I thought the episode overall was pretty whatever (still good by most show's standards), but this punchline was fucking great. Love Patricia.
And the Tom and Evan moments were done well. The angsty teen trope actually feels justified for once.

This made me laugh really hard. Genuinely haven't laughed like that in years.

>>220919578
Yeah, there was an opportunity to make a joke there or have them see the boogeyman, like they just disappeared from the scene when she left the house(because the house is a set, and the exterior of the house is on location and it would be expensive to have all those actresses come out for a small joke). Still they could have done joke where they're all looking after tazed lady and they never see the boogeyman. Or just have them looking out window from the inside and go HOLY SHIT HE'S REAL.

So am I misremembering or did the show not elaborate what the fuck was going on with the Shep guy in episode 1?

Specifically, why did his medical chart say he was 37 years old when he was an old man? I can’t imagine why. If it’s time travel then you’d think they wouldn’t think he’s 37. If he’s unnaturally old why didn’t they doctor mention it?

I hope Tom just explains to Evan what's going on with the island when he inevitably gets angry about them canceling the Boston trip
>>
>>220922440
If he does I doubt his son will believe in magical curses

Also why exactly did the mom get sick? I was thinking about it, is it because she was pregnant with a cursed island baby while trying to leave?

If that’s the case then the sheriffs wife can’t leave either now?
>>
>>220922440
Evan will try to get on a ferry after the storm
>>
>>220922468
I don't mind even if Evan doesn't believe it. I just hate when a character just won't explain what's going on.
>Also why exactly did the mom get sick? I was thinking about it, is it because she was pregnant with a cursed island baby while trying to leave?
I think the mom is native to the island
>If that’s the case then the sheriffs wife can’t leave either now?
They can. They just can't let their baby to be born on the island if they don't want it to be cursed.
>>220922497
Yeah, this might happen.
>>
>>220922540
I swear he met the mom on the mainland and he just moved back to the island. I thought he was the “native” even though he wasn’t born there
>>
>>220922623
Tom's dad is from the island, but his mom is from the mainland. They were divorced, his mom left his dad, and gave birth to him on the mainland. Tom regularly visited his father after he got sick, and that's how he met his wife. I think that's how it is
>>
>random slasher episode
This show is so fucking weird and kino
>>
>>220922750
Also confused on whether from Tom’s POV he has always known deep down that supernatural shit was real and the town was cursed in some way, but he knows they need tourism money to help change things. Or if he only believes it not he’s seen so much recently because the evil woke up or whatever

>>220920941
I've been grabbing the RAWR versions on public trackers for all the episodes now but for some reason episode 6 doesn't have a RAWR tagged release in either 1080p or 4k.

>>220920989
>>220920995
Asylum would be cool. Next episode is Storm of the Century though so don't know if shelter would be in the old hospital or if that's the episode after. I'm going to guess that that torture basement we've seen twice now is actually part of the asylum. I think next episode will wrap most things up. They might reserve the last episode for a 'happy ending'.

>>220921083
>>220920965
I don't think it's all meant to be King inspired, episode 3 reminds me of The Wickerman/Midsommar.

>>220922326
It's still a plot element. Patricia mentioned she didn't know Chelle was pregnant because she thought she should be in her 40s.

>>220922468
Sheriff and his wife were presumably not born on the island, so they can leave safely. But if their child is born on the island their child will never be able to leave due to the curse.
>>
>>220922862
It was Michael Myers not Jason chud
>>
>>220922780
His dad used to tell him stories about the island during his summer visits. After what happened to his wife, he probably started to think that the stories might be real, but he was still in denial and refused to believe it until now
>>
>>220922917
That didn’t answer why his wife had a stroke while pregnant and leaving
>>
Annoyed they didn’t remove the killers mask during the autopsy.
>>
>>220922988
Oh yeah, he never tried to take Evan off the island, even before the series started. So, even if he refused to believe it, he was at least too scared to even test if the curse was real or not
>>
>>220922999
Why doesn't it? People who were born on the island like his wife can't leave it, and if they do then they die shortly after.
In episode 1 when Tom and the journalist are having dinner in the diner the journalist mentions two separate cases where it happened.
>>
>>220922768
The island manifests your fears. We’ll probably also see a werewolf, vampire, and sea monster.

>>
>>220923209
I'll clear it up.

[X] TOM'S DAD (born on island) --- TOM'S MOM (not born on island) = TOM (not born on island)
TOM (not born on island) --- [X] LAUREN (born on island) = [X] EVAN (born on island)

Only the ones marked X are in danger of misfortune and imminent death when they leave the island.
>>
>>220923275
Only one character had a stroke while pregnant and leaving. Why are you taking that post and assuming it’s not referring to the character who had a stroke while pregnant? Bizarre behaviour from you
>>
>>220923321

>>
>>220923324
First post:
>Sheriff and his wife were presumably not born on the island, so they can leave safely. But if their child is born on the island their child will never be able to leave due to the curse.

Second post:
>That didn’t answer why his wife had a stroke while pregnant and leaving

Third post:
>Why doesn't it? People who were born on the island like his wife can't leave it, and if they do then they die shortly after.

Fourth post:
>Post you replied to is replying to a post that says his wife wasn’t born on the island same as him

>>
>>220923209
>>220923321
To add, that's what the buoys are for. If locals cross that point then they run into trouble or die. That's why Tom kicked Wyck off the boat prior to crossing it when he was dispatching of Richard Warren, and that's why Richard Warren turned to dust as soon as he crossed it.
>>
>>220923340
Like multiple, every episode they mentioned his wife/Evan's mom. Very first episode too I think.

It's the retarded schizo pretending not to understand basic plot elements all over again >>220923354
There is literally nothing wrong with post 1 and 3, which I made. Also I'm not the guy you're replying to.
The guy who is wrong doesn't understand why Tom's wife would have a stroke or why the Sheriff and his wife are safe if they leave before the baby is born. Both are clearly explained by the logic of the show.

I spent my teenage years listening to a small town PD's analog band and the vast majority of every night's calls were an old woman needing help off the toilet/social interaction + subduing or driving home a drunk guy (often referred to by name since it was always the same several people). There has to be something Tom has known all this time that he hasn't shared with the audience. He's an unreliable narrator.

He knows something about the basement. We're not told what happened to the previous mayor, how long he (Tom) has held his position, or why things are suddenly happening again (we are led to believe that the supernatural events had ceased for a spell, though still within the lifetime of Patricia in 2000).
>>
>>220926425
FROM is so bad its fans have Stockholm Syndrome and need to shit on this show.
>>
>>220926771
Tom isn’t the narrator. He hasn’t even been the main character the last 4 episodes. Obviously whatever he knows is demonstrable in the basement
>>
>>220926771
They explain the island is waking up to “feed” one way or another. It’s very Pennywise-ish, but why isn’t really important, just that there are long periods of dormancy and then a period of bad things

I know he's not literally a narrator, but among the other main cast he was clearly written and set up to be the audience's self-insert with his incredulity. But clearly there's a lot about him that was hidden from the audience. At this point there could still be some massive revelation about his character that will upend everything we thought we knew about his relation to the island.

I'm watching a podcast from people discussing the show right now and they brought up a neat theory, that the woman Sarah Westcott/Warren knocked into the ocean with the oar became the Sea Hag.

Also it seems the people saying Frances Warren (the little girl) survived are right and she didn't drown with the other children even though the swept away at sea painting at the inn suggested otherwise, apparently there's a painting in epsiode 5 of a woman wearing the brooch and missing a finger, I don't have a screenshot but will go back and check.

I rewatched episode 1 and it helped me put a lot of the locations into context.
Like Harbormaster's office is right next to the headless statue, which is also right next to where the ferry drops off the tourists, which Tom can see from his office meaning the town hall is also there.

Also the painting of Frances in question turns out to be the one we've seen several times, directly facing Tom's office. The one that I assumed was of Sarah and Richard Warren.

But then who was the old man in the painting? Because Frances was a child when rescued at sea and Richard Warren was still very young looking then. The painting shows Frances as a young lady and the man is old, which would make sense as Richard Warren except we know he was entombed all this time.

I was thinking that the SS Mary incident was related since an old mayor sank the SS Mary so he could steal the captain's young bride and their ages were described as 53 and 16 which sort of matches the age gap of the old man and Frances in the painting, except the SS Mary sank in 1811 and Frances was already like 10 years old (google says actress is 14) in 1702, which would have made her an elderly woman by the time of the SS Mary incident. So it can't be related to the SS Mary. But we also know people age weird on the island, like how Shep's age was 37 even though he looked old, and Patti said her biological age is 28 when she's purportedly in her 40s.

Also I noticed the parallel in Tom's ding dong ditch story with Wyck and Evan's dare at the boogeyman's house. Everything rhymes, this show is so dense.

OUR HISTORY

ISLAND FOUNDER
RICHARD WARREN

In 1681, Richard Warren was a merchant Pilgrim, a Puritan seeking a new community. There was a wicked storm at sea and the ship sank, leaving Richard to swim to the nearest shore, which became Widow's Bay Island. He was determined to make this undiscovered land his own, and he formed a settlement where Widow's Bay Township now stands proud and lasting.

With [his] first wife who died under mysterious circumstances (some say by Richard Warren's hand), Warren had seven seven [sic] children. In 1701, he married a 25 year old woman who traveled from Boston for the engagement, named Sarah. When a madness plague affected the island in 1702, Sarah attempted to leave the island with the children, but they sickened at sea and died.

Thanks to trade ships in the 1700s, after the plague, the township was rebuilt and thriving by the mid 1750s. There were setbacks, with rumors of strange and deadly fog, aggressive sea creatures [, and] other anomalies that threatened the well-being of the citizens of Widow's Bay. When you visit the Historical Society, you can see firsthand accounts and period articles and photos of some of the phenomena that envelopes the lore of the island. And, when you stay at Breakwater Inn, be sure to be on the lookout for ghosts and other hauntings!

Although no know[n] living relatives remain on the island, the Richard Warren Museum preserves the legacy of our island's founding father and family. Usually open by appointment, the museum does have holiday hours, so be sure to check in and see items from the Warren homestead, some as early as the late 1600s belonging to Richard's children and wife.

THE NEW YORK TIMES BUSINESS MONDAY REVIEW

TRAVEL

New England's Best Kept Secret
By ARTHUR LLOYD

Don't look for a Starbucks here. We have harkened back to a different time. A lack of modern amenities can feel unnerving at first. But after taking in the sparkling views and salty breezes, feeling so far from the mainland was a feeling most welcomed.

For this traveler, a weekend was certainly not long enough to enjoy and unwind on this time-capsule, historic island location. Although the ferry ride is long - 3 plus hours - and the journey might be a bit choppy with waves and storms and come [sic] from nowhere on the ride from Boston to the main dock of Widow's Bay Township, there was plenty of blue sky, sea life (dolphins!) and seagulls to make the journey interesting. This is also an ideal journey to work on your summer reading list, which invariably gets shorter every year. The ferry arrived on a Friday mid-morning without fanfare. A low-level hum blankets the island - some of the locals say if you listen, you can hear the island whispering to you. A lack of modern amenities can feel unnerving at first. But after taking in the sparkling views and salty breezes, feeling o far from the mainland was a feeling most welcome. I didn't miss having cell phone service at all.

Widow's Bay is the next Martha's Vineyard. Fill up on french toast and fresh maple syrup at the Driftwood Diner as locals proudly tell you rich stories about the island's founding father. My stay was nearly idyllic with the only sour note being my interactions with the Mayor, who is working too hard to sell up an already Edenic island.

Colorful History and Folklore

Although there are not many shops or restaurants, the few in town are plenty, and the locals have stories aplenty too. There is a Historical Society Museum with lots of strange and often unbelievable "history" to consider, as well as the Richard Warren House Museum, the home of the founder of Widow's Bay, who is still revered today.

From floods, to plagues, and other supernatural calamities, Widow's Bay has seen it all, and most of it borders on the unsettling. You can hear more about it when you visit the Historical Society - be sure to ask for Gerrie. She is a bastion of local knowledge, and is quite an interesting person herself. However at no time during my stay did I encounter a haunting.

>sherriff and gas station attendant just watch her pour $20 gasoline on the ground
>they see her trying to light it
>they see her light it and they see a guy with a knife who is on fire
>and only then do they go out and the gas station attendant puts out the fire on the boogey man
>the boogey man grabs him and the sherriff is in there caressing the shotgun
>the sherriff goes outside and screams drop him
>boogey man throws the attendant away
>the sherriff just stares at the boogey man while holding a shotgun pointed at him
>gets stabbed

That is not how cremating a body works; bones are very strong like some metals. The incinerator burns and turns to ashes the skin, muscle, and organs. The incinerator weakens the bones. Then the charred bones are thrown in a blender and grounded.
I cannot trust your opinions on movies and tv and definitely not on science and history. Also the last movie I saw was Team America.

So why did he stay down when she shot him?
>>
>>220936009
Because she's the descendent of Richard Warren
>>
>>220936009
Not him but I think the killer always gets up and escapes when people conveniently take their eye off the killer in these slasher movies. Halloween and Scream are both guilty of this, others too.

If you never take your eye off them and hold a shotgun to their head all the way to the incinerator you basically ensure they are destroyed because they're not given a chance to suddenly vanish and reappear.
It's basically taking the piss out of supernatural slashers with logic.

>300 year old town founder says curse will end when his bloodline is gone, and since he believes all his kids died once he dies that’s his bloodline is gone

This show's pretty generous with its lore. It's the opposite of Mystery Box shows. We already know the basic history of the Island, what the founder did etc. I like that it handwaves every paranormal thing using the "Curse" excuse, because it means they can lampoon every horror thing under the sun.

Right now the only thing they need to figure out is how to break the curse without killing the mayor's son. I wonder if there's enough material for S2...

>>220938234
Yea I knew about that, my contention in a previous thread was that the Warren bloodline survivor couldn't have been Frances since the painting at Breakwater Inn depicted a what seemed to be a boy being rescued whereas the girl was clinging on to Sarah and presumably drowned with her.

But this >>220930470 painting confirms that Frances survived given the missing digit.
>>
>>220939976
I'm guessing the (obvious) revelation that Evan is a descendant will be in the finale, and set up that the premise of S2 will be trying to find some other way to break the curse.

They'll probably commission Katie Dippold with another show idea, but it would make absolutely no sense for a season 2.

Yeah I know it was previously a trend in the industry to commission additional seasons for shows that were one and done with fully-realized plots like True Detective, The Terror, Good Omens, (maybe GoT and Wednesday too) etc in order to milk the franchise name and the audience, but all those attempts ended in failure.

At best they'll probably commission another horror comedy with a different cast in another setting, but it will otherwise have to have completely different characterisations and references.

Yea I know I sort of wish the show was way longer too given how rich the setting is.

We'll have to see how it ends though. Maybe it'll end with Tom et al breaking the curse for the current townsfolk and leaving the island, but then the last scene shows some lingering supernatural happening that suggests it's not banished completely and will return, cue season 2 set years later in Widow's Bay, but I think we can all agree right off the bat that this would be a cheap ending and a bad idea.

On a related note Until Dawn 2 was announced recently with a new trailer... and even though it's a new setting and direction it looks like straight garbage...
