>>220937690Well the main point of turning the freaking kids gay and brown was to emphasize how much the main character had become alienated from mainstream society due to the time dilation (an allegory for Vietnam vets experiencing the same thing after living in essentially another world for several years and coming back to find that the US had changed culturally rather significantly).They could just swap the gay brown kids for some other weird thing that would emphasize the MC’s disconnect that isn’t controversial. Maybe all the kids only interact in direct neural interface VR or something weird and don’t socialize well… something that is essentially already in progress irl.
