The Phantom Menace is aimed very specifically at 5-year-olds and is so aggressively infantile it alienates adults and many older children too. I think he was trying to make movies for everyone. I think it's just very accessible to children and does not really require any sort of intelligence or life experience to be entertained by it. If you're looking for a story for grown-ups, Star Wars ain't it.But George Lucas didn't do that on purpose. He's just did with it what he could, and it wasn't anything more than what we got. That's his limit. When you hear him talk about the movies that inspired him, they were almost all stuff he watched as a kid.
