How can >A FUCKING ROCK die from radiation...?
>>
>>220921089
he's not a rock.. he's a boulder...
they didn't tryhard the science to be realistic, there's a whole significance of having a 'discredited' scientist whose theory was maybe oxygen+hydrogen aren't necessary for life and then meeting a lifeform that's made of xenon in a solid state.
when it comes to lifeforms, radiation fucks shit up on a dna/rna level. they may have been a 'rock' species but they're still lifeforms.

From a fanfic

French president Perry Lambert who called the proposal, “a waste of Earth’s resources,” in an interview with Agence France-Presse. He added, “Earth lost more than two billion people in the last 20 years, we need to focus on recovery, not interstellar space projects.”

...
...

There was no point in mincing words. He was bound to find out eventually.

“One and a half billion,” she said, meeting his eyes. He sucked in a breath. “Your country fared well, but other, poorer countries were not so lucky.”

“Then…there was war?”

“Yes,” she said. “In the mid-2030s, lasting eight years. The countries in the Saharan desert were determined to keep their hands on Astrophage, and other powers didn’t like that.” He went silent, considering the implications there. “But then there were starvation crises, and the mass displacement in the tropics...”

>Grace... Eridian scientists are ready to launch the Xenonite Rods at India, at near light speed.
>... Can I think about it?
>Don't take too long, Grace. The longer you wait, the more damage they'll do... I know, I've seen it in that laptop you gave me.
>>
>>220921508
Rocky and crew were the first spacefarers of their species. They didn't even know about relativity, they thought they could accelerate beyond the speed of light. That's why they packed so much fuel and why Rocky had extra to give to Grace.

They had really advanced material engineering (they have a space elevator), but otherwise Earth science is superior.
>>
>>220921508
They only just got to space when their sun started dying. And they don't have eyes, so light/radiation is harder to grasp.
>>
>>220920193
they essentially didn't die because he didn't go back to earth to know that they died

Yeah Erid is much hotter than Earth so they had a bit more time

>"How long will your xenonite construction take?”
>“Four days. Could be five days. Why you ask, question?”
>“I want to work fast.”
>“Why so fast, question? Slower is safer. Less mistakes.”
>I shift in my chair. “Earth is in a bad state. It’s getting worse all the time. I have to hurry.”
>“Not understand,” says Rocky. “Why Earth so bad so fast, question? Erid go bad slower. Have at least seventy-two years before big problems.”
>Seventy-two years? Man, I wish Earth had that kind of time. But seventy-two years from now Earth will be a frozen wasteland and 99 percent of the human population will be dead.
>Why isn’t Erid as badly affected? I furrow my brow. I only have to think for a moment before I have my answer: It’s all about thermal energy storage.
>“Erid is much hotter than Earth,” I say. “And Erid is much larger with a much thicker atmosphere. So Erid has a whole lot more heat stored in its air. Earth is getting cold fast. Very fast. In fourteen more years, most humans will be dead.”
>His voice becomes monotone. It’s a very serious intonation. “Understand. Stress. Concern.”
>“Yes.”
>He clicks two claws together. “Then we work. We work now! Learn how to kill Astrophage. You return to Earth. You explain. Save Earth!”

Honestly the book is extremely reddit but it still has a solid plot and premise. The Martian is the same. The movies are better by virtue of not having to listen to the main character's inner thoughts.

Are you implying 3 billion less humans is somehow a bad thing?
>>
>>220921527
well how would they know the sun is having issues and how would they navigate there and if they somehow just guessed, what was there plan to analyze and fix the sun upon arriving
>>
>>220923655
sure felt like it
>>
>>220926991
>how would they know the sun is having issues and how would they navigate there
They know that the sun heats their planet and they followed the Petrova line to get there, just like the humans did. The scientists who ended up dying would have done the same thing that Grace ended up doing, since that has nothing to do with observing radiation. Or at least that's what they would have attempted.

It doesn't matter if they were going to fail, because Grace's mission was also about to fail since he lost his engineers. There were TWO hail mary missions going on and they both only succeeded because they found each other. It's really not that hard to understand.

They know what the Petrova line is, Rocky literally has it engraved on him. They may not be able to see light, but they can measure heat (which is what infrared/Petrovascope shows anyway).

What they didn't know is space is full of cosmic radiation. Their space program is not advanced as Earth's. Their echolocation is useless in vacuum so they don't have a lot of incentive to explore beyond their planet.

>>220928568

Something that doesn't make a ton of sense (or I missed) with their level of exploring or understanding space- how did Rocky figure out that oxygen and about 70 degrees is what's suitable for Grace? Maybe it was because Grace sent back the star chart model with Earth's location marked- but did Rocky really have the ability to then take a look at Earth and deduce those properties from it?
>>
>>220920924
based
>>
>>220930714
When Grace first opened the canister it was full of hot ammonia, when he sent it back it would have been filled with cool oxygen. Rocky probably detected that when he opened it and asumed that was Grace's atmospheric conditions.
>>
>>220930822
Ah yeah that would do it. Grace didn't comment on the heat in Rocky's atmosphere until later after the container thing, but maybe he took so long to figure out how to open it that the contents cooled down first

Rocky is not made of xenon. Eridians having developed xenonite shows how advanced their materials science is, and how their tech is ahead of humans' in some ways and behind ours in other ways

The movie really needed to explain why Rocky wanted to go with Grace on the Haily Mary instead of his own ship, it would have cleared up a lot of confusion as to why people wrongly think that the Eridians are much more advanced than us when they really aren't.
>>
>>220931616
I agree with this take. It would have helped a lot as although the ship is cool, it would have made it clear that they had done the equivalent of what people in the 1800s thought you could do launching yourself into space with a huge gun.
Them not knowing about cosmic radiation affecting them also makes sense to me, it's not like they had monkeys and dogs to launch before them.
Relativity too isn't exactly something that you just know, not a single anon on this site would come anywhere close to figuring that out unless someone told them. Time dilatation they would have figured out experimentally eventually, but the one clock that we saw them have wasn't anywhere near accurate enough to notice a change at any speeds they would have been traveling at.
>>
>>220931931
>launching yourself into space with a huge gun
Is our rocketry really so different from that idea? It's still launching yourself with an explosion that's forced through a tube- but a sustained explosion rather than one big burst
>>
>>220921508
I sort of agree however humanity discovered different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum at different times before realizing they're all the same thing. They probably were aware of things like radio and infrared waves, but neglected to think about the highest waves.
>>
>>220932005
Nope, we are basically doing the same thing, only the tech inside the bullet is more advanced as we have to take 100% of everything with us. These beings can generate whatever they need like a 3d printer
