season 1 is a good 8/10 show held back by the 00s insistence on inserting zero storyline moving sex into every episode because it's "premium cable," and there was a very strong expectation of it. (most people were still on dial up internet when rome was made. people wanted some titties). television got a lot smarter about that in the 2010s. it also has the problem of a lot of the show being dedicated to a sort of carnival walking tour of roman society, rather than going all in on the politics, and war, and motivations of the people involved in the various civil wars. too many times scenes would cut to seemingly random trivia sections of roman lore rather than continue the plot.the 2nd season fails so hard from essentially forcing 3 seasons of intended plot into 10 episodes, even shorter than the 1st season. It's at best a 6/10. Ultimately Rome failed as a show, but it was the " Rome walked so GOT could run," situation. The show best survives in memory through individual scenes, but the overall structure just couldn't work. (nevermind that in universe ~30 years pass and they still look like the same as their gaul wars days)

They built all those really expensive sets for the show but they all feel too small and cheap.

>>220941278It's called Rome, not Caesar and Antony. The setting is a character in and of itself, and the carnival walking tour of Roman society is the world-building that made it come to life. It's funny that you say Rome walked so GoT could run, when GoT's biggest problem was that the setting was background noise so there was no reason to give a shit about it, which then made the politics and war less meaningful because who cares about the politics and wars of a setting that doesn't matter?Take it even further, and it's exactly the reason why the ending flopped. In the books most of Dany's story focuses on the aftermath of her actions and decisions and how her good intentions often lead to bad outcomes, which slowly grinds her down into being more tyrannical. You need to see and understand the setting for that to sink in and for her final turn into a tyrant to feel justified. But since they didn't do that, everyone hated it.
