This guy was never relevant to how whites perceived blacks or to how blacks perceived themselves.
The joke was that Steve was smart but also an annoying, needy loser. If anything, he reinforced ideals of Black masculinity, and the Stefan transformation just nailed that home. Also, Myra > Laura.
