I always felt the TV shows never did the original Stargate movie justice. That it never got it. It just took the gate itself, and turned it into the Star Trek location of the week plot device. In the movie, there was a sense of awe and wonder about discovering the Stargate itself. There was a sense of reverence to it. Stepping through the portal to visit another world carried wonder and exploration to it. Ra and his army were shown to mop the floor with trained marines, with technology far surpassing humanity. That it was only through combined efforts of taking them by surprise through sheer numbers, and Ra underestimating them did they win. The show however treats the Goa'uld like a fucking joke. They die faster than red shirts in Star Trek, soaking up machine gun bullets with worlds and entire capitol ships being stolen from them. Where once they hid their appearance behind metallic masks showing themselves as false gods, they no longer wear helmets and speak perfect english. No actual threat to SG1, and treated like a weekend mission to bang out and go fishing after. Everyone is either doing Joss Whedon quips, or spewing out techno jargon bullshit. No sense of real fear, or danger present. The show watered down everything great from the movie, and made it into a live action cartoon.
bump
Stargate had better wonder of going through the gate.Stargate SG-1 had far better characterization.
>>220934434calm down Roland, I know you didn't get your two sequels that were promised to you but maybe it's time to go to bed
>>220934434You have a point
>>220934434Agreed. Stargate SG-1 is hard carried by the fact that it's just a fun show to watch. They totally ignored Daniel and O'Neil's arcs from the movie after the pilot episode. Daniel doesn't feel like a guy who lived on an alien planet with his wife for a year, he feels like another scientist. I think they only mentioned O'Neil's ex-wife and dead son like twice in the entire show. The main plot kinda just happens when the writers realize they can't ignore it anymore. The worst example of this is the end of Atlantis where they realize the crew still doesn't have enough ZPMs (even though the whole show was supposed to be about hunting down ZPMs) to make a jump back to earth so they come up with a totally bs way to make it happen. Stargate SG-1 was best when they didn't have easy space travel and the world still felt mysterious. Yet the later seasons are still very enjoyable because the concept is just that strong. I especially enjoy the planet of the week episodes.
>>220934434Yeah the movie really sold the idea of such a concept being grand and cosmic. The show makes it as mundane as possible.Oh yeah look another village with stock props and everyone dressed in rags where the chieftan is under the thumb of the bad guys so he's gonna stonewall us. Great.
SGU is the only one that more or less captured the "point" of the movie. The rest was just typical scifi shlock made to churn out stock episodes based on tired templates.
>>220935470>they come up with a totally bs way to make it happenwhat are you referring to?the mckay-carter intergalactic bridge or the flying city part? because both of those are cool as fuck.
>>220935528oh yeah i remember the part in the original movie where the fat you-insert nerd and the other fat nerd were cuckzoned by the women they were into while some cheesy singer-songwriter ballad was playing after every episode
>>220935584https://stargate.fandom.com/wiki/Wormhole_drivethe part where they unlock a new kind of hyperspace travel at the very last minute and it's never used again
>>220935640What an odd thing to say
>>220935662that doesn't prove me wrong
>>220935142Characterization my ass. Everyone were glassy eyed exposition dumpers, with Jack turning every scene into shitty improv hour.
>>220934434Yeah, I've been saying this for years. The movie was compelling sci-fi. The show was silly 90's Xena shit.
