Did Robin Williams work well in serious movies like Good Will Hunting and Awakenings, or was he better strictly as a comedian?

Interestingly, he looked terrible in the jungle outfit although the performance wasn't awful. When he became a more serious character the film becomes excellent.

Jim Carrey also did some good serious movies, like The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine.

His serious stuff was better but only because he spent a lifetime before being a funny guy and that let him give more gravitas to his old man roles
