it up by going to the actual negatives and by way of slopping them with cgi in tthe 90's he physically ruined them. The old negatives are gone afaik. Prints on film do exist of course in close to pristine quality, and better versions of the unaltered trilogy might see the light of day, but i dont think its possible now to go to the actual negatives and unslop it.
>>220917022"remastering" always destroys the original negatives. that's why its called "remastering." the new master is the only master. he also destroyed some prints when the negatives were too degraded to be used.
>>220899704Well most Auteurs still recognize that film is a collaborative process and don't believe in destroying the work of others.
>>220898615the x wings in space just before the battle of yavin gives a better sense of scale and also a better spacing imhothe falcon's take off scene from mos eisley also gets a pass I guessthe rest is shit
