It's funny how people project 1984 to be about Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia when he's pretty clear in his essays about hating the UK and what it's becoming. His fights with government censorship was the UK government (and a particular Soviet spy in it), the commie publisher Gollancz tried to ice Animal Farm. They censored his letters during (and after) the war. The guy was so principled about free speech he wrote in favour of Moseley being allowed to have an opinion post-war.

This has been true since season 2. He's obviously got a lot of people whispering in his ear about leveraging his celebrity so he's trying to be a star, forgetting that the reason people liked him in the first place was because he was genuine and down-to-earth.
